CHAPTER 5

The top floor of Titan Group headquarters was dead quiet. The only illumination came from the eerie, pulsing blue light emitted by the silver key sitting on my desk and the gray morning daylight filtering through the window blinds.

Theodore grabbed my arm, his grip firm and reassuring. "Leave everything except the key, Evelyn! Move right now!"

I snatched the glowing silver key from the velvet box. The moment my bare skin touched the cool metal, a strange, warm sensation rushed up my arm, making my heart race. The blue light pulsed brighter, projecting a series of tiny, floating geometric coordinates onto the palm of my hand like golden dust.

"It's reacting to your bloodline," Theodore muttered, pulling me swiftly toward the concealed private elevator hidden behind my main bookshelf. "Your biological father built that cryptographic lock to respond strictly to direct genetic contact. Nobody else on earth can activate that key."

"Who is coming for us, Theodore?" I demanded as he slammed his palm against the elevator’s biometric override panel. "Tell me the truth!"

"The mercenaries hired by Marcus Vance—my cousin, and the man who orchestrated the mountain fire twenty years ago," Theodore answered grimly as the heavy steel elevator doors slid shut. "When Marcus realized you were building Titan Group into a global power, he panicked. He used Mark as a clueless puppet to keep you distracted, hoping Mark would strip you of your legal standing before you ever discovered your true heritage."

The elevator dropped rapidly toward the subterranean parking level. As we descended, the entire concrete structure shuddered slightly as a muted explosion sounded from the upper floors. They were already inside the building, blowing through security doors.

"Is Mark involved in this murder plot too?" I asked, clutching the key tightly against my chest.

"Mark is far too stupid to be involved in a plot of this scale," Theodore replied as the elevator doors dinged open into the dark basement garage. "Mark was just a disposable pawn. Marcus used his endless vanity and arrogance to keep you contained in a quiet kitchen."

We sprinted across the cold concrete floor toward Theodore’s heavy armored black SUV. The garage was eerily silent, the sharp smell of damp gasoline and ozone hanging thick in the air.

Just as Theodore reached for the driver's door handle, the sharp, deafening sound of automatic gunfire shattered the silence. Bullets pinged violently against the SUV's reinforced steel frame, throwing bright sparks into the shadows.

"Get down!" Theodore roared, shoving me down behind the heavy rear tire while drawing his own sidearm with practiced ease.

Three dark figures dressed in tactical gear and matte-black helmets stepped out from behind the massive concrete pillars, their weapon lights cutting through the darkness.

"Hand over the girl and the key, Theodore!" one of the mercenaries barked through a voice modulator. "Marcus sends his warmest regards!"

Theodore didn't answer with words. He leaned out from behind the rubber tire and fired three precise, rapid shots. Two of the armored figures dropped instantly to the pavement. Theodore grabbed the collar of my jacket, yanked me up, and shoved me into the passenger seat before diving into the driver's side. He slammed the engine start button, shoved the transmission into reverse, and smashed backward through the heavy security gate, roaring out into the rain-slicked city streets.

"We can't stay in the downtown area!" I yelled over the roar of the supercharged engine, frantically checking the rear window. Two black pursuit SUVs had just pulled out of a side alley behind us, their blinding high beams flashing.

"We aren't staying in the city at all," Theodore said, turning the leather wheel sharply as the heavy vehicle skidded around a corner toward the river docks. "My private yacht is docked at Pier 14. It has an encrypted navigation system calibrated specifically to read the key's internal coordinates."

Rain lashed violently against the windshield as we tore through the commercial shipping district. Theodore drove with terrifying, military precision, weaving through heavy early-morning traffic until the tall harbor cranes came into view against the grey sky. He slammed the brakes at the edge of Pier 14, where a sleek, seventy-foot black motor yacht sat idling in the choppy water.

"Get aboard immediately!" Theodore commanded, throwing open his door into the pouring rain.

"Are you coming with me?" I screamed over the howling wind and pounding rain.

"I have to hold the dock!" Theodore yelled back, pulling two fresh magazines from his tactical vest. "If they follow us onto the open water, we won't make it past the harbor defense grid! I will lock the automated dock gates behind you! Go!"

He reached out and grabbed my face with both hands, his dark eyes fierce with an intensity I had never seen in him before. "You survived Mark's cruelty, Evelyn. You built a multi-billion-dollar empire from nothing while hiding in the shadows. Do not let these monsters take what your father died to protect!"

Before I could argue or pull him with me, he shoved me toward the gangway. I scrambled aboard the slick deck just as the two pursuing SUVs tore onto the wooden pier. Theodore stood alone in the middle of the rain-drenched dock, raising his weapon to buy me the precious seconds I needed.

The boat's automated helm system chimed softly as I rushed into the glass wheelhouse. A calm, synthesized voice spoke from the central console: *BIOMETRIC ENCRYPTED KEY DETECTED. ENTERING PRIVATE NAVIGATION PROTOCOL.*

I pressed the glowing silver key deep into the central console slot. The yacht's twin high-performance engines roared to life with massive power, automatically severing the heavy electronic mooring lines and blasting the vessel forward into the choppy, black ocean waves.

