Chapter 2

Author: Eternal Pulse
Just as I was about to struggle, those strange lines of text appeared again in front of me.

[Wait, what am I even reading? Is this supposed to be a tragic historical romance or something way messier?]

[To be fair, the setting did mention that the Widow's Curse can be cured with a blood transfusion, but the person giving the blood has to die.]

[Why not have the villainess do it for our girl? If she dies, she can go back to the modern world anyway.]

[Come on. She's the evil side character…]

I didn't read the rest.

The words "go back to the modern world" had already hooked me completely.

Scott saw the dazed look on my face and hesitated for a second before quickly letting go of me.

I staggered toward the bedside, grabbed a dagger, and sliced it across my wrist. Beads of blood slipped down my pale skin and dripped into a porcelain bowl.

"What are you doing?" Scott shouted.

I gave him a careful, ingratiating smile.

"I heard blood can help ease the poison. Mine should work as medicine for her."

I wanted to say more, to show just how sincere I was about helping him and Jennifer.

But I was already badly injured. Losing that much blood was too much. My vision went black, and I collapsed.

My parents died when I was young. I grew up drifting between relatives' homes.

While other kids lived carefree, I had already learned how to read the room and please the adults around me, just to make sure I got enough to eat each day.

Then I ended up inside this story, cast as the villainess who would eventually be killed by the male and female leads together.

So I made up my mind.

I would play along and keep them both happy to survive the entire plot.

And when I finally made it back to the modern world and got the reward money, I could use it to treat my cancer and actually live my life…

Halfway through that thought, I woke up.

Scott sat by my bed, his eyes red from exhaustion. The moment our eyes met, he pulled me into his arms so tightly that I could barely breathe.

"Lillian, I'm warning you. Don't ever hurt yourself again. Your life belongs to me."

Wow. Possessive much?

But he was supposed to belong to the heroine.

I was just about to push him away when a servant stumbled in, breathless.

"General Holden, something's wrong! Ms. Cross says Lady Holden poisoned the blood. She's in severe pain and crying, asking to see you!"

Scott's expression changed instantly. He shoved me aside without hesitation and rushed out toward Jennifer's room.

I hurried after him.

"Lillian, I know you resent me… That you blame me for taking General Holden's attention…"

Jennifer lay curled beneath the blankets, her face pale.

"But how could you do this? I'm already suffering from this strange curse, and you still poisoned the blood you gave me… It hurts so much…"

The air around Scott turned ice cold.

He strode up to me, raising his hand. I squeezed my eyes shut on instinct.

But the slap never came.

His expression tightened, his voice low.

"Get out."

I froze for half a second.

Then I dropped to my knees and started slapping myself across the face, over and over.

"This is all my fault! I'm the worst! Just kill me. Let me make up for it!"

I was the master at reading the room. Timing was everything.

Scott's temple twitched. He didn't even want to look at me anymore.

"Lock her up. Don't let her keep acting like a lunatic."

I smelled the sharp scent of disinfectant and heard the steady beeping of machines. My eyelids felt heavy, but I forced them open just a crack.I was greeted by a blinding white light."Doctor! Doctor! The patient in bed three is awake!"A nurse's excited voice rang out, followed by hurried footsteps.I lay on a stark white hospital bed, tubes running from my body. I was weak, but conscious."This is incredible. A true medical miracle!" The doctor in glasses clicked his tongue as he looked over my charts. "She's been in a coma for nearly a year, and the brain tumor has actually shrunk. All her vitals are improving."-It took me a few days to piece everything together.I had been in a car accident in the modern world. The head injury, combined with the malignant tumor I had already been diagnosed with, had left me in a vegetative state.During everything that happened in that other world, my real body had been lying here in the hospital the entire time.Three months later, I

