003

“Damn it.” The words left my mouth before I could think.

Alexander raised a brow, “Mind your words, Miss. Let's not forget where you stand.”

Where I stand?

I wanted to wipe that dirty smirk off his face but I swallowed the urge and simply worked forward.

In fact the reason I had even arrived in this company was starting to blur in my mind.

Oh yes! Keep it together Chloe.

You are here for a job.

A job as a personal assistant.

It's not hard and you also have experience doing quite a lot of this.

I watched Alexander sit up straight, his eyes directly on me.

“We can do this the hard way or the easy way, Chloe.” He said, rising up from his seat.

“And I, for once, haven't been able to get my mind away from last night.” He made a curve around his desk.

My heartbeats increased but I took a deep breath.

There was nothing to panic about.

Alexander was my childhood friend.

Someone I had just slept with—

A tiny voice whispered in my head.

“Wouldn't we continue the interview for the job post?” I asked, maintaining composure in the best way I could.

In that moment, a round of laughter escaped his lips.

At the deep rich sound, a vein popped up in my head.

I wanted to say something but I remembered that he was still my boss.

“I prepared a few reasons why I'd be the best person for this job. I am very much sure that hiring me would be a boost to your personal growth.”

I continued, despite the fact that his laughter was still ringing.

“Chloe, enough.” Alexander held out his hand, and I stopped.

He was the boss after all.

“You have the job.” He gave me a smile and rested on his desk, his muscles drawing tight within that perfectly tailored suit.

I swallowed, wetting my parched throat. No wonder he was able to seduce me the other time.

“I do?” A surprise look appeared on my face. Was it because of last night?

At that thought, I frowned immediately.

I didn't want to get a position because I gave my body.

Alexander must have sensed my thoughts because he simply shook his head, “It wasn't because of last night. Even if you applied before then, I'd have given you the job.”

He raised himself from his resting position and moved forward, leaving me basically no space to breathe.

“What do you mean?” It was a question I dared to ask.

“I'm no longer looking for a personal assistant. In fact, I'm looking for a personal home and lifestyle caretaker.” He said, slowly stroking his chin.

I could bet that was a job title he had just made up on the spot.

But I held back my tongue.

“And what do you expect me to do? I mean, what are my job details?” I asked cautiously.

Alexander cleared his throat, “You'd be moving in with me, and be in charge of my everyday life. You'd follow me to events, and meetings, and would be in control of every staff that I have hired.”

What?

“That’s basically getting married to you?” The sentence slipped out before I could control my thoughts.

“‘Marry’ is rather a strong word, but if that's easier for you to understand.” Alexander chuckled, moving forward to rub my cheeks.

I didn't move, and I had no reason for staying there.

His blue eyes seemed to very much draw me in, mirroring something hypnotic.

“I'd like you to be a temporary wife then. It's for a project of mine and you just happened to be the best person. The pay is two hundred thousand dollars monthly.” Alexander uttered, and his palm left my cheek, suddenly replaced by the chill of the cold air.

Initially, I wanted to complain about the fact that he was crossing his boundaries.

But hearing that price, it was like a dream come through.

“When do I start?” I said, quickly.

“This evening, at the Deluxe Felix ball, hosted by the First Family.” Alexander said, and he was way too casual about it. “Here's my card. The address is written on it, and you'd see a dress tailored exactly for you.”

I sighed, “Did you already know I'd accept this?”

Alexander chuckled, “I have known you since you were a kid. What did you expect?”

Everything happened so fast.

One minute, I was crashing out about my broken state and the heartbreak I had felt.

Next minute, I was standing in front of a massive mansion.

How do I even break all this to Mia?

I didn't know what she would think either.

I shook my head to clear my thoughts and walked in.

Strangely, the door was open.

“Good Morning, Miss. The young master informed us that you'd be arriving.” A voice nearly jolted me out of my skin.

It belonged to a middle aged man.

Alexander even had a butler, and my eyes didn't ignore the fleet of cars I had seen parked outside.

Did I underestimate how rich he was?

“Uhm.. Yes, My name is Chloe. I'll be resuming work today.” I said, in my best polite voice.

Trying my best not to gush over the aesthetics of such a big house.

“Please allow me to show you to your room.” The man said, and I simply followed him up a beautiful decorated resin made stairs.

The room that was called mine was bigger than my apartment.

