LOGINArabella Montgomery has spent her entire life learning how to survive among the wealthy. As the daughter of one of Westhaven’s most powerful families, she knows that reputation is everything, secrets are currency, and love is supposed to be the one thing money cannot buy. She is engaged to the perfect man, surrounded by people she trusts, and preparing for a future she believes she has chosen for herself. Then everything begins to fall apart. A growing financial scandal threatens to destroy the Montgomery empire. The man she intends to marry may not be who she believes he is, and the betrayal that cuts deepest comes from someone she has loved like a sister. But just as Arabella’s world begins to crumble, Adrian Knight, the cold and dangerously powerful man her family has every reason to fear, makes her an offer she can hardly afford to refuse. He has spent years rebuilding his family’s fortune and has never forgotten what the Montgomery family allegedly did to his own. Now, he wants something only Arabella can give him: marriage. For Adrian, the marriage is business, revenge, and a means to secure what he needs. For Arabella, it may be the only way to save what remains of her family. But becoming Mrs Knight means entering a world where every promise has a price, every alliance hides a motive, and the man she despises may be the only person standing between her and the truth. Arabella thought the marriage would be her greatest sacrifice. She has yet to discover what Adrian Knight is really after—and what it will cost her to find out.
View MoreArabella Montgomery had three rules for surviving a room full of wealthy people.
Never sweat.
Never show them what you want.
And never, under any circumstances, let Adrian Knight have the last word.
Unfortunately, the third rule was proving particularly difficult tonight.
Across the ballroom, Adrian stood among Westhaven’s most influential businessmen in a perfectly tailored black tuxedo. Tall, broad-shouldered, and effortlessly intimidating, he looked like a man who had never been told no and had certainly never learned to accept it.
Arabella hated that she noticed him.
She hated even more that he seemed to know it.
“You’re staring,” Vanessa Whitmore murmured beside her.
Arabella turned to her childhood best friend. “I’m observing.”
“Of course you are.”
“His arrogance is fascinating. I wonder how someone manages to have so much confidence with so little charm.”
Vanessa laughed into her champagne.
“Then why haven’t you looked away?”
“Because I’m conducting research.”
“Naturally.”
Before Vanessa could tease her further, a familiar hand settled at Arabella’s waist.
“Researching what, darling?”
Sebastian Cole stood beside her, handsome in a dark suit, his warm smile making him look like the most approachable man in the room.
Her fiancé.
The man she intended to marry.
“Nothing important,” Arabella replied, turning toward him.
Sebastian kissed her cheek. “Good. I’d hate to compete for your attention.”
She smiled. Sebastian was thoughtful, charming, and attentive in all the ways a woman might hope her future husband would be. He remembered the little things she mentioned and always seemed to know when she needed cheering up.
Her father adored him.
Her friends approved of him.
And Arabella believed she had found someone she could trust.
“Have you spoken to your father about the investment proposal?” Sebastian asked.
“Not yet. He’s been busy preparing for tonight.”
“I understand. But it would be good to have his thoughts before the end of the week.”
“I’ll speak to him tomorrow.”
“Thank you.”
His attention drifted toward the ballroom entrance, where a woman in a silver dress had just arrived.
Arabella followed his gaze.
“Who is she?”
Sebastian looked back at her. “Who?”
“The woman in silver.”
He glanced toward the entrance again before shrugging. “I don’t know. Why?”
“No reason.”
“You’re overthinking things, Arabella.”
Perhaps she was. She forced herself to look away.
Tonight was about the Montgomery Foundation, her family’s charitable organisation, which had spent decades funding education and healthcare initiatives across Westhaven. Her father, Richard Montgomery, believed wealth meant little if it could not be used to help others.
Arabella admired him for that.
Lately, however, something had changed. He was distracted, constantly taking calls and disappearing into meetings he refused to explain.
She had noticed. She simply hadn’t found the right moment to ask.
“Miss Montgomery.”
The familiar voice made her close her eyes briefly.
Adrian Knight stood before her.
“Mr Knight,” she replied coolly.
“Enjoying the evening?”
“Immensely. It was peaceful until you arrived.”
Sebastian laughed.
Adrian’s expression barely changed. His pale eyes settled on Arabella with quiet amusement.
“Still confusing rudeness with wit, I see.”
“And you’re still confusing money with a personality.”
