Adam rushed into the house, his breath ragged, his shirt damp with sweat. His heart thumped so hard it echoed in his ears.

Evelyn, who was seated on the couch watching television, jumped at the sight of him bursting through the door like a hunted man.

“Adam?” she called, alarmed, rising to her feet. “Are you okay?”

He didn’t respond. He stood in the middle of the living room panting, his face pale, his eyes wide with confusion and fear.

Evelyn’s anxiety grew.

She hurried to the window, peering through the curtains to see if someone was chasing him. “What is it? Talk to me!” she demanded.

Adam’s voice came out low and broken. “Mum… what did you give me? What did you make me do?”

Evelyn froze, slowly turning to face him. “What are you talking about?”

He took a step forward, his eyes red. “That powder, the thing you said would only make her forget. You lied to me! You made me kill her!”

Evelyn blinked, startled by the outburst, but quickly straightened her shoulders. “Kill who?”

Celine sat stiffly behind her desk, her fingers pressed hard against each other, the veins on her wrist visible from the tension. Anger burned deep inside her chest, crawling through her like wildfire. Seeing Adam again that day had ripped open wounds she thought were long sealed. The sight of him, alive, arrogant, pretending to be the same man who once destroyed her, stirred every ghost she had buried. Her mind wandered helplessly into the past. She remembered the day she found out she was pregnant, how her heart had swelled with joy. She had been ready to love her child more than life itself, ready to give that baby the affection she never received growing up. But that dream had been stolen from her; torn apart by Adam and his cruel, manipulative mother. They took her peace, her dignity, her baby. They left her bleeding and broken. The ache never left her. She had rebuilt herself piece by piece, but the scars remained — reminders of betrayal and cruelty. She had sworn never to

Adam’s presentation began with a nervous stutter that betrayed the tension choking his voice. He stood before the boardroom screen, pointer trembling slightly in his hand, his once-confident composure nowhere to be found. Every flicker of the slides felt heavier than the last. The polished graphs and financial projections blurred in his eyes as Celine’s calm, piercing stare burned into him from across the table. His throat tightened. Her face, serene yet unreadable, haunted him. He could not escape it. The more he tried to focus on the figures and words before him, the louder the echoes of their past became in his head. Her voice, her tears, that last night he thought he’d erased forever.“Uh… as I was saying,” he muttered, clearing his throat. “The partnership will… will yield—”Celine tilted her head slightly, a faint, knowing smile brushing her lips. It was almost imperceptible, but it struck him like a blade. His voice faltered again. He glanced at her quickly and saw no sym

The room was silent for several long seconds after Adam’s outburst. His words, raw and trembling, hung in the air like smoke no one dared to breathe in. Eyes darted from him to Celine and back again. Even the hum of the air conditioner seemed to fade under the weight of tension. One of the senior executives, Mr. Raymond Firth, finally broke the silence. “Excuse me, Mr. Brooks,” he said, confusion wrinkling his forehead. “What exactly do you mean she was supposed to be dead?”His question drew sharp curiosity from the others. Most had no idea about the history between these two. Only a few, those who had once worked closely with Adam years back, looked visibly uneasy, as if they were aware there was more to this story than met the eye.“Yes,” Celine said at last, her voice steady but sharp, eyes locked on Adam. “You should answer the question, Mr. Brooks. What did you mean by I was supposed to be dead?”Her tone sliced through the stillness like a blade.Adam’s throat tightened. His

The moment Celine and Ferdinand stepped into the magnificent O’Neil Corporate Tower, she felt a strange chill crawl up her spine. Executives in sleek suits hurried through the wide corridors, assistants whispered into earpieces, and screens flickered with live market data.“This project,” Ferdinand began as they entered the executive elevator, “is not just any regular partnership. It’s one of the biggest technological ventures this company has ever handled.”Celine turned to him, curious. “What kind of venture?”“Groundbreaking,” he replied with a mix of pride and anxiety. “It involves advanced infrastructure — AI-integrated communication networks, renewable power grids, and multi-state expansions. We’re talking hundreds of millions in investment. Dozens of companies applied, but we shortlisted only three.”Celine nodded slowly, impressed. “That’s massive.”Ferdinand gave a tight smile. “It is. And only companies with perfect reputations and proven track records were even considered.

Celine froze in her steps, unable to believe what she was seeing. The man standing before her — Mr. Ferdinand Magellan was the same hotel manager who had ordered the guards to throw her out that night. The night her whole life had crumbled. The night she had bled, humiliated, abandoned. Her breath hitched as memories came rushing back: the cold rain, the jeering staff, the disgust on his face as he told the guards, “Take this woman out before she contaminates the hotel air.” And now here he was, standing in front of her as her assigned company guide.Ferdinand’s expression shifted from surprise to shock, then to disbelief. “No,” he muttered under his breath, his lips twitching. “Impossible.”He quickly turned, entered his car again, and reached for his phone with trembling hands. Within seconds, he was on a call.“Sir Alex,” he said hastily, his voice slightly trembling. “Please, I just arrived to pick the new Media Manager, and I need to confirm something. Is the woman’s name Celin

“Uh… less I forget,” Alex said, breaking the silence as Celine made her way toward the door, “one of our branch managers will be coming to pick you up later in the day to show you around the company and put you through some details of your job.”Celine nodded politely. “Alright. Thank you, Alex.”He smiled faintly, leaning back in his chair. “His name is Ferdinand Magellan,” he added, scrolling through some files on his desk.Celine smiled back, murmured a polite “Okay,” and turned to leave. She was halfway out of the door when the large TV screen fixed on the wall suddenly flickered to life. The channel was already tuned to a business news broadcast, but at first, she didn’t pay attention. She took a few steps forward before the words from the newscaster pierced through her calm.“…and finally, the highly anticipated wedding between Mr. Adam Brooks, CEO of Brooks Enterprises, and Miss Barbra Scott, daughter of the renowned business magnate Mr. Denmark Scott, is set to hold on the tw
