Alejandro's pov.

“Now don't do anything stupid…” Samson said as he tucked me in bed, “especially calling that son of a bitch, you're only going to do yourself harm.”

“Yes mother…” I said jokingly to which Samson chuckled.

“You know I am just doing my best to keep you safe.” Samson said with worry etched on his face.

“I will be leaving and I'll drop by early in the morning to check on you before I head out to work. I'll lock the door from the outside, you can unlock it yourself tomorrow morning yourself

He turned off the light and closed the door behind him.

I slowly fell asleep as I heard his car driving away but I was jolted back up when I heard the door knob rattling.

“Samson?” I called out drowsily in the darkness, “did you forget something?”

There was no response.

I tried to remember if I ever heard him pulling back in my driveway but I guessed I must have been deep asleep to have noticed.

I walked out my room to the living room sleepy eyed, “did you forget something? You know you could have called me to come bring it to you tomorrow, I am not that far gone.” I said.

The silence that followed creeped me out, I could feel the presence of another in my house and this presence was not friendly.

“Who is that?” I asked as I grabbed an umbrella, “I have a weapon And I am not afraid to use it, show yourself.” I yelled.

Without warning the lights in my living room flicked on, blinding me in the process.

“What the fuck!” I cursed as I covered both eyes, “Samson this is not the right time for tricks.”

“So that's his name? Samson huh?”

My blood ran cold, I hated the fact that I had to face the looming reality sober.

The thickness of that voice sent chills down my spine and I could not help but hate myself that I recognised it.

I blinked severally to get my eyes accustomed to the darkness and….

“No way…you!”

“So you do remember me?”

Before me stood the man from the bar, “what are you doing here? What do you want from me? How did you get in here?”

“All these questions would be answered in due time, but I suggest we go slowly.”

I was not having any of this, “get out of my house this instant!” I warned “or I'll call the police”

He chuckled, “Now when did a little call to the police ever stop me?”

I was not going to take any chances,my cell phone was in my bedroom up the stairs.

The only hope I had now was the landline. I rushed towards it but my journey was cut short when I heard the sound of a gun clicking.

“Now I wouldn't do that if I were you.” He warned.

“What do you want from me?” I asked, my legs trembling in fear for my life.

“You,you're coming with me.” He answered, “Apparently you have history with my family, you're a troublesome one aren't you?” He asked.

“Your family?” I asked, bewildered. “That's absurd, I mean I just met you today, if you call our little altercation a meeting.”

“Now why don't we cut out this horrible joke and move on with our lives, for all I know you might have gotten the wrong person.”

“I mean, is this not way too much for just a glass of beer?” I asked.

“Shut up!!” He ordered.

Hell no, there was no way that we're doing that.

“There's no way you're yelling orders at me, you better shoot me.” I answered.

“I mean it! Shut up!”

I obeyed instantly and I heard the sound of engines outside my house.

“Finally, help!” I screamed.

“No! You're coming with me.” He yelled as he grabbed me forcefully and ran down the stairs.

“Get your hands off me!” I yelled as I resisted, he managed to get me to the fire escape and stopped, “either way you're going to die, you had better pick your poison.” He said.

“Now, you can come with me or you can stay here and risk dying, like I said, you're a troublemaker when it comes to my family, so which is it? Me or them?” He asked.

I looked back in the direction we were coming from and into his eyes.

Something about his dark green eyes made me weak. Not even the fury in those eyes could prevent me from seeing the soft caring crevices of his soul.

I already made my choice. He was my choice.

“Fine, I'll go with you, but I need to tell Samson…”

“Not now, not today, there is no one I can trust. Let's leave!”

…………..

He loosened the blindfold that blinded me And my eyes gently adjusted to the brilliance of the room.

“Not bad, I might as well get comfy here.” I said.

“Well we're not done yet, and this is not a vacation.”

“No joke,”I said as I raised my hands, showing the cuffs he placed me in.

“I mean,I see why you would kidnap me…” I teased.

He held my mouth, only to hear the sound of sirens around the house.

“They followed us here?” He asked in surprise.

“Of course, you kidnapped me, help! Help! I am over here.” I yelled.

“Shut the fuck up, you would get us killed.” He warned.

“Better the police than you..” I said as I kicked him in the balls.

I ran as fast as I could to the door but he tackled me to the ground.

“You're not listening to me, they are my police, you did not call the police remember? Isn't it convenient that they followed us to your house and now to mine?”

This made no sense to me.

“Get up!” He grunted as he pulled me to the closest.

He punched certain numbers in a secret key lock and a door opened, “Get In!” He ordered.

I stood still.

“I said get in!”

With that, he shoved me into the closet and joined me.

The secret door had barely closed when the door to the bedroom burst open with a loud bang.