Scott closed the ledger and shut his eyes. When he opened them again, they were bloodshot. He changed my clothes himself, dressing me in the finest outfit I had. Then he went to his private treasury and brought out a set of red gold jewelry set with rubies, clumsily fastening it on me piece by piece. The deep red stones reflected against my pale face, giving it a strange, almost haunting beauty."Do you like it, Lillian?" he spoke softly, as if he were talking to himself. "You look beautiful wearing this. Why didn't you ever wear anything like this before? I'm sorry…"Scott dropped to one knee in front of the coffin, his forehead pressed against the cold wood as he repeated it over and over."I'm sorry, Lillian… I'm sorry…"His shoulders trembled. This man, who had always been ruthless and unshakable on the battlefield, was now crying like a lost child.Too bad the person he was apologizing to could no longer give any reaction to him.I hovered above, watching everything with

All the color drained from Jennifer's face."One more thing," Scott said, his voice turning colder by the second. "Dr. Sarratt."The royal physician, who had been standing by, bowed. "Yes, General Holden?""When you examined Ms. Cross before, you confirmed it was the Widow's Curse?"Arthur Sarratt broke into a cold sweat."At the time, the symptoms Ms. Cross described, along with her pulse, which was rapid, unstable, and irregular, did resemble the records of the Widow's Curse by about 70%.""Resemble?" Scott seized on the word. "Then examine her again. Carefully."Arthur forced himself forward.Jennifer tried to pull back, but one look from Scott froze her in place. This time, Arthur took much longer. His brows drew tighter and tighter. After a while, he withdrew his hand and dropped to his knees with a thud, his voice shaking."General Holden… Ms. Cross's pulse is steady and strong. It's only slightly weak from stress. There is no sign of any curse. There's no sign of pregn

Scott gripped the notebook so tightly that his knuckles turned white. His eyes kept returning to the words "go home."Holden Residence had never been her home.I hovered beside him, watching the number above his head flicker like it had lost control. It went from 70 to 75… 78…Until it finally stopped at 80.His affection for me, the "vicious wife" he hadn't even bothered to look at for three years, had shot up to 80.Jennifer couldn't sit still anymore. She couldn't stand watching his attention stay fixed on a corpse and a worn-out notebook. She changed into something simpler, no makeup, her eyes red and swollen, and came to the family chapel. For now, Scott had placed my body in an empty room in the side courtyard."Scott…"Her tears started falling before she even finished speaking."Lillian must have hated me so much to choose such a cruel, final way to make me live the rest of my life in guilt… She was so heartless…"Scott stood before the altar, lighting the candles

Jennifer spoke softly, her voice fragile, "Scott… Why would Lillian do something like this? Why would she use such dark methods…""Dark methods?" Scott cut her off, his sharp gaze sweeping over her. "Whether it is or not, we'll wait for the royal physician to confirm."She flinched under his stare, her eyes filling with tears. "I was only worried…""Go back and rest." His tone left no room for argument. He didn't even look at her again. "You're pregnant. You shouldn't be around this."Jennifer bit her lip and let the maids help her out, glancing back every few steps. The royal physician arrived quickly. Even he was shaken at the sight of the tub full of blood and the body inside.Scott handed him the letter and the sketches of blood vessels. The physician studied them over and over, then examined the tub and the amount of blood. Finally, with trembling hands, he opened an old medical text he carried and searched through it for a long time."General Holden…"Sweat beaded on his

The door slammed open with a deafening crash, and harsh light flooded the room.I had already become a drifting spirit, hovering above the bathtub.Below me, my body lay soaked in dark, thick blood. My wrist rested against the edge, the wound split open and ugly. My face was pale as paper, my damp hair clinging to my cheeks. It was honestly not a pretty sight.Scott stood in the doorway, his shadow stretched long behind him.All the anger he had come in with froze the second he saw the room. The letter slipped from his fingers and fluttered to the floor."Lillian?"His voice came out hoarse, as if it had to force its way up from his throat.Jennifer followed behind him, letting out a sharp gasp right on cue. She covered her mouth, tears spilling instantly as she leaned into him."Scott! Lillian… How did she… This is horrible!"Her face was buried against his chest, her shoulders trembling, but through her tears, her eyes stayed fixed on his expression.Scott didn't pull her
