Chapter 4

Author: Frostveil
I rented a small apartment on the outskirts of the city with only one bedroom. Though it couldn't compare to Camilla's massive luxury apartment, it made me feel a lot more at ease.

At first, everything went smoothly, but I kept running into a wall when it came to finding a job.

Since I still needed to transfer money over to the orphanage regularly, I decided that I would get a part-time job at a restaurant for now.

The restaurant was running an event, so I stood outside the door, handing out flyers.

"Well, well, if it isn't the little deaf boy!"

I turned in the direction of the voice and saw that it was Caleb.

Next to him were Nathan and Camilla, who were arm in arm in an intimate manner.

Upon spotting me, Nathan acted as if he had suddenly realized the awkwardness of the situation and moved to extricate his arm, only for Camilla to tighten her hold on him.

With a condescending sneer, Camilla said, "You were kicking up such a fuss, insistent on leaving me, yet look at where that's gotten you? You're just a lowly waiter at a restaurant!"

Nathan and Caleb burst into laughter at her words.

"Camilla, how about we eat here? Although it's kind of cheap…" Caleb suggested.

After giving it a few seconds of consideration, Camilla agreed.

At first, their decision had nothing to do with me, but then the manager told me that they had specifically requested that I serve them.

When I refused, the manager snatched the flyers from me. "You don't get to refuse."

Technically, she was right in that I couldn't say no.

Camilla and the others were clearly out to get me, either complaining that this dish was too salty or that one was too bland.

My flustered demeanor only caused them to smile in satisfaction.

At last, I lost my temper and snapped back at them, but just as I turned to leave, Nathan called out and stopped me.

Pointing at the arrabbiata pasta on the table, he said gently, "Finish that plate, and we can forget about this matter."

I was allergic to chilli, and I knew that they had specifically chosen to get the extra hot option when placing their orders. Hence, I was about to refuse, but then Camilla ordered Caleb to grab my hands.

She clearly knew that I was allergic, yet she still allowed Nathan to stuff a forkful of pasta into my mouth.

Mustering all my strength, I pulled free of Caleb's grip and shoved Nathan hard, causing the entire plate of pasta to splatter against his suit.

Immediately, the pristine white suit was stained with red.

Nathan turned to Camilla with reddened eyes and an utterly pitiful expression on his face, as though he were the victim here.

Camilla called for the manager, demanding that I apologize even though the one who had been forced was me.

When I stubbornly refused to apologize, the manager ended up firing me.

After ending my shift, I walked out of the restaurant, only to see Camilla's Rolls-Royce parked by the roadside. She was alone inside, with no sign of Nathan beside her.

Upon spotting me, she got out of her car and approached me.

"Get in the car."

Ignoring her, I turned to make my way to the subway station.

She frowned at my action. In the past, I had never once lost my temper at her, so after snubbing her multiple times over the past two days, she was more than a little displeased.

Taking hold of my hand, she forcefully dragged me into the car.

I struggled desperately to open the car door and escape, but she was quick to lock the door. Only then did she speak up.

"If you want to drag Mr. Manon and the orphanage into trouble alongside you, then continue with your tantrum."

My hand froze over the car door handle.

Mr. Manon was the director of the orphanage I had come from and the most important person to me, a fact that she was well aware of, yet here she was, threatening me with him and the orphanage.

Abandoning any attempts to escape, I sat back quietly in my seat, the tense atmosphere in the vehicle almost suffocating me.

Satisfied with my compliance, she reached out to pat my head. "Good boy. Move back in and don't piss me off again, okay? We'll get married next month as planned. You won't be able to survive if you leave me."