  • Reporting from the underworld   Blood in Paradise. chapter twenty seven

Alejandro’s POVThe message glowed between us.“Wrong target tonight.”Miguel stared at the screen for exactly three seconds before locking it.His face went completely blank.“That was meant for you,” I said quietly.“Yes.”The calm in his voice unsettled me more than panic would have.Security radios continued crackling outside the suite. Footsteps. Urgent whispers in Portuguese. The sound of controlled chaos.Miguel moved toward the door.“Where are you going?” I demanded.“To fix it.”“You mean retaliate.”He didn’t deny it.I stepped in front of him.“If they were aiming at you, don't you think it would be wise to stay put?”He didn't respond, the look in his eyes answered.“ this isn’t about me, is it?”“It is always about you,” he replied. The intensity of it made my breath hitch.“You are leverage. That hasn’t changed.”“Then stop running head first into danger.”His eyes darkened.“You think I’m afraid of dying?”“No,” I said honestly. “I think you’re afraid of living.”That

  • Reporting from the underworld   Private Collision. chapter twenty six

Alejandro’s POV I did not sleep, I couldn't. Miguel pretended to. We shared the same suite — because of course we did. Two bedrooms connected by a sitting area no one would use. Security outside. Ocean view beyond the glass walls. This vacation was now wrapped around danger. I stood at the balcony at two in the morning, staring down at the city lights. Brazil at night was softer. Less loud. The ocean moved like something ancient and patient. Behind me, I heard his bedroom door open. His footsteps were steady as they inched towards me. He stopped a few feet behind me. “You are sure you heard them clearly?” he asked. “Yes.” I muttered weakly, my back still turned to him. “Describe them.” I did. Height. Accents. Suits. The tone of their voices. The certainty. He absorbed every detail. “Journalist,” he repeated under his breath. I turned slowly. “They know who I am.” “They knew before you arrived.” “Well I did not think I would be in this mess, heck. Home would have bee

  • Reporting from the underworld   The Public Game. chapter twenty five

Alejandro’s POVBrazil was loud. Not in the chaotic, suffocating way of gunfire and screeching tires. Not in the way betrayal echoed through marble halls.Brazil was alive. My ears opened before my eyes as music bled from the open windows, The air smelled like citrus, salt, and heat and smoked meat.“Good morning—” I muttered to no one in particular. I was all alone in my side of the room. I looked at the adjoining foot and imagined Miguel standing at the other side, waiting for me.“No.” I said, “he made his choice and I have to respect that.” That was close. For a brief moment, I almost forgot why I was here and the events that led here.Almost.The bath was heavenly. Miguel's father was not a cheap man, that much was clear. The decor of the room might have gone unnoticed when I arrived but now that I was settled? Whoa!I got dressed and I looked the part. Nothing too dark, nothing to fancy at least not with what I picked. I planned to hit the beach so I dressed in a cute beach

  • Reporting from the underworld   Nothing but co-workers. chapter twenty four

Miguel's POV.This was the day I left for Brazil. I anticipated this for a while because it allowed me to get my mind off things.I got into the designated plane for the trip. It was a private flight and I expected solitude throughout the entire trip.I got into the plane and there he was, seated in the window seat, headphones in,eyes closed.I felt my heart skip a beat. “What is he doing here?”I took the seat beside him.He did not acknowledge meBesides me was the perfect portrait of indifference.I muttered a faint greeting just to make my presence and hopefully start a conversation with him but he was mute. That stung but I took it like a champ. The plane taxied. Lifted and the city shrank beneath us.Hours passed.I tried to distract myself, read, listen to music, and sleep. They all failed. My mind kept replaying his face when he said, “is that all you have to say?” It wasn’t all I had to say but I did not know how to say the rest without breaking his heart any further.Turbu

  • Reporting from the underworld   Out of sight. chapter 23

Miguel's POV The entire drive back home was an antsy one. I wasn't sure if Alejandro got the letter I left.I wished that he did, the regret was beginning to set in and I began to imagine a day without him in it.I have lived for long without him and now that I had him, it felt strange to be without him.“What if he has seen the letter?” I asked myself as we stopped at a red light. “Would he still respond the other way he did?” My heart was heavy with guilt as I thought about his innocence. I tried to exonerate myself, “I was just trying to keep him safe. Perhaps he understood that from the letter.”I nodded as I stared into the street from my tinted window glass. “Perhaps he did— or?” The only other options shook me with fear. I had never been afraid before, not even with a bullet placed in front of my head. Father had ensured that we killed whatever part of us responsible for fear, but here I was, scared to my depths. This fear was linked to one question, “what if he felt nothing

  • Reporting from the underworld   No tears left to cry. chapter twenty two

Alejandro's POV I rolled my eyes as I dropped the phone.Pedro walked in on me talking into the house phone and he was not having it. He went on and on about how I wasn't supposed to do that. “I told you that the master is in a meeting. What part of that did you not understand?”“I heard you, did it occur to you that he might have called?” I said with one brow raised, “perhaps he had a feeling that you would bother me and he called to check up on me.”“There's no way he would do that?”“Well I for sure did not call him, I don't have his number remember? You refused to give them to me when I asked.” I knew that was a lie but I was sticking to it. It was extremely easy to find his number on that phone. A quick search of the word “master” and I had him on speed dial.Pedro stared at me deeply like he intended to dig the truth out of me with his eyes— it would be easier for a camel to walk through the camel's eye before he succeeded. He gave up a few moments later, “next time, I answe
