Chapter 4

Author: Roundy Cat
George had already packed up all my stuff and dumped it into the storage room.

I opened the cardboard box. Inside, I found the handmade ceramic figurine I had gifted him broken into jagged pieces. The handwritten sticky notes I had left him over the years were crumpled up at the bottom of the box.

He stiffened for a second, looking slightly embarrassed.

"Sorry about that. She gave me short notice when she said she was coming over, so I was rushing to clear the place out. I guess I wasn't being careful..."

I didn't say a word, silently rummaging through the room to hunt down the rest of my belongings.

Once everything was packed, George drove me back home.

As I pushed open the front door, Debra caught sight of us and laughed softly, patting my mom's hand.

"Look at those two. They really are inseparable! They must have sneaked out for a little stroll together. It's funny, really. Just a few days ago I was thinking about playing matchmaker for them, but turns out both of these kids already have someone in their lives..."

George's dad, William Allen, chimed in with a slight sigh of regret. "Yeah, I've always been so fond of Madison. I used to joke about how great it would be if she married our boy..."

My mom looked up, her eyes wide with surprise as she stared at me.

"Madison, you're seeing someone? Since when? How come I had no idea?"

She examined my face closely. "Last night, I swore I heard crying coming from your room. I actually thought you and George had fought. But looking back now, it must've been boyfriend troubles. You spent the entire night crying..."

I sniffled, forcing my voice steady.

"We've been together a long time. In fact, we were planning on getting married this year."

I shot George a cold glance. "You know him, too."

He instantly panicked.

"Madison! I... I already have a girlfriend. Harlow and I agreed we're getting married this year. Didn't you hear us say it the other day!"

Watching him frantically scramble to wash his hands of me felt like a fresh knife straight to the heart.

Then, a strange sense of calm settled over me. I turned back to look my mom in the eye.

"It's true, Mom. You can start getting ready for a wedding. Next Sunday, I'll bring him home to meet everyone."

On my wedding day, the venue was packed with guests.Up on stage, the host asked Ralph and me to share the story of how we fell in love. When the microphone was handed to him, Ralph spoke smoothly and confidently."I actually fell for her back when I was in ninth grade. That year, when the school held its singing competition, I happened to catch her performance on stage."The raw emotion and sincerity in her voice instantly drew me in. Before I even realized it, I had stayed for her entire set, utterly captivated and dying to meet her."On an impulse, I snapped a quick photo of her. That photo ended up being my prized possession for years."He turned his gaze toward me."Looking back, fate has been incredibly kind to me. It gave this long, quiet crush of mine a beautiful answer at last. And today, the girl from that stage is standing right beside me as my wife."…As he looked down at me with a smile, tears welled in my eyes.In that moment, the poetic words rang so true. "

From that day on, it was as if George had turned into a completely different person. He started dropping by my house constantly, finding any excuse to stay for dinner. He’d spend hours playing chess with my dad, or helping my mom out in the kitchen.A few times, he even cooked meals for me, carefully packing them into a lunchbox so I could take them to work.My mom, completely in the dark, even laughed and teased him about it."Who knew George had such a talent for cooking? His food tastes even better than mine. Honestly, if Madison didn't already have a boyfriend, I’d almost think he was trying to court her!"Frustration swelled in my chest. I picked up the lunchbox he had prepared and slammed it straight onto the floor. The lid popped off, sending cooked food and sauce splattering everywhere across the tiles.I was completely out of patience."Can you stop coming over to my house every single day? I have a boyfriend! I really don't want people to have the wrong idea about us.

George walked back home, completely dispirited.A few moments later, my phone lit up with a text from him.[If you did all this just to punish me, then congratulations. You got what you wanted.]I glanced at the message for a split second, then immediately locked my screen.I had to admit that when I first asked Ralph, part of me wanted revenge on George. But the more time I spent with Ralph, I discovered just how wonderful he truly was.He always remembered every little detail about me: that I hated cilantro and was deathly allergic to mangoes. Whenever I felt down, he would patiently listen and talk me through it.In the past, whenever I showed vulnerability around George, he only looked at me with irritation."Madison, you’re an adult. You need to learn how to control your emotions and stop treating me like your personal emotional dumpster!"So, I got good at hiding how I felt. I squeezed all my hurt deep down inside, quietly swallowing the pain all by myself. But Ralph act

I was at a loss for words. For the rest of the movie, I couldn't focus on the screen at all. My mind was totally consumed by the warmth of Ralph’s hand wrapped around mine. When the credits rolled, the crowd flooded the exits, separating Ralph and me. Out of nowhere, a hand grabbed my wrist. It was George, and he looked absolutely furious."Whose hand were you holding back there? How well do you even know him? Are you two already at the point where you just touch each other whenever you feel like it?""I don't even recognize you anymore, Madison. You followed me all the way to the movie theater, and then you turned around to hook up with some random guy? "Are you just doing this to spite me? Or do you honestly think that by degrading yourself like this, I’m going to feel sorry for you and take you back?"Anger flared in my chest, and I yanked my hand away."Whatever I do has absolutely nothing to do with you! Who are you to control me?"His face flushed red with rage. "Do your

By the time the kitten was warm and out of danger, two hours had passed.Ralph walked me down to my building, then suddenly pulled out his phone."Could I get your number? That way, I can keep you updated on how the kitten's doing."I added him, said goodbye, and turned to head upstairs, only to run right into George and Harlow.Harlow let out a smirk."Are you coming over to see George?"Well, your timing is pretty terrible. We're actually on our way out to the movies, and I don't even know if we'll be coming back tonight."I simply nodded, keeping my head down as I brushed past them into the lobby.Harlow's sweet, sickly voice echoed behind me."Oh darn, I totally forgot to ask if she wanted to come to the movies with us! Being all alone on Christmas is so lonely. She looks so pitiable, honestly. Thank goodness I have my baby with me!"She giggled, wrapping her arm tightly around George’s.…Just as I got back up to my door, my phone buzzed with a message from Ralph.I f

The kitten shivering in my arms was growing colder by the second.I swallowed hard and, putting all second thoughts aside, followed him into his place. As he opened the front door, I stepped into a spotless home. The interior was sleek and minimalist, decorated in shades of black, white, and gray. It was the classic, sharp look one would expect from a STEM guy.I slipped off my shoes at the entryway, and before I knew it, he had already run a basin of warm water in the bathroom."Bring the kitten in here," he called out.Warm steam filled the room, instantly fogging up my glasses. The moment my foot stepped into the bathroom, I tripped and lost my balance. Just as I was about to fall, a pair of warm, solid hands caught me, pulling me upright. As the steam cleared from my lenses, his handsome face came into focus right in front of mine.My heart skipped a beat.He offered a soft, reassuring smile. "Careful."I quickly straightened up, my cheeks burning. He gently took the kitt
