Lyra POV

The next day I stayed inside, to my wolf’s frustration. Tonight was the full moon, and all she wanted to do was run. But the looming full moon meant my emotions were closer to the surface than I was comfortable with. I didn't want to risk coming across Rebecca or being a bitch to Ronan’s mom. Again.

To my relief, I bumped into neither not even in the kitchen when I went to snag food. I heard the front door open and close a few times throughout the day, but I kept to myself.

Usually, I

Ronan POVThey went silent immediately, and I hadn’t even used my Alpha voice. That was friendship. That was respect. I took a deep breath in and consulted the only truly neutral party.“Marni, what do you think?”She blanched slightly at being asked her opinion but didn’t hesitate to give it. “I believe Rebecca,” she replied swiftly. “Lyra thinks she has Alpha potential, and she’s spent the last few weeks getting the shit kicked out of her. I think she’s learned her lesson and realizes what she had here. She’s suffered enough. You’ve suffered enough. Let’s get Lyra back.”My eyes felt hot, and I blinked rapidly to clear them. Standing around me were friends old and new. People I’d grown up with, and people I barely knew. Yet we were all united in one common purpose. One common enemy. One common goal.“Alright, what do we need to do?” I finally conceded.WE WERE at that awful part in any plan where everything was set in place, and the parts that could move were moving. There was nothi

Ronan POVIt had been nearly 24 hours since Vira had left me, and I still didn’t feel any less rattled. I was mortified how I’d broken down in front of her—a virtual stranger, a potential ally for our pack. She hadn’t viewed it the same way, apparently. Thankfully.I didn’t have time to dwell on it after she abruptly announced our partnership. Vira dove straight in, telling me everything she knew about the coven whose magic lingered on the chains in front of us.“They’re one of the few covens to completely modernize. Most of the women live out in society. Some even take husbands. This coven in particular is structured like a workhouse. Each witch receives orders on what to make, and when it’s completed they send it back to the coven Matriarch to deliver to the customer.”I raised an eyebrow. “And the money?” I asked.Vira snorted. “Controlled by the Matriarch.” At my sour look, she shrugged her shoulders. “Better than living with her. She’s a right bitch, that one.” She chuckled then

Lyra POV I ran my fingers along the chain around my neck back and forth, back and forth. The repetition calmed me as I laid on my bed in the cramped little room. It was a wonder Travis hadn’t taken it from me yet.My mom hadn’t been home when I swung by earlier. It wasn’t the time I usually swung by after dinner, but it had been the end of the workday, so there was no reason she shouldn’t have been home. I left her a note to gather the female wolves for a meeting. I didn’t give too many details, but if Travis or any of his men found it, it would be easy to assume it was about the mating ceremony. I had wanted to talk to her about the true reason though because I couldn’t afford untrustworthy females at the meeting. Stockholm syndrome was a real thing, especially with their mates, no matter if they were abused. I hated it, but I didn’t blame them. This pack wasn’t easy to escape from. I would know. It would be even harder for them since they were mated.A soft, timid knock sounded on

Lyra POV Despite the knots twisting my gut, I knocked on the door of Travis’s office. Please don’t be here. Please don’t be here.“Enter!” Travis’s serious voice reached me through the closed door.I gulped down my rising panic, which had my wolf whining inside of me. I had to do this. I couldn’t take him down alone. In fact, I literally couldn't because of my yield, which meant I needed to do this the stealthy way. The way that seemed completely cowardly and unappetizing to my wolf. She wanted to go out in a blaze of glory, blood running down her face. She was going to get us both killed.Grabbing the doorknob, I twisted it and slipped inside. My gaze lingered on the cabinet, and now that I knew what was inside, bile rose in my throat. My wolf growled in my head. She was so loud I hadn’t realized Travis spoke.“Well?” His eyes lingered on me, annoyance tightening them.“Sorry?” I forced my head to bow in submission. After my run last night, it was even harder to push down my Alpha p

Ronan POVHer blunt questions left much to be desired. I decided to answer just as directly. “He’s dead.”She blinked. “Did you kill him?”I reared back in disgust. “No!”Vira smirked. “Like I said, too much upheaval. Now, what did you want? The cats will need feeding.”Keep your temper. All witches are half-senile. I cleared my throat. “We seem to be having trouble with vampires lately. We keep tracking groups of them heading toward a rival pack, but the bigger problem is that they’re doing so during the daylight.”I tossed the pendant on my desk in front of us both. Vira leaned forward, her eyes sparking with interest then darkening in disgust. “I told them selling out to others was a bad idea. Damn coven.”I’d never heard a witch speak so irreverently about her coven before. A witch’s bloodline was usually considered sacred. “You think your coven is working with these vampires then?”She leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms. “Possibly.”I closed my eyes, willing myself to ha

Ronan POVWhen I woke up, the first thing I saw was my mother’s anxious face. “He’s awake,” she said, relief coloring her voice.Brett was there next, scrutinizing the size of my pupils and furrowing his brows. “Seems alright. The backlash of magic just knocked him for a loop like the others.” Brett wiped his hands and stood.I swung my legs over the side of the bed. I felt like I’d run a marathon yesterday but otherwise normal. “What happened?” I struggled to piece the vampire fight back together in my mind. The door opened and Xavier strode through, his arm in a sling. Seeing him jolted my memories back together.“Aniyah. Is she alright?” Xavier asked.Brett slammed the rag he’d been wiping his hands with down into a pail. “She won’t be leading patrols anytime soon but yes. She needs to stay in bed, however. I was actually hoping you could give her an Alpha order. Otherwise she’s likely to injure herself. As most of you seem to do these days.”His request felt sour in my ears, the a
