Chapter 3

작가: Dyeing
A boom went off in my head, like fireworks exploding inside my skull and blasting my mind blank.

"Who did you say it was? Zoey Hudson?" I demanded.

"Yes. She provided proof of her relationship to you and reported that your medical records are fake. Our platform is currently verifying the claim. Until the information is confirmed, the donations you've raised cannot be withdrawn."

I could hardly believe it. It felt like being plunged into ice water.

"My medical records came from a top-tier hospital. There's no way they're fake!" I blurted out. "She has a grudge against me. She can't wait for me to die—"

"Please calm down, sir," the representative cut me off, then repeated, "We're verifying it now, so don't worry. Once we confirm everything is real, the funds will be released to your card right away."

My whole body was shaking, but I knew there was no point in arguing with customer service.

As soon as I hung up, I called Zoey, realizing that at some point, she'd unblocked me.

The second the call connected, I shouted, "Zoey Hudson! Why did you tell the RainDrop Fund I was faking my illness? Do you have any idea—"

"Aren't you?"

Zoey cut me off, her tone as casual as anything. There was even a hint of amusement in her voice.

"Chase, I know how stubborn you are. You can't bring yourself to come home, so you're pulling this stunt to make me cave first."

"How about this?" she went on, sounding magnanimous. "Come home and apologize, and I'll pretend none of it ever happened."

Her voice continued in my ear, but all I could feel was my heart sinking like a stone straight into a well.

So that was the kind of person I was in her eyes.

I tightened my grip on my phone, suddenly at a complete loss for words.

In the silence, Andrew's voice drifted through the line. "Zoey, is that Chase? Just let him come home. Honestly, I stopped blaming him for what happened three years ago."

Zoey's tone hardened. "I know you're the bigger person here, but Chase needs to understand what he did wrong. He's my brother, and I won't let him get away with behavior like this."

Though the words were spoken to Andrew, I knew they were meant for me.

A cold laugh escaped me. Then, slow and deliberate, I said, "Zoey, I did nothing wrong. He framed me. And I'm not faking anything now. Every single one of my medical records came from a top-tier hospital."

Refusing to give in, I added, "I will never apologize. Even if I die, I won't admit to something I never did!"

"You—"

Before she could get another word out, I hung up.

When she immediately tried calling back, I simply ignored it.

The sudden flare of emotion was too much. My chest heaved as a sharp pain spasmed through my lungs.

A moment later, a text from Zoey came through.

"Chase, I'm very disappointed in you."

  • Rich Sister Paid a Dollar for My Funeral   Chapter 10

Zoey clutched my phone and sobbed hysterically. With one hand pressed over her heart, she collapsed to the floor, her face so pale it was almost translucent.Only now did she finally understand how terribly wrong she had been.I had never changed. From beginning to end, I had always been the obedient, well-behaved brother she'd known. She was the one who had chosen to believe Andrew and insisted on teaching me some so-called lesson. But something even more devastating was yet to come. The police called. Someone had reported finding a mangled male body beneath a pedestrian overpass."Ms. Hudson, we've ruled out foul play," the officer said. "Fingerprint analysis has confirmed that the deceased is your brother, Chase Hudson."The phone slipped from Zoey's hand and clattered against the floor. Her mouth fell open, but like a child who had lost the ability to speak, she couldn't get a single word out.The officer's voice kept coming through the speaker, but her eyes slowly lost f

Zoey's knuckles turned white as she scrolled through my text history with the doctor, disbelief written all over her face. There wasn't much there. Most of the messages were just reminders from the doctor to come in for checkups and take my medication on time."Chase, why didn't you come in again today?""I'm sorry. I got fired, and I'm still dealing with the exit paperwork. I'll be there in a couple of days.""But your lung cancer is already advanced. If you don't come in and finalize a treatment plan soon, it'll be too late!""It's fine. It doesn't hurt that much. I'll come in in a couple of days, once I land a new job."…"It's been two months. Still no job? Chase, if money is the issue, let me know. I can lend you some.""Thank you, but my sister always taught me never to borrow money. I'd better not.""What about crowdfunding? Have you heard of the RainDrop Fund? People donate to help cover your medical expenses, so it wouldn't count as borrowing.""Does it really work?

