LOGINChapter 6
Dolores picked up the glass again. She took a long sip, then another, too quickly. The drink eased her internal fear a little. The rain worsened. With every flash of lightning, she shrank a little more, breathing through her mouth so her chest wouldn’t hurt. She sighed with her eyes closed, sadness weighing on her. It felt endless. Zacky watched everything. He was worried. “You’re going to get dizzy,” he said quietly, eyeing the way she emptied the glass. “I’m… just trying to relax,” she murmured, without looking at him. Another bolt of lightning lit up the entire room, so bright the lantern seemed useless for a moment. The thunder ripped the air right after. Dolores held her breath and closed her eyes, gripping the arm of the chair even tighter. He reached out and touched her hand. It was a light touch. When she didn’t pull away, he let his fingers slide until they covered her whole hand. Warmth. Immediate warmth. It traveled up her arm, a sudden shock that made every hair on her body stand up. She opened her eyes slowly and looked at their joined hands. Zacky remained serious. It wasn’t arrogance or irritation. It was… concern. She tried to say something, but her voice didn’t come. Instead, she simply turned her palm upward and squeezed his fingers. Zacky looked down at the small gesture and swallowed hard. “You don’t have to be scared,” he murmured, his voice low and rough, almost a whisper. “I’m right here.” The rain kept falling, the wind pounding against the windows. And in the middle of the storm, their touch grew dangerously intimate. Another bolt tore across the sky, so close it illuminated the whole room for a second. Dolores dropped her glass, and it fell onto the rug. She brought both hands to her face, breathing in short, quick bursts — she was close to a panic attack. “Sorry…” she whispered between her fingers. “I… I hate storms. I can’t… I can’t control it.” Zacky drew in a slow breath, his chest tightening at the sight of her like that. Dolores was shaking. It wasn’t exaggeration, nor weakness. It was pure fear — so real it unsettled him. She tried to stand up, too fast, and stumbled. He moved quicker and caught her shoulders before she fell, her body landing perfectly against his. “Hey, hey… Easy. You’re inside. Nothing’s going to hurt you.” Dolores shook her head, her eyes filling with tears. “I know it’s stupid,” she said, her voice trembling. “But I can’t… When I was little, a tree fell on our house during a storm, and… I never forgot the sound.” Another thunderclap exploded outside. She flinched, digging her fingers into Zacky’s arms. He wrapped his arm around her shoulders and pulled her against his chest. “It’s not stupid,” he murmured into her hair. He cupped her face with one hand, his thumb brushing close to her trembling chin. “Look at me.” Dolores lifted her gaze slowly. Her eyes shone with fear… and shame for being so vulnerable. “Breathe with me,” he said, keeping her eyes locked on his. “Like this.” He inhaled slowly, deeply, exaggeratedly — for her to follow. She tried, leaning against his chest. Outside, the wind slammed a door. She squeezed her eyes shut. Zacky pulled her even closer. “It’s okay.” He rested his forehead against hers, their warm breaths mixing in the small space between them. “I’m here, Dolores. I’m not going anywhere.” She let the tears fall freely, clutching his shirt. And Zacky… Zacky surprised even himself when he held her tighter. Another thunderclap split the sky, making her shrink instinctively against his chest. Dolores lifted her face a few inches, searching for air, for control… and found his gaze. Zacky held her, but fear flickered in him — fear of losing the little self-control he still had. She was vulnerable. Defenseless. Beautiful. And it stirred something deep in him. He couldn’t deny it. His restraint as a man was hanging by a thread. He touched her chin again with his thumb, guiding her face upward. Her skin was soft, warm… and her big eyes — frightened by the storm — widened a little when they met his. He held his breath. This woman… This woman who had shown up to disrupt his peace… Was now fragile in his arms, looking at him as if he were her only anchor in the storm. And… he wanted her. More than he could ever admit. His thumb brushed the tender skin just beneath her lower lip. “Zacky…” she whispered, not knowing if she was asking him to stop… or to go on. She gripped his shirt so tightly her knuckles turned white. And in that moment, he lost his remaining control. Months — maybe years — of tension pulsed through him… her lips so close… her scent… the loneliness building in him… Zacky leaned in a few centimeters, then paused, breathing hard. He pressed his forehead to hers. “If you knew how much you’re driving me crazy right now…” he murmured, voice hoarse. Dolores shivered from head to toe. She clutched his shirt tighter. His forehead slid softly against hers, his warm breath brushing her mouth. He was too close. Too warm. Too intense. And she… didn’t pull away. She didn’t want to. The attraction she felt from the first moment she saw him was too strong to deny. She closed her eyes and lifted her face, more than willing to yield. She waited… until she felt his lips touch hers. And dear God, what a delicious mouth. A kiss that had barely begun was already giving her a pleasure she had never known. A soft moan escaped her lips. “Ah…” The sound vibrated against his mouth as her fingers traveled up his muscular chest, exploring every line of his firm skin, the rigid neck… until they tangled in his silky hair. Zacky parted his lips to welcome her sweet tongue. His entire body tensed instantly, and he felt himself grow hard in seconds. “This woman…”Chapter 59Meanwhile, Andréia watched closely the way Pedro cooked. As soon as breakfast was over, he had already started preparing lunch. His movements were fast and full of tricks she had never seen before, which left her completely amazed."I can…" she began, a little embarrassed, pressing her fingers together.Pedro looked up and smiled."Of course you can help me. I just hope Maurício doesn’t mind."Before she could answer, Maurício’s firm voice came from the doorway."I don’t mind. She can do whatever she wants."Andréia felt her face warm at his protective tone and returned it with a shy smile.Maurício left Dolores with Andréia and went out shortly after. As soon as she was alone, Dolores picked up the phone that was on the table and saw a message from André.André: "Boss, I’m practically having a heart attack on a Monday."Dolores raised an eyebrow, amused, and typed a reply.Dolores: "I’ll hire someone to take your place."The reply came quickly.André: "Oh, thanks. Just don
