Chapter 2

Author: Evil SIL
After texting back, I decided to swing by the office to grab my laptop.

When I reached the department doors, I froze.

The access card scanner glowed a solid red.

My access had been revoked.

Through the glass, I could see Dante lounging in my desk chair.

I knocked on the glass.

Dante looked up. When he spotted me, he opened the door just enough and stood there blocking the doorway.

"Don't take this personally, Dr. Carver. Chief Hardy put me in charge of department inventory. I've got to show some results," he said.

"And your idea of showing results is reporting me?"

"I wouldn't put it like that," he said, tilting his head. "If you did nothing wrong, a report won't hurt, right?"

"Dante, do you even know who this hospital—"

He cut me off impatiently. "Enough, Dr. Carver. You're on the verge of losing your license. Do you really think you own the hospital? Save the performance for Chief Hardy.

"It's precisely this arrogance of yours that made me revoke your access. You should remember that you're not above the rest of us."

Anger surged in my chest, but arguing was pointless right now.

"My floor rounds logbook is still in there," I said, reining in my temper.

Dante smirked. "I'm keeping it safe for you."

"I need it right now."

He let out a cold snort. "Dr. Carver, it's not that I won't let you in. But if you step inside and something else goes missing from the inventory, you might not be able to explain yourself. I'm just looking out for you."

Just then, Sofia walked over and stood right behind Dante. "Dr. Carver, you should just go home for now. Let the Medical Affairs Office clear things up first."

"Sofia," I said, locking eyes with her. "That patient in bed 12 last week had major blood pressure swings. I told you to adjust her antihypertensive dose. Did you?"

Her eyes flicked away. "Dante said your standards were too strict. As long as the pressure stays near the threshold, it's fine."

Dante jumped back in. "Dr. Carver, can't we make things a little more relaxed around here? You run this place like a high school boot camp. Everyone's exhausted."

The other doctors behind them nodded along.

"Seriously, Dr. Carver. Your standards are way too high."

"No other department is this rigid."

"Promotions come down to your connection with Chief Hardy anyway. Just make sure the charts are good enough, and you're set."

I stood there, stunned. They had never said a word of this to my face.

"Sofia, half of your board exam study notes were—"

"I know!"

She cut me off, her voice suddenly spiking in volume. "I know you helped me a lot! But Dr. Carver, you can't hold that over my head forever! I have my own clinical judgment. I don't need to follow your orders blindly!"

A few quiet voices chimed in from behind her.

"Yeah, all he does at handoff meetings is criticize us. He treats us like little kids."

"He takes the lead on every complex case. We're stuck as first and second assistants forever."

"Well, he's Chief Hardy's star student after all."

The corners of my mouth twitched into a bitter smile. I had been feeding a pack of ungrateful snakes.

Dante gave me a smug look. "Don't worry, Dr. Carver. I'll make sure your VIP patients are well taken care of."

"What are you talking about?"

"Chief Hardy already approved it. Your high-priority cases are being transferred to me."

A loud ring sounded in my head.

I had spent over six months researching the treatment protocol for that rare pathology.

Chief Hardy had specifically said I was the only one allowed to handle this patient.

"You're lying," I said.

Dante shrugged. "Check the group chat yourself."

I looked down and opened my phone.

Five minutes ago, Chief Hardy had posted a notice. "Effective immediately, all high-priority patients under Dr. Rowan Carver will be reassigned to Dante. All relevant staff, please assist with the handoff."

My heart sank instantly.

How could Chief Hardy hand those patients to Dante?

He had been in the department for barely a month. He barely knew how to change a dressing properly, let alone manage complex cases.

I opened my mouth to demand an explanation, but Dante had already turned around and walked back inside.

Just then, I got a call from Grandma's assistant, David Doyle.

"Mr. Carver, why aren't you and Chief Hardy at the symposium? Mrs. Carver Senior personally secured that spot for Chief Hardy and specifically asked her to bring you along."

I froze.

The symposium?

Chief Hardy had never mentioned a word about my attendance.

Why did she lie to me?

