"Malachi!" I thundered, my voice booming with authority.
Upon returning to the house, I sensed that something was amiss. Kaida was not in the sitting room where I had expected her to be waiting for me, nor was she in her room. I knew she would have questions regarding the contract, which was open to negotiation, as I had only amended it prior to mailing it to her address earlier that morning.
I wanted to experience more of that fiery spark she possessed. I had deliberately goaded her with the absurd contract to gauge her reaction to it. Kaida didn't strike me as someone who would easily back down; otherwise, I would have assumed she had abandoned the endeavor, knowing she couldn't cope with my demands.
The contract was merely a ruse, a farce designed to test her resolve. Aware that she was my mate, I was determined to ensure her well-being. There was no way I would permit her to exhaust herself. We could commence with a façade, but I would guarantee she wouldn't suffer under my roof until I could make her understand the actual basis of her presence here. I needed her for an assignment more significant than mere house help.
My lovely mate didn't perceive me in a favorable light. I could tell she harbored animosity toward me and my brothers, given her encounter with Kai months ago. Kai wasn't pleased with her either, but he would learn to accept her over time. Kaida was mine, and she was here to stay, regardless of his sentiments.
I was well aware that Kaida would rather be anywhere but here, but this was the cosmos at work, orchestrating our paths to converge. My burden had finally reached its limit, and I was poised to be relieved of the weight I had shouldered for years.
All that remained was convincing Kaida to support my cause. She was a crucial element in the solution I had been seeking for decades. I had to keep her; I couldn't lose her.
I was alerted by the sound of someone's whimper as I closed the door to her room, and I knew at once who it was.
"Kaida." My entire body bristled, and my blood ran cold. I rushed toward the direction from which the sound had come, my heart racing into my throat at the sight unfolding before me.
"Malachi," I roared this time, consumed by horror at how close my mate was to departing from this world.
My bellow seemed to fall on deaf ears, as my brother was currently not in his right mind. I charged toward Kai before things escalated further. However, Kai flung Kaida aside to brace himself for my attack.
Kaida's limp body thudded hard against the ground, bones cracking from the rough impact, and my rage intensified. My anger boiled over.
Kai grunted as my body collided with his, the impact disrupting his balance and sending him flying across the room. He dug his claws into the floor to halt his movement, leaving claw marks etched into the surface. Assuming a low, hunched posture, he tensed his muscles and prepared to attack, his eyes fixed intently on me. His fangs were bared as he snarled, his green eyes blazing with preternatural intensity.
I didn't want to hurt him, but I knew he couldn't be restrained otherwise. "Stand down!" I growled, my words infused with the authority of an elder alpha.
Kai snarled back at me, indicating he wouldn't submit to my control without a fight.
I unsheathed my claws, my body tensing in preparation to shift into my wolf form and restrain Malachi. I sensed Asher's arrival just in time. "Get her out of here," I spat, without turning to face him.
Asher sprang into action, kneeling on one knee beside Kaida's body and taking a moment to check her pulse. His expression conveyed the gravity of the situation - her condition was dire.
I let out a chilling howl, a mix of pure agony and fury, as Asher whirled out of sight with Kaida in his arms. The moment Kaida was out of the way, both Malachi and I morphed into our wolf forms and charged at each other.
The battle raged on, our bodies locked in a frenzied clash of claws and teeth. Adrenaline coursed through my veins like liquid fire, fueling my movements as I exchanged blows with Kai.
His eyes blazed with a feral intensity, his rage and darkness unleashed like a tempest. Our snarls and growls reverberated through the air, the sound waves crashing against the walls as we shredded the hallway with our ferocity.
I felt his flesh tear beneath my claws, and Kai's anguished howl pierced the air as I landed a critical blow, his vulnerability momentarily exposed. Seizing the opening, I pinned him down, my jaws clamped around his throat, and for a moment, our eyes locked in a fierce, primal stare.
Then, with a final surge of power, I asserted my dominance, and Kai's body went limp beneath me. I stood over him, panting, my chest heaving with exertion.
Kai's head lolled back, his body transforming back into his human form under my paw. His injured side was a mess, blood welling up from the gashes on his ribcage. He groaned when I pawed him there, while I transformed into my human form as well, and he clenched his jaw against the pain.
Both of us were stark naked, our clothes long shredded and scattered across the hallway during the chaos.
Kai lay supine on the floor, his eyes shut. I was accustomed to this behavior from him whenever he lost control.
I gazed down at him, a mixture of anger and concern warring within me. I knew his darkness, his demons; I had been lenient for far too long, attributing his outbursts to the metaphysical forces that plagued us. But this time, he had crossed a line. Kaida was my mate, my everything – I would not let Kai's lack of control take her from me.
Leaving him lying there, I turned away, my heart racing with a new fear. I had to find Kaida, to know if she still lived. The thought of losing her was unbearable, a prospect I couldn't contemplate. I offered a silent, fervent prayer, hoping against hope that she would survive.
Forget the legal repercussions we would face should she not survive; I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I hadn't been able to protect my mate, the one I had finally found after endless years of waiting.