“Are you sure this is the right room?” I asked in surprise and the man simply gave me a nod, before leaving.

“Okay you have to be dreaming, Chloe. There's no way this just happened and now you live in a big mansion.”

I was about to yell out to the ceiling when the butler walked in, holding an iPad

“The Boss says I should give you, and you'd find all his schedules for your perusal.”

Nodding in response, I took the iPad and went to work. It was exactly eight pm when I opened my eyes.

I had dozed off, and the party had started an hour ago.

Rushing into the bathroom, I pulled a quickie and wore the gown Alexander had gotten for me.

It fitted me perfectly, highlighting my unique features.

How had he been so thoughtful to get me something like this?

“I'm so sorry, Alexander.” I quickly rushed to send a text.

“I'd make it there soon.”

The driver took me in the car, and I urged him to hurry up.

“Thank you so much.” I quickly said, before walking into the ball.

The moment I stepped inside, I realised that this wasn't a place for me.

Everyone looked like they had been born and bred here.

“Chloe? Is that actually you?” Before I could get myself, a voice infiltrated my thoughts, and I turned around.

It had been three days. Why were they still showing their faces in my life?

I wanted to ignore and turn around, but Mark appeared in my line of sight.

They had cornered me.

“Chloe. This is a gathering of elites. Did you somehow sneak into this place?” Ruby’s shrill voice echoed in my ears.

But I remained silent.

I wouldn't let either of them get the satisfaction of my rebuttal.

“Excuse me.” I said, turning to leave.

“Are you so pathetic? I already told you that I wasn't interested in you and there's no way I'm giving you back that money. It's mine too.”

I chuckled. My monthly salary was far more than that measly sum.

“It seems you are mistaken, or you are both blind.” I had spotted Alexander and he was coming towards me.

“I am here with my husband.” I said, dropping my gaze to their level.

Mark was the first one to let out a chuckle.

“There's no way someone like you would get married. Don't you understand the reason why I ditched you?” He rolled his eyes, wrapping his arm around Ruby and pulling her in.

“I don't care, Mark. I have gotten rid of a liability like you too. You call yourself a man, yet you can't even afford to support your own dreams.”

My comeback was brutal and at the right time, Alexander walked.

Before I could even say the word, Ruby had shoved me aside.

“Mr. Alexander! This lady is my step sister and I know her. She's not meant to be at this party. The security men will be here soon.” Ruby said.

For someone who considered herself to be bright, how couldn't she see the jaw clench Alexander had made.

I laughed within.

Maybe silence was the best option for now.

Because I wondered how this husband would handle such a matter for his newly employed wife.

"Are you just going to stare at me, or are you going to yell at me for drinking your fancy scotch?" I hiccupped, wiping a mixture of rain and tears from my face."You look like a drowned rat, Chloe," Alexander’s deep, raspy voice rumbled through the quiet room. As my eyes adjusted to the bright light, I noticed the heavy crystal tumbler in his hand, with amber liquid swirling at the bottom. He had been sitting alone in the pitch black, drinking."Well, this drowned rat just lost her fiancé, her life savings, and her dignity!" I yelled back, holding the heavy glass bottle tightly to my chest. "So back off!"Alexander downed the rest of his glass in one gulp. He set the empty glass down on a side table and took a slow step toward me. "Keep your voice down. And give me the bottle. You've had enough.""Make me, Alexander," I challenged, raising the bottle to my lips for another swig.He moved so fast I barely saw it. In one second, he was across the room, and in the next, his large, warm

I laughed, balancing my phone between my ear and my shoulder."Don't even remind me, Chloe," my best friend, Mia, groaned loudly through the speaker. "Fashion Week is a total nightmare. My boss is screaming at models, my feet are bleeding, and I would give anything to be back in the city with you right now.""Well, you are missing out," I teased her, turning off my car engine. "I am parked outside Mark's apartment right now. I have the chocolate cake from that fancy bakery he loves. And, I got the big gift.""Wait, you actually bought it?" Mia gasped. "The Rolex?""I did!" I smiled, looking at the shiny green box on my passenger seat. "I saved up for six straight months for this watch.""Chloe, you are crazy! You spoil that man way too much," Mia complained. "He better drop to his knees and kiss your feet tonight.""He has been so stressed about trying to start his own business," I explained. "I just want
