The Cracks Beneath the Calm

last update Last Updated: 2025-09-06 18:32:55

The lounge by the sea was painted in shades of serenity. Low couches, dressed in pale beige cushions, formed a loose circle that faced the endless stretch of water.

Lucas leaned back against the cushions, one hand curled lazily around a sweating glass of lemonade, his other arm stretched along the top of the couch.

Beside him, Liam was nursing a drink with a lime wedge floating near the rim, his posture far more composed but no less relaxed.

Lily had slipped off her sandals and tucked her legs beneath her, sipping from a cocktail that carried the bright tang of pineapple and rum.

Maya was laughing at something Aiden had said, her bracelets jingling softly whenever she gestured with her hand.

Graham sat with his arm draped casually over her shoulders, though his expression was one of quiet thought rather than laughter. Aiden was tipping back his drink as though the golden liquid was simply water.

The six of them looked almost like ordinary college friends enjoying a seaside break.

The resort’s common lounge opened into a wide expanse of open-air elegance. Glass walls slid apart to reveal the gentle sweep of the beach, where the tide lapped against golden sand in a rhythm almost too calm for the stormy undercurrents of wolf politics unfolding within.Guests lounged across wicker chairs draped in pale cushions, sipping colorful drinks that glittered in the late afternoon light. The scent of grilled seafood and coconut oils clung to the air, mixed with the faint smell of saltwater. The ceiling fans spun lazily, though the sea breeze did most of the work in keeping the space cool.Ethan was already there, sprawled with calculated ease on one of the resort’s cushioned loungers near the bar. His posture screamed confidence, as if he owned the place, his shirt unbuttoned just enough to show off sculpted muscles that caught a few curious glances from passing women. A glass of something dark and expensive sat in his hand, condensation dripping lazily down its side.

The sun had already begun its slow descent, dipping into the horizon and painting the ocean in golds and purples. The salty breeze carried with it the faint music from the resort’s beachside bar, a soft hum of laughter, clinking glasses, and the gentle crash of waves. After the chaos of the day, the defeat of the Crescent rogues, the confrontation with Clara, the world finally seemed still. Almost too still. The group had gathered in one of the lounge areas of the resort, a half-circle of cushioned seats facing the sea. For once, no one was standing guard. No one was running. It was a chance to breathe.Lucas leaned back, a tall glass of champagne in his hand, though his gaze was far away, his jaw tight. Beside him, Liam stretched out his legs, ever the picture of confidence but his eyes betrayed the storm underneath. Lily sat between the Alpha twins, her presence grounding them both, her hand brushing Lucas’s shoulder every so often as if to remind him he was still here, still w

The sun had dipped lower over the horizon, splashing the beach in strokes of fiery orange and muted violet. The waves rolled with lazy persistence, as though the ocean itself was indifferent to the storm that was about to break among the seven friends standing in the sand. Their laughter and relief from earlier had thinned into cautious silence as Clara, with her notepad pressed tightly against her chest, approached. Her heels sank awkwardly into the sand, every step stiff, but her chin was lifted high, her reporter’s resolve battling the tremor in her hands.“Lucas,” she called, her voice carrying across the wind, sharp but slightly breathless. “Liam. All of you.”The group stiffened. Lucas’s jaw locked while Liam’s arms folded tightly across his chest. Aiden and Graham exchanged a look, their faces darkening with recognition and distaste.Lily’s stomach twisted.Clara stopped just short of the group, shifting her weight nervously. “Is it true?” she demanded. “Did you actually cat

The salty breeze carried the muffled groans of the bound Crescent rogues as they were dragged across the sand by the resort’s security team. Two of the rogues stumbled, their legs weak, but the guards yanked them upright with no sympathy. At a distance, the Alpha twins’ bodyguards stood locked in conversation with the head of resort security. Their voices were low but urgent. Every so often, one of them glanced toward the rogues, ensuring no trick or sudden escape attempt would mar this victory. The rest of the group—Lily, Maya, Lena, Aiden, Lucas, Liam, and Graham—stood together in a loose circle on the sand. The tension of battle was still clinging to their skin, but relief had started to seep into their shoulders. Their laughter came in short bursts, like nervous fireworks after a storm.“I still can’t believe we pulled that off,” Graham said, running a hand through his messy hair. His shirt clung to his back, stained with both sweat and dirt.Lena grinned, brushing a lock of ha

The Crescent rogue claws dug lightly into the soft skin of Lily's neck, sharp enough to break flesh with the slightest twitch.“Stay where you are,” the rogue hissed, his voice low and venomous. “One wrong step, and she bleeds out before your eyes.”Lucas’s entire body trembled. He wanted to lunge, to rip the bastard apart, but the sight of those claws at Lily’s throat rooted him to the spot. Beside him, Liam’s face was carved from stone, though his eyes blazed with a fury that threatened to consume him whole.“Let her go,” Liam demanded, his voice deep and commanding, carrying the weight of an Alpha even though he kept his stance measured. “She’s not your fight.”The rogue chuckled, the sound bitter. “Everything connected to you twins is my fight.”Lucas’s hands clenched into fists. “If it’s us you want, then take us. But release her.”“Do you think I’m stupid?” The rogue sneered, pressing his claws harder into Lily’s neck until a thin line of blood fell against her skin. Lily fli
