Chapter 5

Auteur: Tangle H
Adrian stared at me, those gray-brown eyes cold enough to frighten, like he wanted to swallow me whole.

What I'd said must have dragged him back to before. How he'd betrayed his family, given up everything for me, and how I'd thrown him away for the measly million his father handed me.

He would never understand how he could have lost to that million.

My stomach was churning, agony rolling through it. I didn't want to say anything more. I turned to go, and then the ground dropped away under my feet, and the next second Adrian had thrown me over his broad shoulder.

Like some thug who wouldn't hear a word of reason, face cold, he carried me straight out of the underground bar.

Everyone stared, shocked. I fought and struggled, telling him to put me down.

He clamped my hands tight and pressed down on the cut on my wrist, snarling at me. "Eve, you must be a demon God sent to torment me."

"You're a demon. You stole my soul."

He threw me into that black Cullinan, leaned over to pin my legs, gripped my face, and cursed viciously. "Sometimes I really want to put a bullet in you."

His expression said he hated me to the bone.

But his eyes always seemed to be telling me he still loved me.

My stomach hurt too much to speak. Cold sweat beaded on my forehead as I glared at him.

Adrian frowned, opened the glove box, dug out a bottle of stomach medicine, shook out two pills, and pushed them into my mouth.

At the very back of that glove box I saw the cheap perfume bottle I'd emptied years ago and couldn't bear to throw out, a hair tie gone frayed and white at the edges, and the worthless little silver pendant Adrian had bought me five years back...

Everything of mine was hidden in there. In the five years I was gone, it had kept this young Don company through countless bloody nights in my place.

Tears spilled out of me. I turned my head fast and wiped them away before Adrian could see.

All these years, and he still remembered my stomach was bad.

Even with me gone, this cold-blooded mafia boss still kept painkillers in his car out of habit.

And I'd hardened my heart, and with everything I had, I shoved him away.

I forced myself to smile at him. "Don, stop chasing me, all right? The way you are now, it's repulsive."

"You probably don't even know. I got married a long time ago. My kid's already three..."

"Don't tell me you still want to patch things up with a woman covered in mud like me. Adrian, don't embarrass yourself."

I shoved him back two steps. His tall frame went rigid.

The instant I sat up to get out of the car, he lunged, pinned me hard against the leather seat, hand around my throat, voice shaking through his teeth. "Eve, I don't believe you."

"You'd better tell me you're joking."

I looked him dead in the eyes and said calmly, "Fine. I'll prove it to you."

I took Adrian to a run-down hospital.

The smell of disinfectant filled my nose.

I stood outside the dialysis room, and through the glass I pointed at the unconscious little boy inside, hooked up to a ventilator, and told Adrian, "That's my child."

His name was Damian. He was the last light I had in this world.

He was the only reason I was still alive, my one hope.

He was stubborn, just like Adrian.

He looked like me.

He'd inherited every good thing from both his parents.

He was such a good kid.

But he'd fallen ill, a boy not yet five, thin and small.

But his eyes stayed as innocent as a fawn's.

It broke your heart.

Adrian stared at that child for a long, long time, then clenched his fist and drove it into the glass of the room.

He dropped his head. This man who could summon storms was suddenly as broken as he'd been five years ago.

That night, the last thing Adrian said to me was this.

Eve, you've really got nerve.

From today, this cursed debt between us ends, once and for all.

I watched the last spark of light die in his eyes.

He didn't ask who the child's father was.

And he didn't recognize that the boy lying in that bed was his own flesh and blood.

Two years later, Adrian finally got what he wanted, and married me through the Vance family in full view of everyone.Just as the old Don had predicted, the elders opposed me, a woman from a wiped-out family, becoming Donna, same as ever. But Adrian fought for it, seized it, crushed every voice of dissent with an iron hand, and locked the absolute power of the whole family firmly in his own grip.Sometimes, watching him bristling with menace, sleeping with a gun in his hand, even I felt worn out on his behalf.I asked him if it was worth it.He held me tight and said, voice rough, of course it was.He only wanted to prove to me that he was the same as five years ago. That he'd still give everything for me, still give me anything I wanted, and still go to war with the whole world for my sake.He said he'd never changed.I looked into his stubborn, exhausted eyes and remembered before, when we were crammed into that tiny basement in the slums. We had nothing then, could have been killed

