Lucian's POV

CHAPTER 23: UNSETTLING NEWS

Lucian’s POV

Things had been going slowly yet smoothly since that day. The announcement had been more or less a success. I had enlisted Zayn’s help in knowing what was going on around me. I had to know what members of my pack thought about the situation.

I was in my office, going through some paperwork when someone knocked on the door. For a moment, my thoughts went to Zayn. Maybe it was him.

“Come in,” I called out.

The door slid open, and I raised my head to see it was one of the men in the pack. I set the document aside and focused my attention on him.

“Alpha,” the man bowed his head a little.

“Falco. Have a seat,” I gestured to the seat in front of my desk.

He nodded and gingerly took the seat. I noticed he was wringing his hands together, something I had known him to do over the years. Falco was one of the heads of the many squadrons of the pack. He had proven his worth in numerous battles and always had my respect.

VIOLET“But I’m telling you, water can technically be seen as wet,” Reese argued, her hands on her hips.I let out a sigh as I looked at Reese with an incredulous expression. We’d been going back and forth about whether or not water was wet as we got ready for the day. It was safe to say that Reese wasn’t the kind of person who liked losing an argument.“Whatever you say,” I sighed.I looked at my outfit once more in the mirror, satisfied with what I had on. Reese had been helping me work on my makeup skills, and I was impressed by how far I’d come. I’d put on light makeup for the day.Reese got up from the bed and began making her way after me. I opened the door and shut it behind us. We began making our way downstairs as I prepped my mind for what I had to do. I was the Luna now, which meant there were certain responsibilities and duties expected of me.Today, we’d be going to the main estate to have a general meeting with the women of the pack. VIOLETI felt like my heart had just stopped upon hearing those words. The girl was still looking at me with a certain glint in her eyes. Almost like she knew something she didn’t want to say. I willed myself to stay calm. There was no way this girl knew who I really was. She was probably just saying that. There was really no reason to panic.“I don’t understand what you mean by that,” I tried to laugh it off.“You don’t need to pretend. It all looks pretty forced,” she said, her voice blank.I watched as the girl’s blank expression slowly morphed into something unnerving. The girl was more or less creeping me out with what she was doing. I needed to leave. I felt like running away and not looking back for any reason.“I really don’t know what you mean. Please excuse me,” I slowly turned away, about to leave. The girl grabbed my arm, forcing me to stop in my tracks.“Violet. Don’t you want to hear what I have to say?” the girl continued, her smile growing by the second. When I didn’t

LUCIAN“I want to sleep so bad.”A long sigh left my lips as I leaned further into my seat. Documents were splayed all over my table like some kind of display. I didn’t know how long I’d been working, but judging by how dark it was outside, I’d say I’d been at it for hours on end.I felt beat from a long day of doing pack work. My main concern had been the issue brought to me by Falco. The rogue problem wasn’t something I could take lightly. It was something that could possibly cause mass panic. That was one thing I didn’t want.Maintaining a sense of peace and security was something I’d always strived to do in the pack. I didn’t want anything getting in the way of that. Not some dirty rogues who refused to cooperate, and not the sinister thought lurking behind their odd movements.I glanced at the clock on the wall. I figured I had worked long enough. VIOLET“Why not just do the world a favor and die, you ugly bitch!”If I could count the amount of times I had been told that, I’d probably get tired at some point and just call it quits. It was something that all my pack members had never hesitated to repeat over and over again. The man who had pushed me to the wall sent me an ugly sneer before letting out a huff and walking away. I was supposed to have been used to such treatment by now. I shouldn’t be affected by it anymore. Still…I couldn’t fight back the tears that spilled down my cheek.I bit my lip, lowering my head and walking up the flight of stairs. I kept my head down till I reached my room; no point in angering any more pack members. I was lucky to be done with all my work for the day.The main house was already clean and all the house chores had been done. When I shut the door of my room behind me, I let out a sigh I never knew I’d been holding. My whole body ached from working all morning. The sun was already setting whe

VIOLETThere was no single remorse on his face as he said those words. I wondered how someone could reject you without even looking like he cared at all.My mouth remained open as no words would come out. This couldn’t possibly be happening. Why was he doing this to me? It felt like my heart was being shattered into thousands of pieces and there was nothing I could do about it.“W-What?” The words left my mouth in a stutter.“You heard me. I don’t want you as my mate. The sooner you get that into your head, the better.” He looked at me with disgust, written all over his face.If looks could kill, I’d probably underneath the earth. I wondered why he was looking at me with such hatred in his eyes. Like I was some vermin that had crawled from hell. I felt like collapsing into a puddle. This couldn’t be happening.“You heard what he said.” A voice said from the crowd.I watched as the slut of the pack, Sienna, gingerly walked up to meet us. VIOLETMy eyes fluttered open, the rays of sunlight falling on my face. It made it hard to fall back asleep. It felt like someone had put sandbags on my eyelids. It was so hard getting them to open but eventually I did.It took some time before my eyes finally adjusted to the light. With a groan, I pushed myself up into a sitting position and looked around. I was on the floor outside the main house. I looked back at the tall building that had served as my home and prison for twenty-two years. The torture and torments I had endured in that house wasn’t something I liked thinking about. All of a sudden, memories of the previous night began to flood my mind. I clutched my chest, feeling like my heart was going to give out. It was still hard to believe that all of it had happened. I had been painfully rejected. The worst part was that he had embarrassed and humiliated me before the whole part.I took in a shaky breath and got up to my feet with a few groans. There was no point in hating my

