MasukThe place she once considered hers, the halls that screamed of security, turned alien after one incident.
Esperanza's walk was steady. Too firm, too measured to be considered a human walk. She may have looked like a petite girl with tear stains barely dry on her face, but her controlled movements to the first floor predicted the life she was about to live: stoic and impassive. There was no unconscious swing to her arms, no rise in her chest as if she wasn't breathing. She moved like a machine, covering every step with the exact distance as the previous one. Reaching her room, she found no memory flashing in her head that could tell her she had once been loved, but only reminded her of the betrayal she had been living with for months. Or maybe… Years. She grabbed her ivory duffel bag, gifted by her mother, and stuffed it with a few essentials that she would need to survive. Money, shoes, clothes, and a few picture frames that reminded her of her mother. After all, she was the only one who loved her unconditionally. "I wish you hadn't left. Or... Maybe told me that except for yours, everyone's love will come with a price that I have to pay." Her eyes were stuck on the face of the woman who told her what love was, unable to understand why her father couldn't love her the way her mother did. Without glancing at anything else, she walked straight out of her room, directly to the entrance of the house which was her exit from hell for once and all. "Mark my words, Esperanza, if you leave, you'll never be allowed back in this house and you will not get a single penny from me." Her father calls after her, but she doesn't look back. "As if this house and money ever belonged to you in the first place," She bitterly chuckled and left. Standing on the street with nowhere to go, she realised she had to find work and a place to stay. With her small savings and no family support, she must start completely from scratch. A life where she was only Esperanza, not someone's wife or daughter. **************************** After spending six days in a hotel, she finds herself in a neighbourhood, looking for ways to pass the days and for employment. She'd already spent six days looking for a decent apartment in her budget, and her savings were already flowing like water. The sun was setting as she walked down an unfamiliar street, exhausted and discouraged. Her feet hurt from walking all day, and desperation has begun to set in. If she didn't find a job soon, she would not be able to fix the scars that had been imprinted on her heart. Seeking a job at some company wasn't an option, everyone knew she was Carlos Mendoza's wife and Don Ricardo's daughter. And by now, Juliana and Evangelina must have spread words about her that were never true. Her eyes searched through the crowd of restaurants, cafes, hoping she would find at least one decent place to start with. Her eyes found a "Help wanted" sign glowing on the window under the sun's rays and she approached it with a hope lingering in the back of her heart. As soon as she reached the door, a tall, well-dressed man with an expensive watch and confident demeanour exited the establishment. Something about him seemed familiar, though she couldn't place where she might have seen him. The man's eyes widened with recognition, "Well, well... if it isn't the famous Carlos Mendoza's wife. What brings the senora to this part of town?" Esperanza felt heat rising to her cheeks, both from embarrassment and anger. "Ex-wife," she corrects sharply. "I'm his ex-wife." The man raises an eyebrow, clearly intrigued by this information, "Ex-wife? How interesting. The business circles were all talking about the Mendoza heir's marriage to the wealthy heiress. What happened to the fairy tale?" His mocking yet curious tone broke Esperanza's control. She was already worn out and humiliated from the whole day of job-hunting and his description of her fairytale life brought a need upon her where she found herself spilling the beans before realising it. She bitterly laughed, "A fairy tale? There was no fairy tale. I wasn't loved, I was played for a fool. Carlos only married me to get his hands on my mother's inheritance. And his precious girlfriend, Juliana? She was the one pulling all the strings." As words poured out of Esperanza's mouth with her voice growing heavier and emotional, the man found himself more invested in the story. She was talking about things that people didn't know. And things like these always come in handy in a world where they live. Tears streamed down her face, but she couldn't bring herself to stop, "I signed divorce papers just to see my son's face on a video call for thirty seconds. That's all I got! Thirty seconds with my own child before they threw me out with nothing! Juliana didn't want to ruin her figure by getting pregnant, so they used me like a... like a breeding animal. They took my baby from me the moment he was born!" The man studied her with a mixture of sympathy and calculation, understanding the strong build of the Mendoza empire. "So the great Carlos Mendoza's empire was built on lies and stolen inheritance. And you're here now, looking for a job and a place to live." As realisation drew upon her, Esperanza quickly wiped her face and turned her head away, "I shouldn't have said all that. I don't even know who you are." The man brought his hand forward with a slight smile on his face, "My name is Rafael Montenegro. And I think, senora, that we might be able to help each other. I have some business dealings with the Mendoza family that haven't gone as planned. Your story gives me a very different perspective on Carlos's recent... acquisitions." Esperanza eyed him with deep suspicion, "What do you mean?" "I mean that a woman who's been wronged the way you have might be interested in ensuring that justice is served. And I might be able to help you rebuild your life in the process." 