Chapter 2

Penulis: Goldie Rae
Over the past few years, I'd been working myself to the bone at Swanson Group during the day, just so that I could be a good wife to Justin. When I got home at night, I would still have to wait on him and Kayla, hand and foot. They were picky devils.

I was just in my early 30s, and yet, my hair was already graying at the roots.

Indeed, I looked a lot older because of that.

I turned and went back to my room to pack up my few measly belongings. I was already planning where to go to relax as soon as I got the money.

I didn't expect Justin to come in after me.

"It's late. You don't have to leave immediately. Why don't you just leave tomorrow instead?

"Don't I have an empty villa in Weston? You can stay there for the time being. I'll come and visit you whenever I have the time. I know you still love me, Tamara. Stop acting difficult."

He then seemed to recall something and grinned affectionately.

"However, I really can't let you have the title of 'Mrs. Swanson' anymore. I refuse to let my child bear the stigma of being called an illegitimate child as soon as they're born."

I didn't answer him. Instead, I picked up my suitcase and walked straight to the door.

"I don't have anything to say to you. It's my pleasure to be divorced from you. If you still want to show that you care, then kindly send me the alimony as soon as possible."

The winter wind was cold against my face, chilling me to the bone, but it still wasn't enough to put out the blazing fire in my chest.

Justin was as efficient as ever. When I woke up the next morning, I realized that a sum of three billion dollars had been transferred into my account.

I took the money and went straight to the most luxurious spa and wellness center in Cornton. I booked a complete package. It included a hair styling appointment, a full-body spa session, and a massage.

The haggard, gray-haired woman in the mirror was gone. It was now replaced by a beautiful young woman with striking red hair and clear, sharp eyes.

I'd only just changed back into my clothes when my best friend, Melanie Gilbert, suddenly called me.

The first thing she did was scream and squeal directly into my ear.

"Tamara Baldwin! What's happened between you and Justin? Is the world going crazy? Am I going crazy?"

I held the phone away from my ear and asked lazily, "What's the matter?"

"What do you mean by that! Don't you follow the news?" Melanie squealed incredulously. "Photos of Justin and that side bitch of his made headlines!

"He brought her to some event last night in public! He also told all of the media there that that bitch was his one and only wife and that they were getting married soon!

"And your damn in-laws agreed wholly with him and said that the bitch was worth it!"

She then lowered her voice and asked me in concern, "Are you alright, though, Tammy?"

The public recognition that I'd always yearned for from Justin evaded me for the entirety of my past life. However, he was giving it to Kayla so easily.

"I'm fine," I said, checking myself out in the mirror. I continued nonchalantly, "We're divorced."

"D-Divorced?"

Melanie refused to believe me. She'd witnessed me love Justin for more than a whole decade, after all. She often felt angry and frustrated on my behalf because I was sacrificing so much of myself and behaving like a loyal lapdog without ever getting anything in return in the relationship.

I didn't bother explaining further and chuckled lightly.

"Are you free tonight? Let's go get some drinks. My treat."

That night, we went to the glitziest and most extravagant bar in Cornton. The booths around us were all bubbling over with the most expensive Ace of Spades champagne.

A number of handsome male escorts sat around me, attentively and eagerly pouring drinks for me.

Melanie watched with wide eyes.

"Damn. I believe you now. You're totally over him. You never used to be like this in the past."

In the past, I used to want to prove to Justin that I wasn't after his money by always comparing prices and buying the cheaper alternative with more value for money. I didn't want him to think that I was just squandering away his money without taking care of the household.

Now, I was seated in the VIP booths while looking at my reflection on the glass. My hair was bold and red. I was wearing a perfectly tailored haute couture dress. It somehow felt a little strange yet familiar to see myself like that.

Melanie raised her glass and clinked it with mine.

"You're finally more reminiscent of how you used to be known—the legendary genius school beauty from Alberton College's School of Finance."

She took a huge gulp of champagne and began complaining indignantly on my behalf.

"Do you know how many venture capitalists were falling over their feet to try and get you? If you'd started your own company, you would have crushed the Swansons a long time ago!"