That day, I won a beautiful victory. The whole East Coast was buzzing about how heartless the Vances were, and about me, the woman who'd swallowed every humiliation to save Adrian. The old Don's authority collapsed fast. For his coldness toward his own blood, the old Don even drew the Commission's watchful eye.Enemies circling the family's holdings saw the crack and moved, all of them itching to carve into Vance assets.Within a week there were several bloody clashes.Adrian was run ragged. The family elders demanded, loudly, that they throw out the troublemaker splitting the family. Me.Adrian just smiled, and in front of every elder, said coldly, "So we lost a little money and a few venues. What of it? Under my father, your tolerance for pressure got embarrassingly thin.""And another thing. The one who betrayed this family was never Eve. It was my father.""Eve. I'm marrying her. That's final."Adrian truly didn't care.Moving against him now wasn't as simple as it had been five ye

Adrian called off the engagement with Charlotte. He used the full weight of the Vance name to crush the Whitmores' resistance. And to answer for it to the family, he seized three shipping routes single-handedly.All to marry me.I quit the underground bar, moved into the Vance estate, and came and went with Adrian openly, hiding nothing.Soon the East Coast gossip spread. They said Adrian had once loved me like his own life, nearly died for me, and I'd gotten pregnant and played him. They spun a story that I'd shaken the old Don down for a million dollars back then in exchange for keeping quiet. And then secretly given birth to the child. Now that Adrian was Don and about to be married, they said, I'd crawled back out to use the boy to threaten him.Everyone pitied Charlotte, said that she came from the Whitmore family, so beautiful, such a powerful background, that she was the one fit to be Donna. And me, a rat from a fallen house, a traitor before and a traitor forever. They knew I'd

That day, the doctors brought Damian back.He slipped into a deep coma, and no one could say when he'd wake.I sat there staring at him lying so still in the ICU bed, like he was only sleeping.Out of the corner of my eye, I caught Charlotte quietly smiling. She faked a sigh and scolded me, frowning. "Eve, if you'd told Adrian, told me the truth sooner, I'm not a petty person. I could have let the child through the Vance family's door, let him call me mother.""He never had to suffer this much. It's all because of your fake pride, and now you've nearly gotten him killed..."She must have thought she could finally rest easy.Damian was alive but might as well be gone, and between Adrian and me there was now a raw, bleeding wound that would never heal. She thought I'd never forgive Adrian. That in the end, the woman who married the Don and became Donna could only be her. She'd forgotten, maybe. Back then I gave Adrian up because I wanted a quiet life. But now, everyone in the underworld

I watched the resuscitation room doors slam shut and the red light come on. I sank to the floor and couldn't say a word.Adrian reached down to lift me up.I caught his hand and bit into it, hard, with everything I had.He didn't pull away. He just held still and let me take it out on him.Until I tasted blood, until I had no strength left, I finally broke and pushed him off.I staggered to my feet and asked him, desperate, "Adrian, why do you keep coming after me? I only wanted a clean goodbye. I was doing fine on my own..."He clenched his teeth and cut me off, eyes red, throwing it back at me. "You ask why I keep coming after you? You don't know? I've been out of my mind missing you!""You say you were doing fine? Begging people for money everywhere, dressing like that in an underground bar, ruining yourself, rotting in the mud. You call that fine?""You think I wanted to come find you? I just couldn't stand watching you hurt. You tell me what I was supposed to do.""Eve, you wronge

My back hit the wall, and I grunted at the pain.Damian must have heard. He ran out of the ward on bare little feet.He spread his arms and planted himself in front of me, glaring up at Adrian, refusing to let him touch me again.Adrian looked down at him, a cold smile tugging at his mouth, and said flatly, "You're just like your mother. Insufferable."I watched Damian's eyes slowly redden. That one line must have cut him to the core.Under his pillow he'd been secretly keeping a newspaper clipping of Adrian. He'd always known Adrian was his father.Through all those painful nights after he got sick, he'd fall asleep in my arms and dream his daddy had come home.He said the daddy in his dreams missed Damian so much.Just like Damian missed his daddy, always crying about it in secret. He said his daddy wasn't going to leave anymore, and wouldn't let Mommy work so hard at the underground bar ever again.Except then the dream would end, and Damian met his father for real.Only to hear him