When the new quarter rolled around, the hospital issued an official notice.Dante was publicly reprimanded for violating medical protocols and committing academic misconduct, and his internship was terminated immediately. The department saw a fresh wave of faces, too.Sofia requested a transfer to another department. Before she left, she came by to apologize.Standing before me, she wrung her hands and rambled on.She babbled about how she had lost her mind and how Dante was too manipulative and good at turning people against each other.I kept right on organizing the medication inventory, lining the boxes up neatly. Her voice grew quieter and quieter until she finally let out a heavy sigh and walked away. The incoming junior doctors were green. Their eyes were filled with both excitement and nervousness as they stepped into the department for the first time.On his very first day, one young guy stood awkwardly in the doorway, calling me "Dr. Carver".For a moment, I was remi

Dante's eyes were bloodshot. "You watched me brag and strut around. You must've thought I looked like a complete joke, didn't you?""I do think you're a joke," I finally said. "But not because you're an illegitimate son. It's because you honestly believed being her son meant you were inheriting something. What does she even have for you to inherit? She owns nothing herself."Dante stumbled backward, completely dazed and drained.I stood up and brushed right past him.As I passed him, his voice cracked with bitter indignation. "But she chose me."I paused in my tracks. "Yeah. She chose you."I turned around and looked down at his pathetic, disheveled face. "Have you ever stopped to wonder why she didn't choose me? Because she can never afford what my dad can give me."She's a coward who's terrified of everything, greedy for everything, and ends up keeping nothing. She didn't choose me because my dad is too powerful, and she could never control him."She chose you because you're

Soon, the day Cristina was going to publicly acknowledge her son arrived. She stood at the podium in the academic lecture hall, wearing a crisp white blouse. Pinned to her collar was a golden brooch. It was the very brooch Dad had brought back for her from a business trip to Merriton.Dante stood right behind her.He was wearing a brand-new, high-end suit today, making him look exceptionally polished. His hair was styled meticulously, and a limited-edition luxury watch rested on his wrist. That watch was Dad's, too.His eyes scanned the crowd and zeroed in on me, a provocative smirk spreading across his face. The hospital leadership sat in the front row. The deputy hospital director, Kiera Sanford, flipped through the agenda in front of her with a hint of confusion in her expression. She likely couldn't comprehend why a department chief needed to make such a grand spectacle just to introduce an intern.Once almost everyone had arrived, Cristina cleared her throat and drew th

Dad sounded surprised. "Why are you suddenly asking about that?""Nothing, just checking."With that, I hung up the phone.Dante looked at me, his lips parting slightly."Your dad is Braden Nelson, right?" I asked. His face was drained of all color. "How do you know that?""I don't just know your dad's name. I also happen to know that my dad paid for your dad to finish his postgraduate degree. My mom paid for every school you attended growing up, covering everything from tuition to school fees."Dead silence fell over the department office.Dante's face twisted into an ugly grimace as his voice spiked. "You're lying!""Go ask your dad whose name is on the title deed of the house he lives in or whose account pays for the resort hotels he stays at every winter."Dante's chest heaved violently. His phone slipped from the edge of the desk, landing screen-up on the floor with a new text message popping up across the display. It was from Braden."Dante, Chief Hardy is actually yo

The morning handoff was scheduled for 8:00 am, but I arrived at 7:30 am.Someone was already in the office.Sofia was typing up chart notes at her computer. When she saw me walk in, her hand jerked, sending her mouse clattering to the floor."D-Dr. Carver."I ignored her, walking straight over to my desk.Dante's things were still taking up my spot.I set the cardboard box on the desk and began taking my things back out, piece by piece."Rowan," Dante's voice called out from behind me.I turned around. He stood in the doorway, his tone sharp with confrontation. "Who gave you permission to touch my stuff?""This is my desk," I replied coldly."But—""The computer you're using still has the startup password I set. Have you changed it? No, you haven't, because you can't. I'm the one with the admin rights."The rest of the staff began trickling in. They paused at the door, taking in the scene.Dante's expression flickered for a moment before settling back into a smirk. "Dr. C

Dante's smug smile froze on his face. He was utterly dumbfounded, his eyes darting between me and Chief Hardy. The other junior doctors traded bewildered looks. "What did he just call her?"Chief Hardy's lips parted as if to speak, but in the end, she merely frowned.I knew that look all too well.It was the exact same expression she'd worn my whole life whenever I let her down."Rowan," she finally said, her tone dripping with disappointment. "You are such a massive letdown."My chest tightened."Dante is your subordinate. Where is your grace as his mentor? First you throw a fit in the group chat, and now you're making a scene for the whole hospital to see? What on earth are you trying to do?"My voice sounded raspy, as though I were pushing every word out through a dry throat. "He reported me. He stole my research paper. He brought a mob to corner me in the hallway and force me to resign. And you're asking me what I'm trying to do?"Dante snapped out of his shock and took a
