Well, that was intense...
We all heard the scream, the screeching sound that I somehow knew was Phoenix. Most of my children were in the nursery, except for Kaze who is a teenager in his dragon form and Lyra who is only three months old. Kaze was in school, taking flight lessons this morning and Lyra is home with me.Ishir had taken Nova and Brooke on a run through the forest, both girls loving the time that they get to spend with their father. I’d just finished nursing Lyra and put her down for a nap when I heard Phoenix's warning and cold fear had rushed through my body. The witches are here.I grabbed Lyra and raced to the Big House. They have the nursery there and I know some of the older teenagers, like Enya and Aspen will be there. Unlike Kaze and the other elemental children with the dragon gene, neither of those young women were raised to fight, so it’s better for them to stay and protect the young. As I rush into the Big House to drop Lyra off, Everett is coming in from the medical center with the girl
CedricI was teaching a class on Lycan and werewolf history when I heard both my mate and my daughter bugle an angry warning. Fire dragons are passionate creatures, but they don’t bugle frivolous warnings. Ever. Since both my girls bugled at nearly the same time, I knew something was very wrong.‘TANA!’ I yelled in the mind link as I sprinted out of class.‘Phoenix rose! Something’s wrong but I can’t tell what it is. The dragons are about to attack her,” she says.I shift as I run out of my classroom. I see Phoenix's fiery figure in the sky. I’m nowhere close to her but I can already feel the heat of her anger. As I race toward the chaos, Phoenix shoots a flame aimed at nothing that I can see. I’ve almost reached them when Zephyr screams for Iniko and races to the nesting grounds. At the same moment, I catch a scent and a vicious snarl erupts from my gut.‘Cedric?’ Tana’s concerned voice floats into my head.‘Banari is here,’ I snarl back. I remember the scent from when we rescued Inik
I don’t know what the fuck is going on, but I’m pissed. Both of my parents seem to know, Ajax seems to know, the other elementals seems to know, and no one thought it was a good idea to let ME know? The thing I thought was the danger, the Phoenix, wasn’t, and I wasted valuable time focusing on her when I should have been focusing on the real danger, these fucking witches. They’re after my kids and my mate!I’d heard my mother’s cry for Iniko. I’d hear Eliane call out to me, but it was her panicked scream that had finally cut through my anger. Then, her quiet voice in my head, calling me to her that sent a wave of icy fear rushing through me.When I’d rushed back, I’d found her unconscious, buried under a tree. By then, the witches and warlocks had started appearing out of thin air. I couldn’t spare much time for them as I bellowed for Everett.I lifted the tree off my mate and shifted. “No, no, no! Eliane! Eliane, open your eyes. I’m right here! I’m right here!”I felt my dragons figh
“FENIAN!” I say, rushing a still broken Ishir into the medical center. He pokes his head out of a room, the room I’m assuming has Eliane, then rushes to me.“Oh shit!” he says.“Exactly. Everett says to run a full body xray on him. We need to know which of his organs were punctured and I need to know if he’s stable enough for me to go help others.”He turns, waving me to follow him. “Have you seen Tesha?” he asks.“No, but it’s chaos out there.”He nods.“Can’t you speak to her through your bond?”“It’s shut down. I’m trying not to worry about what that means ...” he says, swallowing hard.“Tesha is a strong woman. She’ll be okay. When I go back out, I’ll look for her. How is Naida?”“It’s going to be a while before she can fly again. If she were a mature dragon, maybe, but as a hybrid ...” he shakes his head. “I need Doc Everett to look at her.”“I’m not sure who he was going to help next, but you can expect to have more like these two coming in. How are Eliane and the baby?”“I can
I knew Emmi wasn’t ready for my power, but we couldn’t wait any longer. Her fear had flooded through the bond between us, then burned off with my fire. There is no room for fear now. The witches are here and it’s why I am here. While the others were fighting, I’d been protecting the babies. Each time one got sucked into the tunnel, I would fight to pull them back out. But there were a lot of witches trying to get to the babies and I knew I hadn’t pulled them all back. When I saw the powerful witch who had been fighting with Zephyr take off running, I knew she was going to close the portal. I had screamed my anger and gone after her, burning through the remains of the tunnel so the dragons could get to the witches that I hadn’t gotten to yet.I could hear the screams of pain and fury all around me, feel the pain of the others as they fought to protect the hatchlings and each other. This Academy, this place, has become a home to many of these dragons and hybrids who had no where else to
