Chapter 4

Author: wowo
The next morning, I ran all the way to the hospital. Despite my body being covered in horrific wounds, I was still smiling.

It was the first time I had smiled in three years. After all, Marco would be waking up soon. As long as he woke up, the humiliation I had endured over the past three years would all be worth it.

Holding onto my last hope, I shoved open the hospital room door, but his bed was empty. The tubes that had been connected to several machines had already been unplugged and carelessly piled on the bedside table. Even the bedsheets were gone.

My breath hitched as I turned to grab a nurse walking past me. "Where's my brother? Where's the patient in this room? Has he been transferred to a better ward?"

The nurse stopped. Her eyes were full of pity. "Ms. Rossi, I'm so sorry for your loss. Your brother suddenly suffered multiple organ failure at six in the morning.

"They tried to resuscitate him for 40 minutes… but it was too late. They just sent his body to the morgue. You should see him one last time."

A deafening roar filled my mind, as if something within me had exploded.

"That's impossible! That can't be!"

I shoved the nurse aside and dashed for the elevator like a madwoman. "That's impossible! I already got the money!

"The neurological team from Sylora is already on its way. Why didn't he wait a while longer?"

The morgue was located on the second basement level. As I sprinted inside, the doctor was just about to cover Marco's body on the hospital bed with a white sheet.

"Don't touch him!" I rushed over, shoved the doctor aside, and clung tightly to my brother's bony body. He was already cold to the touch.

"Marco, I'm sorry it took me so long… I'm sorry… I'm so sorry…" I collapsed to the ground, burying my face in the crook of his neck and crying as if my heart had been torn apart.

The doctor sighed. "After he fell into a coma, his bodily functions had already begun to shut down. My condolences, Ms. Ricci."

Just as I was consumed by despair, the morgue door was pushed open, and a nurse poked her head inside. "Ms. Isabella Ricci, right? A man's waiting to speak to you outside."

I numbly looked up and saw a man in a black suit standing in the corridor. He had a piercing gaze and deep, defined features, and he came across as both gentlemanly and a killer.

"Ms. Isabella Ricci, right? Someone asked me to pass on a message."

The man paused before continuing in a low voice, "Today, I'm here to tell you something about your brother, Marco Rossi. It's about the abduction case from back then."

He pulled a brown paper envelope from his briefcase. "Your brother didn't just stand by back then. When he learned that Rachel Vitale had been abducted, he immediately rushed over to save her.

"He was alone and unarmed, yet he still took on four attackers wielding steel pipes. He clung tightly to one of the thugs' legs, giving poor Rachel a few precious minutes to escape. However, Marco himself had over a dozen bones broken."

My legs gave out, and I collapsed onto the floor. My back was pressed against the wall. "What… What did you just say?"

The man snapped his folder shut and got to his feet. "The Vitales thought your brother stood by and did nothing to help Rachel.

"The truth is, he was no coward. He risked his life to save Rachel during her abduction. The Vitales have always been wrong about him."

A heavy silence fell over the entire morgue. At that moment, a sharp clang rang out from the doorway, and I turned around stiffly.

I had no idea how long Enzo had been standing outside the morgue. His eyes were fixed on Marco's body on the hospital bed before he turned to the man.

Enzo pointed at the envelope. His lips quivered as he asked, "You… What did you just say?"

I headed for the public cemetery. There, before Marco's grave, lay a bouquet of daisies that still had morning dew on them. Beside it was the pearl hair clip. The pearls had been restrung, with the two broken ones replaced by new pearls. Upon closer inspection, the shade and glimmer of the new pearls were slightly different from the old ones, reminiscent of a scar left behind after a wound healed.Leaning over, I picked up the hair clip and slipped it into my coat pocket. Then, I sat down and leaned against the cold gravestone, shutting my eyes.A gentle breeze whistled through the trees, causing a few withered leaves to flutter to the ground.I spent the entire afternoon sitting there. When night finally fell, I stood up and dusted off the bottom of my skirt.Stroking the photo on the gravestone, I murmured, "I'm leaving, Marco. The next time I come, I'll be sure to bring your favorite tiramisu along. I'm going to make it myself, so no complaining, okay?"With that, I turned a