'A... Revenge...?' Esperanza thought. She wants to get back at him, bring her son back to her, and live with dignity again but wasn't trusting a stranger risky? This was the first stroke of luck she'd had since her world fell apart. But she had learned to be cautious about trusting anyone, especially men who seemed too good to be true. "I need to think about it," she carefully answered. Rafael nodded and pulled out an elegant business card from his pocket, "Of course. When you're ready to reclaim what was stolen from you, your dignity, your child, your inheritance... Call me." As Rafael walked to his lavish car and vanished in the busyness of the city, Esperanza clutched the business card. Was this stranger the key to rebuilding her life, or just one more person planning to use her?~Diego's POV~ "So...?" "Have you ever signed papers without reading when you were with..." I took a pause. I didn't want him to address him as her ex-husband. He wasn't worth being related to her in any way. "With Mendoza..." "A lot..." She said, a heavy sigh coming out of her mouth. "Then I'm sure he has worse things than these..." I held back the urge to curse. Only God knows how ugly this all will get till we get our hands on Asher and all the proofs against them. I showed her the papers that have been circulated all over the internet. Even if Mendoza never loved her, he knew Esperanza was capable. Capable of sorting her life and getting all the pieces together. And he wanted to make sure it never happened. That's why he chose to build lies when he trusted him the most. He had some medical papers hidden up his sleeves that stated Esperanza wasn't mentally stable. Stating that for the past three years, she was on high doses of medication to be able t
~Diego's POV~ The news has been spreading like wildfire. And I didn't understand how. The news of Esperanza being the new CEO wasn't out yet then how come Juliana knew about it? Nothing was adding up except for one thing and I swear to God if this turned out to be true, I'm going to ruin more lives than I planned. I didn't expect my employees to turn against me. And if they did, they were going to pay for it. My phone was ringing continuously. My assistant, manager, even Trustees... All of them were hot on their heels. Demanding answers that I myself hadn't. But I know all of this is fake. She isn't what Juliana mentioned. Not even a bit of it. I swear, once I get proof against Mendoza, I'll strip him naked in front of the whole world. He attacked Esperanza in a way that could ruin her completely. She has come a long way... Healed herself in ways that made her cry until she was out of breath. I can't let people play with her sanity again. She isn't alone th
~Esperanza's POV~I was missing him. More than I thought I would. Maybe it was the effect of always being around him. I didn't know it until today, but I've developed a habit of being in touch with him. Talk to him whenever I wanted. Meet him whenever I wanted. But I haven't heard his voice for the past two days. He just texted me once a day. Reminding me that he remembers I'm there in his life. And... Somehow it feels incomplete. I wanted to go back to my place but Grandpa asked me to stay. The house just looks like bricks and decorations to him in Diego's absence so he wanted me to stay till he comes back. Though he has already discussed the closest dates of our wedding, I couldn't agree with his plans. I don't want it to be a grand, fat wedding with hundreds of guests, but I can't seem to find the best excuse to decline his dream politely. This is my second wedding, but his grandson's first. And last. And this time it wasn't me making up stories in m
~Juliana's POV~ I thought the bitch would die right after being thrown on the streets, but she found another bed to warm. I told Carlos to put an end to her life so she wouldn't become a threat to us, but he didn't listen. Neither did Evangelina. They both thought it would be great to see her suffer. The same way Evangelina suffered for years while she received all the princess treatment. But gosh! How do I keep her in control now? That Rowland brat is making her do things that I thought she would never be able to do in this lifetime. And now, she was getting on my nerves. I already had enough of her crybaby ruining my nights. The least I could expect was to be at peace, seeing her shedding tears in slums while I enjoyed every single penny that she wasted like it was nothing. My blood kept boiling, my nails kept digging into my flesh. If I don't stop her right here, she'll soon take away everything from me. I worked so hard to be where I am today;
~Third Person's POV~ Using Diego's closet in his absence felt like an invasion. Esperanza took her new brown tailored formal suit that fit her like a dream and walked to the room where she was staying in her newfound home. The changes were new and big. And for both, she wasn't prepared. But she knew she couldn't delay any of them. One would silence the world's questions about her character, and the other would bring her back to the world that belonged to her once. Pairing her attire with black stiletto heels, she applied a nude brown lipstick and kept her light brown hair straight in a side partition. The sleek look gives her the inner confidence and calm that the outer fails to provide. It wasn't loud. But enough to make her push the boundaries that people in her past created around her. "All the best, my child," Mr Rowland gave her his blessing. A soft smile on his face, "They'll ask you questions which will make you doubt yourself, but..." His e
~Esperanza's POV~ I felt betrayed... I was a fool to feel that way, but... Yeah... I was being a fool. Somewhere along the way, I had convinced myself that I knew him. Not personally, maybe. But professionally, at least. We worked together. We spoke. We planned. We trusted each other in silence. Or so I thought. But the way he left without meeting, without talking... It kind of gave me the cold realization that the 'everything' we had was actually nothing at all. He knew all about me. Whether I told him or he found out on his own, he knew it all. My past. My failures. My scars. Whereas I only knew about his family. Not the shadows he has been fighting. Not the pain he has buried deep inside him. There's something. Maybe a lot... But I'm not aware of any of it. My eyes fell on Mr Rowland. If anyone could tell me the truth about Diego, it would be him. But I didn’t want answers filtered through love or protection. I wanted Diego to tell me h
