Chapter 2

Author: Triple Six
I asked, "Why do you want to marry me?"

Irene countered, "Don't you want to know what actually happened in your past life, Xander?"

I recalled the scenes from the past two days as joyous music for Calvin and Julia's engagement celebration echoed from downstairs, while everyone kept congratulating them.

I remained silent for a few seconds before replying, "I'll marry you, then."

Irene clearly hadn't expected me to agree so easily. She remained silent for a while before she hummed in assent.

I was prepared to end the call after seeing that she had nothing else to say.

"Hold on!" Irene spoke up, stopping me from hanging up.

"Is there something else?"

"You didn't hurt a single person in your past life."

Irene sounded totally calm, almost detached, but that one simple statement made my heart race.

In the past two days, everyone had believed that I was responsible for the fire that killed them. I didn't want to believe it myself, but when everyone kept insisting that it was true, I started to doubt myself. Yet, at this moment, Irene finally told me I hadn't hurt anyone in my past life.

That sheer feeling of being trusted brought tears to my eyes all over again.

"What actually happened in our past life?"

If I hadn't been the one who set the fire that killed them, then there had to be another explanation for their deaths. What really happened in our past life?

I figured Irene wouldn't answer me when she fell silent on the other end again, but then she finally spoke up, "You'll find out the whole truth once we get married."

"Alright…" I figured Irene probably had her reasons for keeping it to herself. I was willing to wait until we got married to find out the truth if she wasn't ready to tell me now.

Calvin and Julia's wedding was only a month after the draw, so the whole family was busy getting everything ready for the big day.

I knew how much they hated me and kept their guard up around me, so I kept to myself in the attic and hardly ever went outside.

Calvin probably couldn't stand seeing me living peacefully, so he took it upon himself to stir up trouble with me. He came to the attic while I was painting—one of the few hobbies I had, as I hoped to become a painter if given the opportunity.

He scowled the moment he walked in. He then spoke with obvious ridicule and spite in his voice, asking, "Do you really just spend your days in a place like this, Xander? You're living in a total dump!"

Though the attic was small—and cluttered with all kinds of things—and clearly inferior to the other rooms in the house, it wasn't nearly as bad as Calvin made it out to be.

I knew Calvin wasn't there to pay me a friendly visit, so I set my paintbrush down and waited for him to get to the point.

Calvin seemed annoyed when his taunt fell flat. He adopted a delicate, vulnerable tone, making it seem as though I had bullied him even though I hadn't done a thing.

"What's with the long face, Xander? Do you not want me around?"

"Not at all," I replied flatly.

Calvin grew annoyed when he couldn't get a reaction out of me. "I came here today because I want the villa in the western part of the city, Xander. It's got great vibes and a fantastic layout, perfect for newlyweds like Julia and me."

He stared fixedly at me, a look of sheer determination in his eyes.

Mom and Dad had given me that villa for my 18th birthday. They had carefully chosen the property because they planned for Julia and me to live there after we got married. Yet, now that Julia was no longer going to be my wife, the villa no longer felt like it belonged to me either.

Calvin let out a mocking laugh after seeing that I didn't respond immediately. "You don't seem very keen on giving me the villa, Xander. I'll just tell Mom and Dad that I don't need the villa, then."

I watched Calvin leave, fully aware that Mom and Dad would take his side if he brought them over. I couldn't help holding onto a sliver of hope, though. What if they stood up for me this time? They had loved and favored me for so many years, after all. What if they still cared about me somewhere deep down?

That lingering flicker of hope vanished the moment Mom walked into the attic, as one glance from her was all it took for me to know she was backing Calvin. She slapped me hard across the face the moment she walked in, not even bothering to say anything.

I could feel the stinging sensation spreading across my cheek, as if my skin were being peeled off alive, but that pain was nothing compared to the ache in my chest. Mom used to be the one who had loved me the most, after all.

"Go transfer the ownership of the villa to Calvin this instant, Xander!" Mom ordered coldly, making it clear she expected me to obey.

"I don't want to," I said firmly, looking directly at Mom.

Mom's expression instantly hardened. "What's wrong with us taking back the property your father and I gave you? You can get the hell out of this house if you refuse to hand it over to Calvin!"

That threat would have meant something if Mom still cared about me.