I didn’t waste any time and began running in the opposite direction from the howls. The cold wind whipped past my face but I didn’t care all too much. All that mattered to me was escaping from them with my life. That was all that was important to me. That was all I cared about. That was all I wanted. My legs ached with each step I took but I knew I couldn’t dare slow down my pace. Any false step would mean my death. I’d suffered and endured so much these past few days. I couldn’t let it all end here. My fingers were clinging hard onto my bag as I sought to quicken my pace.My heart began thumping faster as the howls began getting closer. They’d taken notice of me. It would be better if I could transform now and run but it would only slow me down and give them an advantage over me.I could hear the sound of their growls getting closer and closer. T

It was hard opening my eyes but I eventually managed to do so. I squinted my eyes, trying to adjust to the lighting of the room. I looked around the room. It was empty save for a small lightbulb that hung from the ceiling.I tried to move my body but realized my hands had been tied behind my back. Trying to fight out of the ropes was nothing but a futile attempt. I let out a curse under my breath. So much for trying to find Lucian Sinclair. All my plans were going south so far. I had failed to find the one person that was supposed to help me get my revenge. I had no idea where I was being held. TRISTAN“I give you one job. One simple job for you to do.” I paced up and down the office as I glared at the men assembled before me. I could feel the anger building up in me the more the thought crossed my mind—and it definitely crossed my mind every single time.“And you do this.” I flung the glass cup in my hand at the wall in a fit of anger. The man whose head had been only a few inches away from the glass visibly flinched. It had been a pretty close call, but that had almost been him.Nobody wanted to be around me when I was in this fit of rage, but they didn’t have any other choice but to stand and wait for my next command. I was the Alpha, after all, and their allegiance was sworn to me.I let out a deep breath as I tried to steady myself. I had given the guards the assignment of searching for Violet. After the night of the ceremony, they had all woken up only to find out that she had packed her meager belongings and fled.It made me more annoyed that she just had the gall to

LUCIANThe car slowly rocked past stony paths before finally pulling on to a clear road. From the corner of my eyes, I noticed Zayn turn his head in my direction.“You could have just said we’d be going to see her,” Zayn sounded a bit annoyed.“I wanted it to be a surprise,” I shrugged, trying to fight back the urge to smile. The prospect of seeing my girl seemed to calm down all the nerves that were fighting deep within me.She was the one thing that seemed to tether me down when it felt like I was spiraling. Today, I wasn’t going there for any special reason whatsoever. I just really wanted to see her.“Sure you did. Reese is going to have my head today,” Zayn sighed.I took a quick glance at the man and noticed his attention was on his phone. He was probably talking to his mate. There was no doubt about that. Not like that was something that bothered me. Deep down, I knew it was something I could never have. I didn’t want one, never have and never will.“What did you do?” I asked.

LUCIANSpending the whole night obliging the drinking requests of my pack members was one thing. Waking up with a terrible hangover was another completely different thing.I winced as I cracked my neck to the side. The sunlight was just about peeking through the curtains, indicating that it was well past daytime.I got up from the bed, still feeling groggy from the night before. After my talk with Violet, I had left her room and had been cornered by Zayn.He pretty much dragged me to meet the other guys, and we spent the better part of the night drinking our hearts out. Now, I was suffering the consequences of it in the form of a splitting headache rocking through my head.If I closed my eyes, it could feel as if the migraine was getting a bit better. I had two options: stay in bed and let the headache wash through me or get up and look for some Tylenol. As attractive as the first option sounded, I knew that I had things to do today, so lying around doing nothing wasn’t exactly an opt

VIOLETI tried to maintain my indifferent mask, trying not to let any emotions slip through. I knew a bit about Lucian already. Any slip-ups I made would be used by him to further manipulate me and get what he wanted. I wasn’t about to let that happen.“Oh really?” I folded my arms, eyeing him from head to toe.“Yes really.” He raised an eyebrow. “Unless there’s something else you feel you’re obligated to add to this.”“Let’s be honest,” I let out a laugh. “You’re not just here to check on your mate. What do you really want?”Lucian watched me for a moment before replying. “You know we’re meant to be staying in the same room, right? To make this whole thing more believable?”I was starting to get frustrated by how easily he was just changing topics to avoid answering my question. It was hard enough that he’d just barged into my room. Now it was impossible not to feel swayed by his deep, gruff voice.“Too bad we can’t,” I said, not bothering to match my voice with what I was saying.“T

VIOLETIt all seemed like some kind of dream to me. I felt like maybe I would wake up and find myself back in my old pack house. Alone in my room. Wondering why I had even been born in the first place. But it was different now. Every single thing was different, and nothing was like it once was. I was a Luna now.Luna of one of the best packs across the peninsula—the Dark Moon Pack. Feared and respected both in name and prowess. To top it off, I was mated to the Alpha of said pack.I had left the function after a while of greeting and exchanging pleasantries with the pack members. Everybody wanted to get a glimpse of me and at least have a small talk with their new Luna.I had expected such a reaction and had been preparing for it, but it didn’t make it any less nerve-wracking. After a while, it was hard to ignore the growing exhaustion gnawing at my bones. It seemed Lucian had taken note of it and politely excused us from the pack members. He then led me to my room and promptly left w
