Elena's POV

The coffee on my table went cold hours ago, but I barely noticed. My corner office on the forty-second floor of the building my company, Phoenix Advisory, overlooked the entire city, and normally the view calmed me. Today, it felt like the whole world was watching me through those windows.

My phone buzzed for the hundredth time this morning. I glanced at the screen and saw another unknown number. Another reporter, probably. They called all week ever since that first article hit the papers.

"Elena?" My assistant Sarah knocked on the door. "There's a journalist on line three. Says it's urgent. Something about Dr. Parker?"

I suddenly became annoyed. Dr. Parker. The man who helped Marcus fake his death. The man who was supposed to be rotting in prison where he belonged.

"Put him through," I said. My voice stayed steady despite the storm brewing in my chest.

The phone clicked, and a man's voice filled my office. "Ms. Thompson? This is Jake Morrison from the City Herald. I'm ca

  • Revenge is Best Served Cold   064: Unexpected Freedom

Dr. Parker's POVThe prison gates closed behind me with a loud clang, but I barely heard it. After twenty three months in that concrete hell, I was finally free. Free, but not really.I stood on the sidewalk outside Riverside Correctional Facility, holding a plastic bag with everything I owned. One change of clothes, a cheap watch that didn't work anymore, and forty-three dollars in cash. That was it. That was all I had left after thirty years as a doctor."Dr. Parker?" A voice called from behind me.I turned around and saw my lawyer, Sandra Mills, walking toward me in her cheap suit. She looked tired, like she always did. Overworked and underpaid, just like most public defenders. I couldn't afford a better lawyer because even though I was a seasoned doctor, I had a gambling addiction, which was why I needed the money Marcus offered me to fake his death."The paperwork is all finished," she said, handing me a folder. "You're officially released. But remember, you still have to report

  • Revenge is Best Served Cold   063: Still in Chains

Isabella's POV The freezing weather felt like needles on my face as I stood on the corner of Fifth and Broadway, clutching a small bag of pills in my trembling hands. Two years. Two long, horrible years since Victor's men dragged us into this nightmare, and I still couldn't believe this was my life."Move faster, college girl!" Rico, one of Victor's men, barked from his black SUV parked across the street. "You got quotas to meet!"I wanted to scream at him, to tell him that I had a business degree, that I used to be a big girl, that I wasn't supposed to be here. But the throbbing pain in my bad leg from standing all day reminded me to keep my mouth shut.A man in a dirty coat shuffled toward me, his eyes darting around nervously. "You got what I need?"My stomach turned as I handed him the small plastic bag. "Fifty dollars."He pressed crumpled bills into my palm and disappeared into the shadows. I counted the money quickly. This was my fifteenth sale today, and it wasn't even noon y

  • Revenge is Best Served Cold   062: Greater achievements

Elena's POV I stood in the lobby of my new building, watching workers hang the gold letters that spelled "Phoenix Advisory" above the entrance. Two years had passed since I started my consulting company, and now I owned a six-floor office space in a building in the heart of the financial district."The letters look perfect," Sarah said, walking up beside me with a clipboard full of grand opening details. "The caterers will be here at two, and the first guests should arrive by three.""How many people are coming?" I asked."Over two hundred," Sarah replied. "Business owners, lawyers, city officials and reporters from three different magazines.""And Julian?""He'll be here," Sarah said with a knowing smile. "He wouldn't miss your grand opening."I looked around the marble lobby with its crystal chandeliers and expensive artwork. Phoenix Advisory now had twenty-two employees spread across three floors. We handled financial consulting, business security, and our newest service, real est

  • Revenge is Best Served Cold   061: Growing Empire

Elena's POV I sat across from Robert Choi, the CEO of FitLife Centers, watching him sign the contract that would make Phoenix Advisory eight million dollars richer. Twenty fitness centers across three states, all needing protection from the financial fraud that was bleeding them dry."Ms. Thompson," Robert said, setting down his pen, "I can't thank you enough for taking on this case.""That's what we do, Mr. Choi," I replied. "Protect businesses from people who would steal from them.""The accountant we fired was stealing almost two million dollars a year," Robert said, shaking his head. "If you hadn't caught him, FitLife Centers would have been bankrupt by Christmas.""Now you'll be stronger than ever," I said, sliding the signed contract into my briefcase. "My team will have a full security plan implemented within two weeks."Robert stood up and shook my hand. "Phoenix Advisory has quite a reputation in the business community. Everyone says you're the best at what you do.""I learn

  • Revenge is Best Served Cold   060: Narrow Escape

Marcus' POV I sat on my thin mattress in the warehouse, counting the money I had stolen today. One hundred and thirty dollars. Seventy dollars short of my quota again."How much?" Isabella asked from across the room."One thirty," I said. "You?""One twenty," Isabella replied, her voice flat with defeat."Sophia?""One forty," Sophia said. "Still sixty short."The three of us had been failing to meet Victor's quotas for two days straight. Yesterday, none of us had made our two hundred dollar targets. Today was looking just as bad."We're all going to get punished," Isabella said quietly."I know," I replied."What do you think Victor will do to us?" Sophia asked.I didn't want to answer that question. Victor's punishments got worse each time we failed him."Maybe we should talk about Elena instead," I said. "It's better than thinking about Victor.""What about Elena?" Isabella asked bitterly."I saw her again today," I said. "She was having lunch with a man."Isabella and Sophia both