Ryan said agitatedly, "I never intended to use the information to coerce you into doing anything! Please don't misunderstand me!"You don't have to feel obligated to have dinner or even get together with me just because I used to sponsor your education!"I looked at Ryan's awkward yet arrogant demeanor and felt the frustration from earlier dissipating into thin air. I ended up chuckling."I won't."I softened my tone and continued holding his wrist without letting go."I just really, really want to have dinner with you."I looked into his eyes and asked him seriously one more time, "So, are you willing to have dinner with me, Mr. Ferrell?"Ryan's face turned red as I continued staring at him. Eventually, he nodded lightly in response.…I purposely created some tiny obstacles for Justin's overseas projects to stop him from bothering me again. I never thought of actually doing any damage to Swanson Group. I just wanted him to be a little busier at work so that he wouldn't have

"Ryan Ferrell? What the hell are you doing here?" Justin demanded.Ryan scoffed coldly. His presence was overbearing. "Why can't I be here? And if I weren't here, I wouldn't even have found out that you, Mr. Swanson, have such an interesting hobby of impersonating me!"How dare you use my kindness to blackmail the person I love!"Justin screeched, "Shut up, you bastard! You're spouting nonsense! I was the one who gave Tamara the financial support!""Really?" Ryan challenged, taking out his phone and scrolling for a bit. Then, he held out his phone to me and said, "Take a look for yourself, Tamara."These are all the records of the transfers that I made to your account anonymously through a charity organization, from when you were in high school, up until you graduated from college."I was the one who sponsored you all along!"My mind went completely blank. Every transfer Ryan made was clearly recorded and displayed on the screen that Ryan showed me, and the timing and the amount

I frowned. "Mr. Ferrell, you don't have to waste your time on me if you're just trying to annoy Justin."Ryan's eyes lit up and sparkled like the stars in the sky. Then, he suddenly wore a childlike smile."I'm not someone who'd waste time on that. I've really fallen for you, Tamara."His gaze was too intense, and I instinctively wanted to back away. However, he grabbed me by my sleeve. His long fingers felt warm as he lightly shook my arm. He softened his tone and acted childishly with me."Alright, alright. Then, just take it as me asking you out for a very platonic dinner with me."He then winked playfully at me, lowering his voice and saying, "I'll even tell you a secret about Justin if you'll have dinner with me."For some reason, the rejection died on my tongue when I heard him say that."Fine," I said after a slight pause. There was a sudden loud bang, startling both of us. The receptionist's voice rang out right after. She said, "I'm so sorry, Ms. Baldwin, but this gent

"Would I have gone back to find Tamara if you hadn't made such a mess of the company? Would I have had to lower myself and beg her to come back?" Justin hollered."I—"Kayla wanted to retort, but the ward door slid open just then, and Carrie walked in with a warm thermal flask. When she saw the mess on the floor and Justin's deathly pale face, she flew into a rage at once."Kayla Holt! You're getting more and more out of hand!"She set down the flask heavily and pointed a finger in Kayla's face. "Can't you see that Justin is not feeling well? What do you think you're doing, shouting and yelling in the ward like this!"Carrie got angrier as she spoke. "If Tamara were here, she would have already made Justin his favorite stew at home by now! She would never have come to the hospital to make such a huge fuss like you are now!""Tamara! Tamara again! Why is it always about that fucking bitch!" Kayla screamed at the top of her lungs, thoroughly provoked. She then scoffed and said, "I'

Ryan Ferrell was another wealthy heir from a family of tycoons in Cornton. He was also Justin's arch-rival and childhood nemesis. He sauntered over lazily and slung his arm around my waist in a familiar manner. He rested his head against my shoulder as he chided me playfully, "I've been waiting for you all day in the parking garage, darling. I didn't know that you were being held up by a barking dog here."Justin trembled with rage. He pointed his finger at me and yelled, "Tamara! You'd better have an explanation for this! How dare you betray me!"Then, he seemed to have thought of something, and a look of self-assurance appeared on his face."I knew it! You're just putting on an act, aren't you? You got Ryan just to make me mad!"Ryan rolled his eyes dramatically and began pulling me away."Let's not continue talking to idiots. It's a waste of time and lowers your IQ too.""Stand right there!"Justin wanted to run after us, but he was so mad and agitated, and his recent irregu

Meanwhile, my company was already on track within half a month of its inception.During this time, Kayla kept sending her people over to cause trouble for me. However, she used petty, underhanded tactics, all of which I easily and effortlessly defused. After all, I had been working in Cornton with plenty of accumulated connections over the years I'd been here, and she was just a greenhorn who was no match for me at all.The veteran employees in Swanson Group, whom I personally trained back then, had thoughts of switching over when they heard that I'd gone solo. Ever since Kayla took over, she'd been constantly making things hard for them on purpose. She'd been making their lives absolutely miserable. However, I wasn't in a rush to hire them at once.I just told them to secretly cause some minor trouble at their old workplace before they left, as a way to show their "loyalty" and "pledge their allegiance" to me.Kayla didn't think much about losing a few people. In fact, she was s
