Chapter 2

Autor: Twinkling Stars
I looked at my grandmother, who was on the verge of death in the hospital room. My fists were clenched so tightly that my fingernails dug deep into my palms, drawing blood without me even feeling it.

For my grandmother, however, I set my dignity aside. In the hospital hallway, in the eyes of the public, I dropped to my knees to ‘propose’ to her again.

She smiled contentedly, reached out, lifted my chin, and said with contempt, “That’s more like it, Connor. You should’ve known to play along a long time ago.”

Deep down, I knew that she agreed to remarry me not because she still loved me.

Instead, it was revenge on me for not humbling myself to beg her to stay back then and for refusing to bow down to her, even when I walked away with nothing from our divorce. But none of that mattered to me.

All I knew was that once my grandmother’s condition improved, and once I had gathered enough evidence, I would return every bit of humiliation she had inflicted upon me, tenfold.

Just like today, after the rain stopped and we had just stepped out of the parking garage, we ran into Joshua. He was soaked, and his hair was a mess.

The moment he saw Zoe, he looked distressed. “Zoe, my car broke down. With the rain, I can’t go anywhere. Can you please give me a ride?”

Zoe looked at me, then looked at Joshua. Hesitation flickered across her face.

At that moment, I felt a slight stir in my heart, not because I cared, but because this was exactly what I wanted to see. Her hesitation and favoritism were the most powerful chips for revenge.

I said nothing. I simply raised my hand to hail a passing cab and opened the car door.

“You guys go ahead. I’ll catch a cab home.”

A trace of surprise flashed in Zoe’s eyes, but she quickly regained her usual composure as she led Joshua into our car.

“Alright then, be careful. I’ll be back a little later tonight.”

I nodded and got into the cab. As I watched their car gradually disappear into the distance, I felt nothing.

I had long since anticipated she would stay out all night tonight. After all, in her heart, I was never her first choice.

When we first got divorced, I thought I could let go of this relationship.

I deleted all of her contact information, threw away everything connected to her, and moved out of the apartment we once shared. I even moved to an unfamiliar city, desperate to start over, but in the end, I couldn’t do it.

We had been together since high school. We weathered grueling exam-prep days side by side; we got accepted into the same university; we built our careers together, going from having absolutely nothing to owning a company and a home of our own.

Back in high school, she always snuck me some breakfast. Even when caught, she would just smile and argue, “We’re just good friends.”

In university, she gave up the stable job her family got for her so she could accompany me in starting our business.

Every day she squeezed onto buses with me and ate plain bread. No matter how difficult or exhausting it got, she never complained.

On my birthday, she bought me a watch with money she had saved up for three months and fastened it onto my wrist, saying, “From now on, I’ll stay by your side so we earn a better living. Connor, I’ve never felt secure since I was a child, but since we’ve been together, you’ve made me feel so safe. All I want in this life is to be with you.”

Her words still rang clearly in my ears. Yet, she had done so many things that had pushed me over the edge, again and again.

Everything changed after Joshua appeared. Joshua was her childhood friend, and the two of them grew up together. Word had it that Joshua’s parents had once done a massive favor for her family.

She always told me that Joshua was just like a brother to her and that I shouldn’t let my imagination run wild.

“Connor, Joshua has no one to lean on. I can’t just ignore him. We’re just friends. Can’t you be more open-minded instead of always getting jealous?”

Friends? What kind of friend would wear her husband’s pajamas and snuggle up in her arms? What kind of friend would show up constantly and drive a wedge between a married couple?

In truth, from the moment Joshua first appeared, I had already caught wind of certain rumors. Some said Zoe chose to be with me back then because Joshua already had a girlfriend, and since her unrequited love went nowhere, she settled for second best.

Some said Joshua had always been in love with Zoe, but out of consideration for her feelings, he never confessed. Others said Zoe had never truly forgotten Joshua and that she was only with me to pave the way for Joshua.

I refused to believe those rumors. I preferred to believe her feelings for me were genuine, and that her relationship with Joshua was truly nothing more than pure friendship. Yet, I was so foolishly wrong.

After our divorce, I happened to catch a photo of Zoe and Joshua together in a group chat with classmates. In the picture, they were both smiling intimately on a beach we once visited together.

At that moment, I finally understood that I was the joke from the start, and for me, remarrying her wasn’t about rekindling an old flame. It was a long “withdrawal” process and, more than anything, a carefully orchestrated act of revenge.