Camilla didn't give up even after leaving that day. She stayed back in Smallville and would appear at my shop every day with a bouquet, then order several of the pastries and remain there until closing time.It was truly quite a headache. When Elaine moved to chase her away, I waved my hand at her to stop her, telling her that I would simply treat it as extra income for the shop. This continued for the next two weeks until the shop suddenly stopped having any customers for several days in a row.One morning, I was in the kitchen, preparing the ingredients for the day ahead when Elaine called out to me, "Ricky, you should come and see this."After exiting the kitchen, I shot her a playful glare. This mischievous woman had switched to calling me "Ricky" instead of "Rick" ever since that day.The order printer was spitting out tickets non-stop. Even when the stream of order slips was over three feet long, it still didn't stop.Five minutes later, the printer finally stopped.I pic

I opened up a dessert shop in Smallville, a sleepy town whose inhabitants took things slow and easy. Because of this, the store's operating hours were only from ten in the morning to four in the afternoon.Slowly but surely, business grew for the shop. Unable to handle the workload alone anymore, I decided to hire someone to help me out. When I first started up this store, Elaine Goodman was a frequent customer who loved to sit down for hours as she typed away at her laptop. As time went by, we grew closer and more familiar with each other. Eventually, she told me that she had been having difficulty finding a job, and since I just so happened to need a helper, we swiftly came to an agreement.Like me, she also had impaired hearing. However, she was luckier than me in that her left ear was healthy. One day, I was busy in the kitchen when she told me that a customer was specifically requesting to meet me.I made a sound to acknowledge her words, then placed down the rolling pin I h

Only I knew that what was once broken couldn't be mended and that we hadn't actually reconciled. Beneath the calm waves surged a fierce current.Due to my hospitalization, my wedding with Camilla was pushed back three months. She began to search online for all sorts of wedding ideas, which she would then present to me."Honey, how about we hold it at the beach? We could parachute off a plane. That would surely leave a lasting impression on the guests."Excitement colored her voice as she spoke, as though she truly was looking forward to marrying me.Previously, I had been alone in handling all the details of the wedding. No matter what I asked her, she would always tell me to decide and that it was okay as long as I liked it.Either that, or she would brush me off with messages like, "I'm busy. Hendrick, stop bothering me with such small matters."Taking in her excited demeanor now, I made sure to respond with equal fervor, giving her more than adequate emotional feedback by agr

The next time I opened my eyes, I was already in the hospital.Camilla was sitting by my bed, and when she saw me wake, her eyes actually reddened.Dark shadows lined the area beneath her eyes, while her complexion was deathly pale. She looked completely different from her usual calm and composed self.Noticing the dazed look in my eyes, she pulled me into a tight hug."Hendrick, I'm so glad that you're okay. You truly gave me quite a scare. I'll revise my plans for the wedding and throw you another one, one even grander than the first."A tear slid from the corner of my eye without me realizing it. I didn't speak, for I didn't know what I could say. After that, Camilla kept watch over me for the entire duration of my stay in the hospital. It was as though all the work she had placed before me in the past was now no longer important. When I refused to let her come close to me, she curled up on the couch. It was a rather pitiful sight, her tall figure barely fitting in it.Every

The night of the gala, Nathan was also present. He was now Camilla's secretary, so it wasn't at all strange for him to attend as well.He was dressed in a form-fitting champagne suit today. When he spotted me, he deliberately straightened his tie, instantly drawing my attention to the ruby brooch pinned to his lapel.I recognized it as the auction piece Camilla had bought a few days ago for an exorbitant price. The final price she had paid far exceeded what it was actually worth, so the media outlets were claiming that she was doing it all to please her fiance.I dipped my head at Nathan and mouthed to him, "You're not worthy."That pissed him off greatly, but he couldn't throw a fit right there, as all of the city's elites and influential figures had come to this gala tonight. Everyone was dying to build a connection with Kevin, but Nathan certainly didn't dare do so.Camilla led me over to Kevin and his wife, her arm hooked through mine intimately."Ms. Stenson, you and your fi

That night, I told the butler that I was feeling unwell and wanted to retire early. After he delivered me a warm glass of milk, I instructed him to only come and wake me up the next afternoon. Then, before going to bed, I did something I had never done before—I called Camilla and exchanged sweet nothings with her for a while.Only once I had confirmed that she was indeed out on a business trip did I relax.Following that, I simply waited until everybody else in the house had gone to sleep before sneaking out of my room and heading downstairs in complete darkness.Since I wasn't bringing any luggage with me this time, it was much easier for me to move around.I had already bought my flight ticket to Morington yesterday and scheduled a taxi ride ahead of time, so the taxi should be waiting for me by the entrance to the back garden right now.I carefully made my way through the dark to ensure that I didn't make a single sound. Then, after climbing over the fence in the back garden,
