Larissa's POV

Brayden came home earlier than usual, which was my first clue that something was up.

The second was that he came in with the face of someone who’d practiced what he would say before stepping into the house. I know this because, from the solarium’s window, I had watched him pace the driveway muttering to himself before he finally walked through the front door.

By the time he walked in, I was seated on the couch with a bowl of popcorn in my lap, half-engrossed in the chaotic cooking contest show I had been bingeing since the beginning of the week. As if I hadn’t just watched him pace a hole in the driveway a few seconds earlier.

I heard the familiar sounds of his sole slapping against the tile and his keys jingling just before he tossed them into the tray on the console table. Finally, he walked into the living room, already loosening his tie.

“Hi.” He said, dropping into the armchair across from me and placing his briefcase by his feet.

Larissa's POV She liked it.She liked my work.It shouldn’t have mattered. But it did. Maybe too much.A couple of days had passed since Larissa had mentioned the painting.Since she had sat across from me, eyes wide and incredulous, asking if I’d really painted the ballerinas in her room and the field of flowers at Tiffany’s. Since she had asked to see my sketch pad, and I had said no, like a startled deer in headlights. I had said it with a sharp, final tone that made it seem like she had asked to crack my ribcage open and read the very contents of my innards to the entire world.Sure, some of what I said that day had been true. Sketches were raw and emotional, and most times, one of the most vulnerable parts of a person laid bare. But that wasn’t my entire reason for declining her access to my sketches. She had no idea that nearly every page of my most recent sketch pad held some version of her.Her profile. Her hands. Her hair tied up and loose. Her scowl when she was annoyed abo

Larissa's POV The ride home was quiet. Not awkwardly so, just… still. The kind of still that seeps into your thoughts and expands until that’s all that’s in your head.I sat in the backseat of the sleek black car that Tiffany’s driver had brought me in, the tinted windows casting the passing streets in a soft gray haze. Outside, the world glided by in the afternoon’s warm sun.I stared out the window, one hand resting loosely on my lap, the other fidgeting with my wedding ring.I kept thinking about the painting. That field of wildflowers was engulfed in flames.Brayden had made that. Painted it with his own hands. And it didn’t look like the efforts of a teenage hobbyist dabbling with watercolors and canvas. No, that painting had weight, depth, and emotion. A soul, maybe. It meant something. Maybe not to everyone, but definitely to him.But yet, I had never heard him mention painting. Not once. And I was supposed to be his wife. Not his real wife sure, but I had been living with him

Larissa's POV With just Tiffany and me left in the conservatory, the silence that followed was soft but not awkward.Tiffany set a used napkin on the table and turned to me, with steepled fingers. “You were very composed, Larissa. And the ladies liked you. That’s good. But still, you should be careful.”I blinked. “Careful?”She gestured to the food and drinks table. “Yes. With what you eat. What you drink. What you breathe in even. You can’t just have anything. It’s not proper.”I paused. Had I had one too many pastries for polite society standards? Had she been mentally counting my calories for me? Had I failed some sort of daughter-in-law test? “Maybe I shouldn’t have had that second croissant?”“Not the croissant.”It took me a beat to understand what she was getting at. “Oh. Yeah. The mimosa.”“The mimosa.” She gave me a patient, maternal look that made me feel like I was a child she was trying so hard not to scold. “Do you know how much sugar is in that thing? That’s not even t

Larissa's POV The women Tiffany introduced me to were all variations of well-dressed and well-off.Shauna, who did something with nutrition and also held the title of vice president at the country club where all the women frequented. Evelyn, who used to be a runway model and was now the owner of a luxury makeup and skincare line that sold exclusively in high-end boutiques. Claudine, whose family owned the champagne we would be drinking this afternoon: apparently this batch was infused with gold flakes. And then there was me.Former Patterson Financial staff. Currently unemployed. Currently on trial for murder.I joined them around the glass-topped table set with gold-trimmed plates and tiny food that looked too beautiful to eat. There were crustless sandwiches, flower-shaped pastry, and delicate crêpes stuffed with cream and fruit. These women were even more glamorous and prestigious up close. They were all perfectly styled and composed, like walking paintings. Diamond tennis bracele

Larissa's POV If someone had told me a year ago that I’d be agonizing over what to wear to brunch with my ex’s mother – who also happened to be my fake husband’s step mother – and her coterie of socialite housewives, I would have laughed in their face and then prompted decided that perhaps they were better off in a psych ward. But here I was – standing in the middle of my absurdly large closet flanked by three bored dogs and a steadily growing pile of rejected outfits, trying to figure out what the invitation actually meant by garden elegant casual.Brayden, of course, was no help.“Wear whatever you want.” He said, calmly lounging on my bed like I wasn’t currently stressing about this.Tiffany’s brunch invite had come with a follow-up text two days later.Tiffany: Hello darling. Can’t wait for Sunday! Let me know if you have any dietary restrictions. Remember, the theme is champagne, canapés, and conversation – so arrive hungry and curious.Brayden had promptly informed her of my sh