Through the rear glass window, I watched the pier recede rapidly into the storm. Muzzle flashes lit up the dark dock like tiny bursts of lightning before a thick curtain of ocean fog swallowed the shoreline completely.

I stood completely alone in the vibrating wheelhouse, gasping for air as the boat cut through the rising Atlantic swells. The digital map on the main navigation screen flared to life in brilliant gold, displaying a long, dotted trajectory pointing far out into the uncharted, dangerous waters of the North Atlantic Ocean.

Two hours passed in complete, nerve-wracking isolation. The city lights were long gone, replaced by endless black water, howling wind, and heavy storm clouds. My mind raced with memories of the past two weeks—from lying broken at the bottom of Mark's staircase to reclaiming my position as CEO, and now sailing toward an ancient legacy I didn't even know existed.

Suddenly, the yacht's long-range radar chimed softly. A massive landmass appeared on the scanners—an unmapped island surrounded by high, jagged stone cliffs and dense gray fog.

As the automated boat slowed its engines, drawing closer to the island's treacherous rocky shore, a massive, ancient stone archway rose out of the mist—a forgotten gateway guarding a dark, hidden harbor. Perched high atop the island's central peak stood an imposing black stone castle, its high spires reaching up into the stormy sky.

The yacht drifted smoothly through the stone archway into the calm, glassy waters of the hidden harbor. But as I stepped out onto the exterior deck to inspect the surroundings, a loud, metallic horn echoed from the castle cliffs above, tearing through the quiet ocean air like a battle cry.

Flames burst to life along the stone ramparts as dozens of armed figures dressed in heavy silver-and-black armor lined the high castle walls, aiming heavy crossbows and blinding searchlights straight down at my vessel.

A booming, stern voice echoed through hidden acoustic horns across the harbor walls:

"An intruder has crossed the blood threshold of the High Throne! Prepare all perimeter defenses and bring me her head!"

CHAPTER FOURBy nine o'clock the following morning, the financial world was in absolute pandemonium. Every major newspaper, corporate blog, and television channel carried the exact same front-page image: Mark Vance bowing in shame at the Grand Annual Gala beneath the bold headline: *THE GHOST QUEEN RETURNS: SECRET CEO OF TITAN GROUP MARRIES THEODORE VANCE.*I sat behind the expansive black mahogany desk on the top floor of Titan Group's corporate headquarters, watching the morning sun stream through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows. The room was cold, clean, and quiet. I was finally sitting in the seat I had earned through eight years of silent, tireless labor. The double doors of my executive suite were suddenly thrown open with a violent bang.Mark burst into the room. He looked unrecognizable. His hair was messy, his expensive suit was rumpled and unbuttoned, and heavy dark circles hung beneath his bloodshot eyes. He looked like a man who hadn't slept a single minute in thirty-si

CHAPTER THREEThe two weeks I spent recovering inside Theodore’s secluded private estate passed in a blur of focused preparation. Theodore did not merely offer me a place to heal; he turned his estate into a command center. Top medical specialists checked my ribs daily, while my personal legal team from Titan Group worked around the clock in the library downstairs. From the screen of my laptop, I watched Vance Enterprises begin its slow, internal bleed. Without my daily oversight, Mark’s upper management was falling into complete chaos. Supply lines were running behind schedule, key clients were complaining about missed deadlines, and Mark was spending most of his time buying expensive jewelry for Sarah and hosting lavish press conferences. He was living on borrowed time, completely unaware that his foundation was crumbling beneath his feet."It is time to leave, Evelyn," Theodore said, entering the study on the evening of the Grand Annual Gala.He brought with him a team of high-end

CHAPTER TWOThe harsh, sterile smell of bleach and antiseptic was the first thing that hit my senses when I woke up. My eyelids felt heavy, like they were made of lead, and every breath I took brought a sharp, burning ache to my right ribs.I blinked slowly, adjusting to the dim light of a private hospital room. The walls were painted a quiet cream, and long linen curtains covered the high windows. A clean IV drip was connected to the back of my left hand, ticking steadily."Do not try to sit up too quickly," a calm, deep voice ordered from the corner of the room.I turned my head carefully. Theodore Vance was sitting in a high-backed leather chair beside the window. He was dressed in a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, reading through a stack of thick legal files. He didn't look tired, nor did he look hurried. He possessed an aura of total, quiet control."Where... where is Mark?" I asked. My voice sounded raspy and thin, like dry leaves scraping across pa

CHAPTER ONEI stood at the back of the crowded banquet hall, holding a glass of cheap champagne that had gone warm in my hand. Around me, bright crystal chandeliers lit up the room, throwing sharp white light over women in silk gowns and men in tailored dark suits. Everyone was laughing, exchanging business cards, and clinking glasses to celebrate the seventh anniversary of Vance Enterprises. In the center of it all stood Mark Vance, my husband. He was twenty-nine, tall, dark-haired, and possessed the kind of sharp jawline that made investors trust him instantly. He looked every bit the powerful CEO the city believed him to be. He was talking to a cluster of bankers, smiling that charismatic smile that had once made my heart race. He didn't look back at me. Not once. For seven years, I had been the silent ghost in Mark’s machine. When he started Vance Enterprises in a cramped, drafty garage with barely enough money for coffee, I was the one who sat beside him until four in the morni