The revelation stopped Zoey cold.Andrew's face instantly went deathly pale, his fists clenching. On the other end of the line, Mr. Lewis, the retired teacher who knew the truth, chuckled. "Sorry it took so long. I've been overseas all this time. After I retired, I just wanted to travel and enjoy life, so I lost touch with everyone back home."He paused, then added, "By the way, didn't Andrew give you his admission spot? Why did I hear that you dropped out?""Gave?" Zoey stressed the word, her sharp gaze snapping toward Andrew.Hearing her voice, Mr. Lewis hesitated. "Are you Chase's sister? Where is he?""Could you please say that again?" Zoey pressed. "Three years ago, Andrew gave his admission spot to Chase?""That's right. Their scores were only one point apart. Andrew said Chase had done him a massive favor, so he gave Chase the spot."Zoey's expression darkened at once."Chase wasn't going to accept it at first," Mr. Lewis continued. "Andrew got down on his knees and beg

After I killed myself, my soul didn't go to hell. With so much left unfinished, it went home instead.I drifted through the wall and found Zoey clutching my phone with a deep frown, talking to someone, though I couldn't tell who."What are you talking about? What plot?"The voice on the other end grew impatient. "Forget it. I was just calling to let you know. I've done more than enough."Only then did I realize it was the cemetery plot salesman.Guilt crept in. So much had happened over the past two days that I'd forgotten all about him.The salesman wasn't wrong. He'd done more than enough for me.At least he'd treated me better than my own sister had.The line went dead. Zoey's expression darkened, and she instinctively tried to call him back.Andrew caught her hand. "Zoey, don't call him back. It's definitely a scam! There are way too many scams these days. You'll just fall right into their trap."If Zoey had looked closer, she would have seen the panic in his eyes. But h

When I burst into Zoey's place, she and Andrew were having dinner. Without a word, I raised the knife and swung it straight at Andrew.Andrew flinched and scrambled out of the way.Zoey caught my wrist in a vise grip, her face darker with rage than I'd ever seen it."What the hell is wrong with you?" she demanded.I pulled out my phone and shoved the photo at her, then gritted out, "Your precious brother ran over my cat. With that kind of impact, he obviously did it on purpose! I didn't want to keep dragging up the past, but this? I can't take it!"Andrew shifted uncomfortably. "I… I didn't mean to. I paid compensation. I'm sorry, Chase—""You think an apology fixes this? Andrew Lane, haven't the last three years been miserable enough for me? You couldn't even spare a cat? Are you even human?"I screamed until my voice went raw, hating him so much I wanted to hack him to death right then and there.Zoey's brows knit together. "It was just a cat. Do you really have to go this fa

I didn't bother arguing or pleading. I just nodded, hoisted the sack of recyclables onto my shoulder, and walked home. That was the day Peanut left me too.A young woman named Bonnie Anderson didn't mind that Peanut had a broken leg. She'd driven two hours just to pick him up.Peanut had a new home and a new person to love him now.It was something I should have been happy about. But when I handed him over to Bonnie, something came over me. For no reason at all, tears started streaming down my face.Bonnie panicked. "Are you… Are you sad to let Peanut go? Don't worry. I'll take good care of him."I wanted to tell her that wasn't it.I wanted to tell her I was dying, and that Peanut could only have a good life with someone else. But the words caught in my throat, refusing to come out.Bonnie asked with concern, "You look really pale. Do you need to go to the hospital?"I shook my head.I didn't need a hospital. The only place I was going was hell.Grief, resentment, heartbre