Upon hearing my confession, Irene was overjoyed. She pulled me closer with the intention to share a passionate kiss, but Dad deliberately cleared his throat and interrupted us.Calvin had already been taken into police custody, while Julia was also brought in for questioning over her suspected involvement as an accomplice.Mom and Dad looked at me, guilt written all over their faces. "We were fooled by Calvin's lies and blamed you for something you didn't do. You'll forgive us, won't you, Xander?"I couldn't tell if their guilt was genuine, but I was clear on my own feelings. "I'll accept your apology, but I'm not going to forgive you."Mom burst into tears while Dad's eyes turned bloodshot. "X-Xander…"I took Irene's hand and walked right past the two of them.Irene suddenly spoke up, "Xander…"I turned to her and asked, "What's the matter? Do you want to talk me into forgiving them?"Irene shook her head. "I wasn't going to do that. I just wanted to let you know that I'll sup

Irene finally told me the truth about our past life after we exchanged our wedding rings. She had witnessed Calvin setting the fire and had died trying to save me.I suspected that surviving the fire was the reason I hadn't been reborn with everyone else. It had allowed Calvin to take advantage of the situation and blame me for the fire."Your jealousy doesn't justify your cruelty, Calvin."Calvin became even more unhinged when faced with my composure. "That's easy for you to say since you're not the one everyone looked down on! I envy you and despise you! I despise the others too! I don't regret setting the fire and killing everyone! I only regret that I failed to kill you!""Your farce is over now—it's time to face judgment, Calvin," I said, seemingly out of nowhere.Calvin was thrown off, unease creeping in as he realized he was losing his grip on the situation. "W-What do you mean by that, Xander?"I flashed him a smile and said, "You should look behind you, Calvin."Calvin

I had assumed that even if Julia lacked Irene's talent, she wouldn't be completely hopeless. Julia had already secured a role within the company and was widely seen as the successor since Irene was disabled.Yet, even after being reborn, Julia's work performance hadn't improved. If anything, her competence had plummeted.Under her management, Quinton Group had started going downhill, and at this rate, it would go bankrupt within a year.Julia and Calvin, perhaps in a bid to salvage Quinton Group, hosted a banquet. Irene and I were among the guests invited.I knew Julia and Calvin couldn't be trusted, but I was ready to handle whatever they threw at us. Irene and I went to the banquet together.Upon arriving, I noticed that the banquet hall was illuminated by the soft light of crystal chandeliers, casting cold reflections off the silver and porcelain laid upon the tables. The champagne tower scattered faint golden reflections as orchestral music drifted through the hall alongside

Calvin was acting like all of this had happened because I had made a move on Julia.I sighed and shook my head helplessly. "I can't do anything about it if that's what you choose to believe."I then looked toward Julia and added, "That being said, I'm not interested in someone else's trash."It was obvious who that insult was aimed at.I paid no attention to their furious expressions and walked right by them.Irene was waiting for me in the living room when I returned home. She already seemed to know that Julia had sought me out several times. She looked somewhat nervous and remained silent for quite a while, as if she didn't know how to bring it up.I chose to speak up first. "You must know by now that Julia has approached me multiple times."Irene merely hummed in assent. She was naturally quiet and reserved, even though we had been around each other for quite some time."Have you got a handle on the succession situation?" I asked, knowing that Irene was never one to voluntee

I laced my fingers through Irene's, our rings touching as they fit perfectly together. "I'll always be here for you, no matter what comes our way."Irene and I moved into our new home together after Julia and Calvin's wedding, though we slept in separate bedrooms.I had gotten married, but my life stayed mostly the same—well, except for one thing. I had majored in finance during college and was supposed to work for Mom and Dad's company right after graduation, but plans changed, and I ended up going to work for Irene's company instead. It wasn't until I stood at the company entrance that I realized Irene, who had always kept a low profile, had been running something this big behind the scenes.I became Irene's secretary. I was good at what I did, and together, Irene and I managed to close several big deals together. That evening, everyone from the company got together for dinner to celebrate the occasion.I started feeling a bit lightheaded after being surrounded by the smell of

Upon hearing what Irene said, the crowd broke into an uproar."Irene wants to marry Xander?""What's going on here?""Isn't the real shocker the fact that Irene isn't disabled?"I held Irene's gaze as the noise around us seemed to disappear. I placed my hand in hers, and she tightened her grip, holding my hand firmly.People were still buzzing with continuous speculation over these two astonishing developments by the time everyone arrived for the wedding ceremony. Calvin and Julia, the couple who were supposed to be at the center of attention, were being completely ignored.Julia looked at Irene standing next to me, an unfamiliar feeling stirring inside her and leaving her uneasy. She slowly walked toward us and asked, "Aren't your legs disabled, Irene?"Julia caught herself and frowned right after saying that. She had always maintained a sweet, supportive sister persona in public, but today, she had completely lost her composure.Irene remained unbothered by Julia's choice of
