Chapter 3

作者: Twinkling Stars
I couldn’t forgive her, nor could I just walk away right then. All I could do was use the most foolish, painful method of slowly wearing away all my feelings for her.

Day after day, I quietly gathered evidence of her betrayal with Joshua. Six months was more than enough time for me to grow completely numb and collect everything I needed.

I secretly recorded their phone calls. I took photographs and videos of their intimate moments. I gathered proof that Zoe was using company resources to pave the way for Joshua’s career. I even obtained detailed records of her secretly transferring our joint assets.

I was simply waiting for the right moment—an opportunity that would ruin both her and Joshua and give them zero chance at redemption.

I had thought I would wait until my grandmother recovered. Then, I would file for divorce, lay out all the evidence, and make Zoe pay the price she deserved, but I never expected the unexpected to strike so quickly and suddenly.

My grandmother’s condition suddenly deteriorated. The doctor said she needed surgery immediately, or she wouldn’t make it through the night.

I called Zoe right away so she could contact the hospital and arrange the necessary paperwork and logistics. Yet, no matter how many times I called, she didn’t pick up.

I dialed her number again and again. From dawn until dusk, I called her over a hundred times. I kept calling until my phone ran out of battery, but she never answered.

I was pacing like a cat on a hot tin roof. I rushed to Zoe’s company, only to be told by the employees that she had taken time off and gone on a trip with Joshua.

A trip? While my grandmother was in critical condition and desperately needed surgery, she had gone on vacation with Joshua?

I refused to accept it, so I borrowed someone else’s phone and kept calling her. After counting endless dials, the line finally connected. However, Zoe wasn’t the one who picked up.

“Hello? Who is this?” Joshua’s voice came through impatiently, and he sounded like he was suppressing a giggle.

“Where is Zoe? Put her on the phone!” I forced down the rage burning inside my chest, my voice so raspy it was barely recognizable.

Joshua chuckled and replied sarcastically, “Oh, it’s Connor. Zoe is taking a shower right now, so she can’t come to the phone.

"By the way, I forgot to mention. We’re in Soreno right now. The view here is amazing. The ocean breeze takes all your troubles away. Zoe is having the time of her life, so she doesn’t have time to deal with your pathetic problems.”

My brain went blank, and the phone slipped from my hand and landed on the floor. The screen shattered instantly, mirroring my shattered heart.

Vaguely, I heard Zoe’s voice through the speaker. “Joshua, who is that? What’s all that noise?”

Joshua replied with a dismissive, nonchalant tone, “It’s nothing. Just a spam caller. I hung up.”

With that, the call was cut off.

I crouched down and picked up the broken phone.

The glass shards sliced into my fingertips, drawing blood, but I felt no pain whatsoever. Instead, rage and despair consumed me.

For the next few hours, I went mad. I ran everywhere looking for help, asking anyone I could for money. I even begged the doctor to perform the surgery on my grandmother first. Moved by my sheer desperation, the doctor finally nodded and agreed.

I stood outside the operating room the entire night. Over and over again, I prayed that my grandmother would be safe and make it through this ordeal smoothly.

However, when the door to the operating room finally opened, the doctor walked out, shook his head, and said, “I’m so sorry. We did everything we could.”

At that moment, every last bit of hope crumbled. My grandmother passed away after all. Because the surgery had been delayed for too long, she had missed her critical window for treatment.

Murmurs erupted from the audience once again, condemning and accusing them.“I can’t believe that’s the kind of person Ms. Nicholson is. She’s heartless!”“Embezzling company funds, transferring joint assets, and being so heartless? Who does she think she is?”“And Mr. Green isn’t any better! Using a woman to climb his way to the top? How sickening!”Reporters swarmed forward, shoving their microphones right into Zoe’s and Joshua’s faces.“Ms. Nicholson, are these pieces of evidence authentic?”“Mr. Green, have you and Ms. Nicholson been involved for a long time? Did you both intentionally deceive the public?”“Ms. Nicholson, do you have any explanation for embezzling corporate funds and transferring joint assets?”Surrounded by the crowd, Zoe and Joshua stood frozen, their faces pale. They opened their mouths to speak, but not a single word came out.Right at that moment, several police officers stepped into the venue.“Zoe Nicholson, Joshua Green. We received a report alleg

