Alexa (Prudence)

I rush into the hallway just as Helia raises a gun to Hulio’s face. Gasps and screams break from the maids scattered around, and my whole body freezes in horror. The scream sticks in my throat before I tear it free, stumbling forward to Hulio’s side where he sits in his wheelchair.

“No, Helia! Please…put that gun away! Put it away!” I shriek, throwing myself between the barrel and Hulio.

Helia doesn’t move. His bloodshot eyes pin me like knives, unblinking, the gun steady and unyielding.

“If you’re going to shoot him,” I breathe, fire crackling through my fear, “then you’ll have to go through me.”

His chest rises and falls hard, shallow breaths burning out of him. Rage coils tight in his shoulders, trembling down to the trigger.

“He hit you…” Helia says it low, controlled, like a blade pressed to skin.

My heart stumbles. How does he know? Who told him? The thought dies in my throat because the air is too thick, too sharp, like I’m drowning in it.

“Helia…I’m fi

Alexa (Prudence). Thursday, December 25th. Two weeks later… “Deck the halls with boughs of holly… fa la la la la…” Voices ring out around the fireplace in Grandma’s drawing room, rich and merry. The air smells of cookies, eggnog, roasted chestnuts, home. I even join in the chorus, eggnog in one hand, cookie in the other. We’re all here; me, Martha, Jace, Eve and their kids, Jon, Aunt Annika and Uncle Brian. Grandma beams from her chair, basking in her family. She was insistent this Christmas we would be together. ‘Honey, this is the first Christmas I’ve had with you after two years. Don’t steal it from me,’ she’d said when I’d protested. ‘But Grandma, I’m supposed to be Prudence, remember?’ She only smiled. ‘Who says I can’t invite Prudence to sleep over at the Hills mansion? Ease up, pumpkin. Let’s celebrate your escape from that abusive man, Hulio.’ I’d flinched. ‘But I haven’t left him yet…: ‘Oh? You moved back into the house Helia lended you. You haven’t thought of going

Hulio. Wednesday, December 10th. Four days later… I sit in my wheelchair, which is parked in front of the door, waiting. Prudence and Martha live here. I’ve never been to this address before the wedding, but I remembered it from her employment file. My heart thunders in my chest. Guilt weighs me down as I wait. Stephan rings the bell again, then glances at me. “Maybe we should go back, Mr. Ripples,” he murmurs. I lower my eyes. Regret gnaws at me. Despite everything I did to her, she had a chance to destroy me and didn’t. She made sure Helia didn’t report me. ‘You should thank your stars Prudence got through to me in time. I would have fucked you up for life.’ Helia’s voice from the morning after that incident still echoes. The door suddenly flies open. I look up and there she is. Prudence. Her eyes wide, unblinking. Afraid. She staggers back, ready to slam the door shut. I stretch my foot forward. Her gaze drops to it, and I know exactly what she’s remembering. The time my fo

Helia. Minutes later… I’m climbing into my car after grabbing takeout when my phone blares in my pocket. The second I see Martha’s number flashing on the screen, my stomach drops. “Martha?” I answer, already bracing, fear spiking. My mind goes straight to Alexa. “Hi, Helia… it’s Alexa.” Martha's voice comes, except it’s shaking. “She just arrived here. Came running, because your brother tried to snap her neck in two.” My blood runs ice. I slam the engine alive, already pulling out of the parking lot. “How is she? Is she alright?” My foot crushes the gas. Then Alexa's voice breaks through. Calm, impossibly calm. “Hi, Helia.” Relief surges hot in my chest. “Are you alright?” I demand. “I’m fine, Helia… I escaped before he could hurt me. But…” “But what?” My grip clenches the wheel. My jaw cracks with rage. Hulio. I swear, this time, I’ll end him. “I think I hurt him.” She admits softly. “I pushed him hard… I’m worried I might have hurt his back.” I choke on disbelief. Anger e

Alexa (Prudence) Saturday, December 6th. Three days later… Morning. The winter air bites into my skin as I sit at the artificial ice rink, sketchpad balanced on my knees. Families swirl across the ice, parents holding children’s hands, couples stumbling and laughing. Joy rings in the air, loud enough to drown me. My pencil races across the page, capturing inspirations for my latest Hills fashion design requests. “I can see someone’s in good spirits this morning. Not escaping like she’s been doing for weeks.” My head snaps toward Martha’s cheerful voice. She’s wrapped in layers, cheeks pink from the cold as she lowers herself onto the bench beside me. Her gaze flicks to my sketch. Heat blooms in my face because she’s right. I have been running, hiding since Hulio crushed my fingers. But that night he apologized. He asked us to start over. And since then he’s been tender, attentive. Sweet. Listening. The constant tension has lifted, at least on the surface. “Hulio asked us to sta

Hulio. Wednesday, December 3rd. Three weeks later… Evening. “Mr. Ripples… Mr. Ripples…” Nurse Stephan’s voice cuts through the hum of the treadmill in my gym. I don’t listen. I keep walking. The machine's back support steadies me as I push forward. I don’t even need the damned hoist these days, but I use it anyway to keep my stride controlled. I had the therapeutic machine procured after the wedding, determined to train my legs here in private. At first I resisted it, resented it. Until she said those words, ‘I can’t wait for you to walk again…’ The way she said it cut deeper than any blade. Like she was better than me because she could walk, scarred face and all. So I crushed her fingers that day to remind her that my legs still exist. That it’s only a matter of time before I stand over her again. And that’s what I’m doing now. Using my time. Working. Sweating. It’s been days since the finger incident, and Prudence barely looks at me. She slips out of the house in the mornin

Ashley. Wednesday, November 12th. Four days later… Evening. My stomach twists. Even now, bile rises as I recall this morning, hearing Erwin and my mother together again. Their moans, their lovemaking echoing through the walls like poison in my veins. Disgust burns through me, but so does something worse. Betrayal. Never, in my darkest nightmares, did I imagine this would happen to me. I sit in a dim bar, waiting for Helia, trying to drown the pain. Erwin used me, lied to me, promised me everything and then chose my mother. A woman long past her prime, yet he clings to her as though she’s treasure. He still creeps into my room everytime, takes what he wants, but it isn’t enough. Not enough for me. Not enough of him. I remember the dinner party he threw a few nights ago his announcement of his marriage to Mum. He paraded her, professed his love. ‘My darling Scar, I am forever yours,’ he said Everyone clapped, congratulated them. And yet, his eyes never left me. His greed seeped