As soon as we had the coordinates from the warlock, we raced to find Phoenix and the hatchlings. I’m not as large as Ancalagon or even Avani, but my mate is there and I pushed my dragon to speeds I’ve never achieved before.Ancalagon arrived first, slamming into a wall of magic. Avani hit it too, but I was able to pull up before I crashed into the invisible wall. Tana and Kenna both stopped and when Ancalagon roared his fury, we all started using our elements to attack the wall of magic. While Avani and I made the earth rumble, Tana and Kenna blew their fire at the wall. Ancalagon began dropping tornados, pulling water from the ground and splashing it up to where Tana and Kenna are heating the wall. When the first cracks start to form, Ancalagon yells for all of us to get back. We do and Ancalagon stands in front of the wall, then spins, slamming his giant tail against it. The wall explodes, shattering around us.We all shift then race inside. I lift my nose, trying to find my mate’s
Three Days LaterThere is so much pain, so much loss. I’m overwhelmed by it, but I have to keep going. The students here, those who are left, are depending on me.Yhendorn, Kenna, Merethyl, and Avani have taken all of the dead elves back to their troupes for a proper burial. Cedric and Tana have taken the dead wolves back to their packs to be burned so their ashes can return to the Moon Goddess’ realm.Tonight, the dragons and hybrids will lay Sena and Dion to rest. They hadn’t been with us long enough to learn how to fight and use their elements and they had been the casualties on the dragon and hybrid side of this war.I walk to the nursery, checking on the young. There are so many of them and they are all frightened, especially since their parents have been gone so much lately.Aithne, Ehrendil, and Daijaro are struggling the most. All of them are under three. Their dominant gene isn’t dragon, which makes their development slower. Tana, Cedric, Merethyl, and Avani have spent every
***This is Book Six of the Elemental Dragon series. References will be made to events that happened in previous books without being fully explained here. While this book can be read as a standalone, it is recommended that you read the series, starting with The Arena.***Every time I’m called to rise, I choose a human who is worthy. One whose heart is pure. One who is kind and loving. One who values the lives of others and is willing to give their lives to protect those around them. It has to be a human with these attributes because, while I always rise again, my humans do not.Over time, I’ve realized that when I’m called, there is always a human who stands out to me, one who calls to me in some way or another. This time, when I felt the call to rise, it was Emmi who called to me.She was an orphan, someone who never had a family, but who always stood up for the underdog. She was the one who would walk through the forest and help the creatures who were injured or trapped. They responde

I felt the rush of fear from Emmi a moment before I felt power unlike anything I’ve ever felt before flow through my body. That was followed closely by a burning fury that rushed through my veins as Phoenix’s mind snapped into my consciousness. I knew before I saw her that Phoenix had risen and that the battle was here.I raced out of class, rushing to her and had tripped when I saw her flaming body in the sky. She is utterly and completely gorgeous. Then, my own fear brought me back to reality as hybrids and laboratory dragons all shifted and launched into the air to fight her.“NO!” I screamed, watching Kenna fly up to snap at the dragons flying toward Emmi.I watch Daichi, an earth dragon lunge at Phoenix but Tana flies up to intercept. She bellows that them to stay back while Kenzo tries to tell the others to stop. Tesha, in her scaled Lycan form flies in front of Phoenix, trying to help protect her as wolves come rushing from every direction.“AJAX!” Ancalagon bellows, flying in f
Something didn’t feel right about the time it has taken for the witches to attack. I’ve kept my senses sharpened on the portal, waiting for the moment when the witch or multiple witches come through, but so far, nothing. It’s not sitting well with me. I’m here, and there’s a reason I’m here. They wouldn’t have put the portal beside the hatching grounds if they weren’t planning to steal the eggs, so why wait?‘I want Ajax to take us to the place where the others felt the magic and couldn’t find the witches. I would fly us, but I’m not sure you’re ready for that yet,’ I tell Emmi. I wish I could fly. I want to so desperately, but I know it would disappoint Ajax if I pushed Emmi too hard, too fast.‘I’m not sure we want anyone to see you yet,’ she says, but I can feel how terrified she is about flying. She goes to find Ajax and tells him what I said, since I still can’t mentally connect with him.“Phoenix, Ishir has been there multiple times. He has the best nose of any shifter out there.