Vanessa nearly choked on her drink.
“Do you two ever have a conversation without insulting each other?” Sebastian asked.
“No,” they answered simultaneously.
For a brief moment, Adrian’s mouth curved into something almost resembling a smile.
Then it vanished.
“Enjoy the gala, Miss Montgomery.”
“That’s the plan.”
His gaze lingered on her before he turned away.
Arabella watched him disappear into the crowd, irritated that even a brief conversation with him could ruin her composure.
Across the ballroom, Adrian stopped beside a tall window overlooking Westhaven’s glittering skyline.
He wasn’t watching Arabella anymore.
His attention was fixed on Richard Montgomery.
And whatever he saw on the older man’s face made his own expression turn cold.
Arabella didn’t notice.
She was smiling for a photograph beside her fiancé, surrounded by people she trusted, in a world she believed she understood.
She had no reason to suspect that beneath the glitter, something was already beginning to unravel.
She wasn’t wrong.
Vanessa arrived at the Montgomery residence twenty minutes later.Arabella found her pacing beside the sitting-room windows, her phone clutched tightly in one hand. Her usually composed friend looked unusually nervous.“What’s wrong?” Arabella asked.Vanessa slipped her phone into her handbag. “I need to tell you something.”“That much I gathered from your message.”“Arabella, I’m serious.”“So am I. You’re pacing around my sitting room like someone has threatened to bury a body in the garden.”Vanessa managed a brief smile, but it quickly disappeared.“Have you spoken to Sebastian today?”“Yes. We had lunch.”“How did it go?”“Strange. He admitted he knew about my father’s financial problems before I told him, but he claims he didn’t know how serious they were.”Vanessa looked away.Arabella noticed.“Why are you avoiding my eyes?”“I’m not.”“And you’re twisting your bracelet. You only do that when you’re nervous.”Vanessa stopped moving her fingers.“I think you need to be careful
Sebastian chose a quiet restaurant overlooking the Westhaven marina, the sort of place where businesspeople could speak in low voices without worrying about being overheard.Arabella arrived ten minutes early. She chose a table near the window and watched yachts drift across the water while she rehearsed what she wanted to ask. When Sebastian finally walked in, he wore his usual easy smile and carried a small bouquet of white roses.“For you,” he said, leaning down to kiss her cheek. She looked at the flowers before accepting them. “You didn’t have to.”“I wanted to.” He sat opposite her. “You sounded upset on the phone.”“My father told me about the old dispute between the Montgomerys and the Knights.”For the first time since he arrived, Sebastian’s smile faltered.Only for a second. Then he reached for the menu.“That old story? I thought your family had put it behind them.”“Apparently, Adrian hasn’t.”“Adrian has never been interested in letting anything go if he thinks it gives
Arabella drove home with her father’s message burning in her thoughts.Do not discuss this with Adrian. Come home. We need to talk.It was not a denial. It was not even an explanation. It was a warning, and she was beginning to understand that the Montgomery family had been keeping more than one secret.Richard was waiting in his study when she arrived. The curtains were drawn, and several folders lay open across his desk. He looked as though he had aged overnight.“You wanted to talk,” Arabella said, closing the door behind her. “I’m here.”He gestured to the chair, but she remained standing.“Start with the Knight family.”Richard removed his glasses and rubbed the bridge of his nose. “Twenty years ago, your grandfather and Adrian’s father entered into a business partnership. They were developing a property project on the waterfront. It was supposed to be one of the largest investments in Westhaven.”“What happened?”“The project collapsed. There were allegations of financial miscon
Chapter 3: The First CrackArabella barely slept that night.By morning, the questions she’d tried to ignore had multiplied. What financial obligations had Adrian been talking about? Why had her father looked frightened? And why had Sebastian reacted as though the subject was familiar to him?A message from Sebastian appeared on her phone.Good morning, beautiful. I have a few meetings today, but I’ll call you later. Don’t let last night bother you. Your father will explain everything when he’s ready.Arabella read it twice before setting her phone facedown. She wasn’t a child who needed everyone deciding what she was allowed to know. If her family was in trouble, she deserved the truth. After showering and dressing, she headed downstairs. Sunlight poured through the tall windows of the Montgomery residence, illuminating the polished marble floors and expensive artwork. Her father sat in the breakfast room, reading something on his tablet. A cup of untouched coffee rested beside him.