There might be no second chance after Kaida, and I didn't want a second chance after her – I wanted her, and only her.
Caspian Asher and I rushed to Kaida's room at the sound of her shrill scream, alarm bells sounding in my head at the thought that she might be in peril. Questions swirled within my mind as I sprinted toward her room at a blinding pace, my heart pounding in my chest.I forced my way into her room, slamming my shoulder against the door with a loud crack. The door burst open, swinging wildly on its hinges. I stormed into the room, Asher close behind, our eyes scanning the space for any indication of danger.Kaida released a shocked gasp at our abrupt entry, taking a step backward. Her eyes widened, her mouth agape. My gaze settled upon her, and I ascertained that everything was in order.I scrutinized her form, considering the possibility that she might have inflicted harm upon herself, but I was unprepared for the spectacle I beheld. My throat constricted, my mind momentarily short-circuiting at the sight of Kaida's provocative nightdress. It was a black, silky garment with delicate sp
Caspian "When are you going to inform her?" Asher inquired upon my return to the house.I had been away from home all day, occupied with business meetings and resolving familial matters.I was considerably fatigued upon my return, only inquiring about Kaida's well-being before collapsing onto the nearest couch.Asher offered me a glass of chilled water, posing his question to me."What?" I responded, not immediately comprehending the basis of his inquiry."Kaida? When will you reveal the truth to her? She is becoming suspicious." He seated himself on the chair opposite mine. "Indeed, you have been bestowing upon her preferential treatment exceeding the bounds of her job description. She is bound to become inquisitive."I rubbed my palm across my face, sitting upright. "She will be apprised when the appropriate time arrives. I cannot simply unload the information upon her. She would flee.""She might not. If you are, in fact, fated, she will be unable to resist the connection.""Trust
KaidaAsher re-entered the dining area after I finished eating, offering to do the dishes.I scoffed. "Please. I am perfectly capable of handling that task.""No, I insist. You should rest while your meal digests."I shook my head, suppressing a smile of amusement. "You realize you don't need to go to such lengths on my account. I understand you feel guilty about your brother's actions, but this is becoming excessive. You have already apologized.""This is not solely about an apology. I am doing this because I desire to."I made a face, pursing my lips. "I doubt you treated your previous domestic help in this manner.""What leads you to believe I did not?" Asher replied, and I promptly bit my lip.I had overestimated my worth, experiencing a tinge of embarrassment at my words."Alright," I said slowly, articulating each syllable deliberately. "However, I am not comfortable with another person cleaning up after me. Washing dishes has always been my forte." Or, rather, my method of expr
Kaida"Kaida!" Meredith exclaimed when the call connected. "Where have you been? I was worried sick." "I'm sorry. I was busy last night." "I was thinking of going to the police station if I didn't hear from you again by nightfall. You couldn't be that busy." "I know. You know that I'm just adjusting to how things are done around here. There's a lot to learn and catch up on.""How is it going? Is it that stressful?" Meredith asked, her voice etched with concern.I rubbed the side of my neck, where Kai's hand had held me in a chokehold the previous morning. That bastard. "Kaida? Kaida, are you there?" I snapped back to focus. "Yes, I am. Just got carried away." "Are you at work now?" "I'm about to be. I was immensely occupied last night. I'm taking a moment to catch my breath.""And they allowed it?" Meredith sounded skeptical, her perspective still shaped by the rumors about the Ragnars, despite having encouraged me to apply for the job. "It's either they want me to end up dead
Kaida"What are you doing?" I demanded, cocking my head to one side as I addressed Caspian. He barricaded the entrance with his body, blocking my path. I shifted to another side, and he mirrored my movement, still obstructing me. I muttered a sharp curse under my breath, yanking at my hair in frustration. "What do you want from me? I've quit. What part of that don't you understand?" I yelled, striking the inside of my palm with the side of my fist. "I was nearly killed less than twenty-four hours since I arrived under your roof." I paused, a sudden realization dawning on me, and gasped. "Oh God." I suspected I had walked myself into a precarious situation. My phone. I needed to get my stuff and leave immediately. I turned away from Caspian, scanning the room, but my phone and bag were nowhere to be seen. I spun back, demanding harshly, "Where are they?" Caspian feigned innocence, responding with a simple "What?" I glared at him. "My bag and phone. Where did you put them?" "They
Caspian I yearned to spend the night at Kaida's bedside, but such an action would have raised unnecessary questions. After all, she was purportedly the wife of one of my employees. My excessive display of concern would have been scrutinized by William, who I suspected had not entirely bought into my narrative regarding Kaida's relationship to my employee. William's perceptive nature made him a formidable individual, but since he chose not to press the matter, I opted to maintain my facade. As the first light of dawn crept over the horizon, I arose from my slumber, engaged in a rigorous exercise routine, and then attended to my personal grooming, donning a fresh set of attire. I subsequently checked in on Kai to determine if he had returned home the previous evening. My knocks went unanswered, prompting me to open the door and enter his room, surveying the dimly lit space. A deep sigh escaped my lips as I beheld the shattered windowpane. It appeared that Kai had succumbed to his in