Murmurs erupted from the audience once again, condemning and accusing them.“I can’t believe that’s the kind of person Ms. Nicholson is. She’s heartless!”“Embezzling company funds, transferring joint assets, and being so heartless? Who does she think she is?”“And Mr. Green isn’t any better! Using a woman to climb his way to the top? How sickening!”Reporters swarmed forward, shoving their microphones right into Zoe’s and Joshua’s faces.“Ms. Nicholson, are these pieces of evidence authentic?”“Mr. Green, have you and Ms. Nicholson been involved for a long time? Did you both intentionally deceive the public?”“Ms. Nicholson, do you have any explanation for embezzling corporate funds and transferring joint assets?”Surrounded by the crowd, Zoe and Joshua stood frozen, their faces pale. They opened their mouths to speak, but not a single word came out.Right at that moment, several police officers stepped into the venue.“Zoe Nicholson, Joshua Green. We received a report alleg

The host froze, and the smile on his face stiffened. He looked at me, confused. “Sir, who are you? Can I help you with something?”In an instant, every eye in the room focused on me. Some were puzzled, some curious, and others clearly annoyed. On the other hand, Zoe’s face turned deadly pale, and a flash of panic darted through her eyes. She stared at me intently, as if she couldn’t believe what she was seeing.Joshua narrowed his eyes, his voice cold. “Who are you? Security, get him out of here!”Several security guards immediately rushed forward, preparing to drag me away. However, I took a step back and held the flash drive high in the air.My voice was raspy yet firm as it echoed loudly across the entire venue. “It doesn’t matter who I am. What matters is that I hold the secret you both want to hide the most. Zoe, Joshua, it’s time to show your true colors!”The crowd instantly erupted into chaos. Whispers and murmurs buzzed everywhere. The reporters’ eyes lit up with ex

Without hesitation, I turned around and ran—the faster, the better. All I wanted was to escape this place, Zoe’s control, and this suffocating despair.I didn’t stop until I reached a quiet, secluded alleyway. Only after confirming I was temporarily safe did I finally stop. I gasped desperately for air, my entire body trembling uncontrollably.Still reeling from the shock, I suddenly remembered the “new product launch” Professor Griffin had mentioned on the phone. I recalled Zoe mentioning it to me before. This product launch was crucial to the company’s future. It would be her most important event, so she would definitely be there in person. On top of that, the media and many prominent figures from the business circles would be invited. This would be my only chance and my last ray of hope.I was betting that Zoe was currently busy preparing for the launch and wouldn’t be home. I was betting that exposing her dirty affairs with Joshua right in front of all the media and busines

The day I escaped, I didn’t have a single penny to my name. I was still wearing my hospital gown from the psychiatric hospital, my hair was a tangled mess, and I was covered in grime from head to toe.Passersby avoided me like the plague. Some even stared at me with uncomfortable, judging eyes, assuming I was nothing more than a lunatic.I wandered down the street. Only when a gust of cold wind hit me did my mind slowly begin to clear. I needed a phone; I needed to reach out to someone who could actually help me.Mustering all my courage, I walked up to the entrance of a shopping mall, stopped a kind-looking middle-aged woman, and asked if I could borrow her phone. She hesitated for a moment but handed it over in the end.I gripped the phone so tightly that my fingers started to tremble, but I had no idea who to call.Should I call the police? Looking the way I did, the police certainly wouldn’t believe anything I said. Instead, they would contact Zoe, who would have me thrown rig

Those provocative messages immediately ignited the rage inside me, burning away the last trace of my sanity. Without a second thought, phone in hand, I stormed right into Zoe’s company.I went straight to the board of directors to report her inappropriate relationship with Joshua, as well as her illegal embezzlement and transfer of company assets for personal gain using corporate resources. However, the board of directors merely brushed me off with half-hearted responses.“Mr. Hayes, this is a private matter between Ms. Nicholson and Mr. Green. We have no right to interfere. "Besides, Ms. Nicholson is one of the co-founders of this company. Her public image directly impacts our reputation. We ask that you think twice before acting, Mr. Hayes. Don’t ruin Ms. Nicholson’s reputation and destroy the company’s future out of a moment of impulse.”Their words served as a warning for me to stop prying and leave Zoe alone. I knew deep down that they had long been in cahoots with Zoe. Bou

Numbly, I handled my grandmother’s funeral arrangements. For a whole week, I was in a daze. I didn’t eat, drink, cry, or make a scene. I was like a walking corpse—an empty shell stripped of its soul.My grandmother was my only surviving family in this entire world. Now that she was gone, I was truly all alone, with no one left to lean on.On the eighth day, Zoe finally came home. She was wearing a beautiful dress, and her face radiated a glow of someone who had just returned from a trip. The moment she saw me, she barely managed a guilty look on her face. “Connor, I’m sorry. I–”Before she could finish her sentence, I lunged at her like a madman. I grabbed her by the throat, my eyes bloodshot as I directed all my rage into my grip.“Zoe Nicholson, you absolute bitch! You killed my grandmother! She was in critical condition! I called you over a hundred times! And what were you doing? You were off on a vacation with Joshua! Tell me, do you even have a heart?”Her face quickly tu