Chapter 58In the big house, the silence of the early morning wrapped around everything.Zacky slept deeply, exhausted. The day had been heavy—work piling up since the time he had to be away from the ranch, difficult decisions, responsibilities that only kept growing. His body finally demanded its price, and sleep overtook him as soon as his head touched the pillow.Dolores woke up in the middle of the night. It wasn’t a nightmare. It was the soft, persistent sound of drizzle tapping against the roof and the windows. She lay there for a few moments with her eyes open, listening. Beside her, Zacky breathed deeply, in a calm rhythm that reassured her.She slowly ran her hand over her belly, feeling the baby move gently, as if also awake, attentive to the world. A serene smile appeared on her lips. The light rain continued outside, washing the earth, carrying away worries they didn’t always know how to name. Dolores sighed softly, turned carefully, and snuggled closer to her husband, see
Chapter 57Dolores was in the bedroom, facing the open window. She ran her hand over her rounded belly, feeling the warmth of the life growing inside her. There was a sweet tightness in her chest. She couldn’t explain it, but she felt that something important had been done that day.She heard footsteps behind her. Zacky appeared silently and wrapped his arms around her from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder. His large hands caressed her belly."You did the right thing," he murmured gently. "That girl needed someone who truly saw her."Dolores leaned her head against his chest, closing her eyes."I felt that too," she replied softly. "Sometimes, helping is all we can do… and all someone needs."Zacky kissed her hair tenderly."Our son will grow up seeing this," he said. "That we don’t turn our backs when we can make a difference."She smiled, moved, keeping her hand over her belly, while outside the farm slept in peace.---Meanwhile, a few drops began to fall from the previousl
Chapter 56Andréia felt her chest tighten."Who are you? Where did you come from?" she asked, her voice low and wary."I’m Dolores," she replied calmly. "I came to see if you’re happy here… or if you need help getting out."Andréia let out a short, joyless laugh."Is this a joke?""No," Dolores sighed sincerely. "I’m very serious."Silence. Andréia placed her hand on her belly again, this time without trying to hide it."Who is the baby’s father?" Dolores asked gently."Mine alone," she answered immediately, lifting her chin. "The father didn’t want to know. He said this child wasn’t his problem."Dolores felt a tightness in her heart but kept her voice steady."And you… do you want to stay here?"Andréia looked away, fixing her gaze on the peeling wall."No. I never wanted to. But I had nowhere else to go. At least here I have food and a roof over my head." She swallowed hard. "But it’s not a life. Not for me… and not for him."Dolores stepped a little closer."Then listen to me care
Chapter 55Zacky went to the gourmet area, and Dolores frowned as soon as she saw him approaching."What is it?""It’s Maurício. I don’t know whether I should be worried or not.""Then tell me what happened."He hesitated for a moment, unsure whether he should go into that subject, but he had already started. He told her everything. Dolores remained silent, thoughtful, absorbing every detail."If she was scared, the way he noticed, he should have talked to her," she said at last. "Asked how she ended up there...""I don’t know, Dolores. That’s not a place for a young woman.""I know, Zacky. But sometimes life’s circumstances don’t leave any other choice.""In this life there are always choices.""I know that too," she replied gently. "But in desperation, those choices don’t always appear clearly."He gave her a quick kiss and left, saying he was going to harvest corn and wouldn’t be back until the afternoon. As soon as she was alone, Dolores raised an eyebrow, clearly determined to ge
Chapter 54They were both exhausted. He moved out of her, a final hoarse sigh escaping them both, and settled next to her. In an almost unconscious gesture, he pulled her close, his arm heavy over her waist in a drowsy possession."It was really good," he murmured, the words thick with fatigue and alcohol. He let out a yawn before closing his eyes.He fell asleep almost instantly. She could tell by the change in his breathing, which became deeper and more regular, and by the dead weight of his arm around her.She had liked it too. Liked it in a way that frightened her, that made a pang of regret bloom in her chest. Because the morning, relentless, would come. He would leave, pay, and disappear through the door, becoming a memory. And she would have to get up, recompose herself, and face the harsh reality: he had only been the first. The first of many anonymous faces, strange bodies, empty transactions that would fill her days from then on. And deep in her soul, a painful certainty was