The next morning, the Moretti family's butler discovered the body.Immediately, a war threatened to break out between the Vitale and Moretti families. However, the committee members of the two families stepped in to intervene. They reviewed the evidence Enzo submitted, which included records of Camilla paying the caretaker, tampering with the surveillance footage, and framing Luca. The conclusion they arrived at was that Camilla had gone against the most basic principles of the mafia—murdering an innocent and framing a member of the family. It was decided that her death would be dealt with internally. Besides that, the Moretti family was ordered to pay a hefty compensation to the Vitale family, as well as turn over control of three dockside shipping routes. As for Enzo, the committee gave him a choice: either stand trial before the family, or disappear quietly with his dignity intact.Enzo chose the latter.Three days later, he was sent to a manor in Saracules.…One week late

One month later, the Moretti family's murder-for-hire case went to trial. As the victim's family, I was sitting in the last row of the court gallery. The case proceeded in a heated manner as Camilla had spared no expense in hiring the best legal team in the country, just as she had arrogantly claimed would happen that night one month ago.Her lawyer pushed all the blame onto her chauffeur, an elderly man with cancer who was willing to become the scapegoat for money. As for Camilla herself, he painted her as an unsuspecting, helpless victim. The caretaker also changed her tune right there in court, insisting that it was Camilla's chauffeur who had given her the orders, so Camilla had nothing to do with any of it.With the striking of the gavel, the judge announced his verdict. "As the primary evidence came from a recanting witness and the mastermind has proven to be someone else, the murder charge against Camilla Moretti is dismissed. "Due to insufficient evidence, the charges of

That day, I moved into an old basement at Brookville.Every morning, a piping hot breakfast and a bouquet of white daisies would appear outside the rundown steel door of that basement. It didn't take a genius to figure out who had left them.On the evening of the third day, Vincenzo knocked on my door. This time, he was dressed in casual clothes, and he had come with several boxes of supplements."Isabella, you've thoroughly worn out your body in the past few years, so you should take these supplements."As he noted my pallid complexion, a hint of pity and heartache flashed across his eyes."Once this case with the Morettis is over, I'll help you apply for compensation as the victim's family. Or perhaps… If you're willing, I can help you move to a different city and start over."I leaned against the doorway, not moving to accept the items he offered me."Vincenzo, you've already accomplished your mission, so there's no need for you to waste any more time and effort on my issues

One hour later, I kicked open the door to a private room in one of Marola's high-end clubs.Camilla was lounging back on a genuine leather couch with a glass of champagne in her hand. Her body was shaking with laughter as she chatted with the daughters from several other families.I charged over without hesitation and seized her carefully-styled blonde hair."You killed him! You bought off that caretaker!"Camilla yelped at the pain of me tugging on her hair roots. The champagne spilled all over her expensive tailor-made dress. However, not only did she not panic, but she even gestured for the bodyguards to stand down."Don't you know that one shouldn't say such nonsense?" Camilla sneered at me, the smug look in her eyes utterly revolting. "Do you have proof that I bought off that caretaker? She's just a crazy woman. What does that have to do with me?"My whole body shook with anger as I wrapped my hand around her neck and squeezed tightly."Stop with the innocent act! Since yo

Three days later, at the public cemetery on the outskirts of town.A chilly rain fell from the sky, battering against the old windbreaker I wore as I stood silently before Marco's grave. The photo on his gravestone was of him smiling brilliantly. It had been taken three months before everything changed. He was clad in his favorite leather jacket, his eyes shining with hope for the future.Lifting a hand, I ran my fingers across the cold stone of his grave. There was a yawning emptiness in my chest, as though something had been dug out. I couldn't even feel the pain anymore. For the last three years, I had climbed into countless men's beds or given them a strip dance. I had worn a dog collar while crawling in a cage, allowing them to burn me with their cigars or throw cash in my face. All the humiliating and degrading things I had endured with gritted teeth were for the sake of accumulating enough money to pay for that exorbitant medical bill, so that Marco would open his eyes and