The host froze, and the smile on his face stiffened. He looked at me, confused. “Sir, who are you? Can I help you with something?”In an instant, every eye in the room focused on me. Some were puzzled, some curious, and others clearly annoyed. On the other hand, Zoe’s face turned deadly pale, and a flash of panic darted through her eyes. She stared at me intently, as if she couldn’t believe what she was seeing.Joshua narrowed his eyes, his voice cold. “Who are you? Security, get him out of here!”Several security guards immediately rushed forward, preparing to drag me away. However, I took a step back and held the flash drive high in the air.My voice was raspy yet firm as it echoed loudly across the entire venue. “It doesn’t matter who I am. What matters is that I hold the secret you both want to hide the most. Zoe, Joshua, it’s time to show your true colors!”The crowd instantly erupted into chaos. Whispers and murmurs buzzed everywhere. The reporters’ eyes lit up with ex

Without hesitation, I turned around and ran—the faster, the better. All I wanted was to escape this place, Zoe’s control, and this suffocating despair.I didn’t stop until I reached a quiet, secluded alleyway. Only after confirming I was temporarily safe did I finally stop. I gasped desperately for air, my entire body trembling uncontrollably.Still reeling from the shock, I suddenly remembered the “new product launch” Professor Griffin had mentioned on the phone. I recalled Zoe mentioning it to me before. This product launch was crucial to the company’s future. It would be her most important event, so she would definitely be there in person. On top of that, the media and many prominent figures from the business circles would be invited. This would be my only chance and my last ray of hope.I was betting that Zoe was currently busy preparing for the launch and wouldn’t be home. I was betting that exposing her dirty affairs with Joshua right in front of all the media and busines

The day I escaped, I didn’t have a single penny to my name. I was still wearing my hospital gown from the psychiatric hospital, my hair was a tangled mess, and I was covered in grime from head to toe.Passersby avoided me like the plague. Some even stared at me with uncomfortable, judging eyes, assuming I was nothing more than a lunatic.I wandered down the street. Only when a gust of cold wind hit me did my mind slowly begin to clear. I needed a phone; I needed to reach out to someone who could actually help me.Mustering all my courage, I walked up to the entrance of a shopping mall, stopped a kind-looking middle-aged woman, and asked if I could borrow her phone. She hesitated for a moment but handed it over in the end.I gripped the phone so tightly that my fingers started to tremble, but I had no idea who to call.Should I call the police? Looking the way I did, the police certainly wouldn’t believe anything I said. Instead, they would contact Zoe, who would have me thrown rig

Those provocative messages immediately ignited the rage inside me, burning away the last trace of my sanity. Without a second thought, phone in hand, I stormed right into Zoe’s company.I went straight to the board of directors to report her inappropriate relationship with Joshua, as well as her illegal embezzlement and transfer of company assets for personal gain using corporate resources. However, the board of directors merely brushed me off with half-hearted responses.“Mr. Hayes, this is a private matter between Ms. Nicholson and Mr. Green. We have no right to interfere. "Besides, Ms. Nicholson is one of the co-founders of this company. Her public image directly impacts our reputation. We ask that you think twice before acting, Mr. Hayes. Don’t ruin Ms. Nicholson’s reputation and destroy the company’s future out of a moment of impulse.”Their words served as a warning for me to stop prying and leave Zoe alone. I knew deep down that they had long been in cahoots with Zoe. Bou

Numbly, I handled my grandmother’s funeral arrangements. For a whole week, I was in a daze. I didn’t eat, drink, cry, or make a scene. I was like a walking corpse—an empty shell stripped of its soul.My grandmother was my only surviving family in this entire world. Now that she was gone, I was truly all alone, with no one left to lean on.On the eighth day, Zoe finally came home. She was wearing a beautiful dress, and her face radiated a glow of someone who had just returned from a trip. The moment she saw me, she barely managed a guilty look on her face. “Connor, I’m sorry. I–”Before she could finish her sentence, I lunged at her like a madman. I grabbed her by the throat, my eyes bloodshot as I directed all my rage into my grip.“Zoe Nicholson, you absolute bitch! You killed my grandmother! She was in critical condition! I called you over a hundred times! And what were you doing? You were off on a vacation with Joshua! Tell me, do you even have a heart?”Her face quickly tu
