Chapter 3

Autor: I. Winter
In the following days, the hospital bills and the agency's contract breach clause crushed me with the weight of mountains.

While my mom remained in the ICU, I could feel my money burning like wildfire.

For the sake of money, I even took part in Ultimate Survival, the most despised prank reality show.

However, what shocked me more was spotting Stan there.

His manager, Lilian Taylor, then sighed in disapproval. "Please try to hold back. Mia is already being flamed all over the internet, and you'll drive her over the brink with any more than that."

"That's not my fault when she's being a loser, is it?" Stan growled, as cold as ice.

Lilian sighed. "Just try to make an effort. Your ship still has fans."

Stan simply chuckled. "Play nice with her? Does she deserve that much? Do you think I would've played along if the agency hadn't forced me into this PR relationship six months ago and promoted it? Just looking at a woman who would stoop that low really puts dirt in my eyes."

I stood behind a wall, my fingers clawing so hard into it I was bleeding.

That man sure was savage!

He wasn't that nasty six months ago when the PR ship first started, but now, I realized that it was his own PR team that handled our chats.

Even as the thought hit me and left me suffocating, Breaker texted me.

[Long day at work, babe? I ordered takeout.]

Seeing that, I took a deep breath and put my phone away as I headed inside.

-

We were engaging in a mudball fight for the show when a starlet named Kelly Smith deliberately crashed into me, knocking me into the mud puddle.

She giggled, "Oh, Mia, I'm so sorry. It was an accident."

The production staff didn't stop as that was exactly what they wanted, while Stan stared at me loftily in disgust. "Don't try to play dead. Continue, or go to Block B if you can't stand this much!"

As every camera focused on me, I wiped the mud off my face and quietly pushed myself up.

I would bear with it for the sake of my mother's medical bills.

Later, during the break, while I was hiding in a corner to wash my face, Stan was sitting in an SUV nearby, his eyes on his phone.

Suddenly, my phone vibrated.

[Sorry, babe. Just saw a really hateful face so I was in a bad mood.]

[But just the thought of you cheers me up.]

My head jerked up toward Stan to see his long fingers rapidly typing on his phone.

What shocked me even more was that as he typed, his left index finger would tap his lap by habit.

It was just like the videos of his hand that Breaker had sent me, where he did the exact same thing.

My heart skipped a beat.

No… That was impossible!

How could Stan be Breaker?

My fingers shaking, I decided to prove it by sending Breaker another text.

[What are you doing right now, Breaker? I'd like to hear you sing.]

Then, I stared fixedly at Stan in the distance.

One second passed.

Then two.

Suddenly, he lowered his phone and rubbed his temples in annoyance before turning to talk to his assistant, Ben Jones.

Soon, Ben hurried off, and then my phone rang.

It was a voice message, and I tapped into it.

"Sorry, babe. I'm outside at the moment so there's a lot of noise, but I'll sing to you later in the evening, alright?"

His voice was machine-altered and had an electric hiss, but his intonation was exactly the same as when Stan spoke to his assistant just now.

And the thought left me freezing up.

So the perfect boyfriend who had stayed with me for two years, always asked after me, and wired me money just because I asked… was also the monster who kicked me when I was down and forced me to pay three million over nothing!

I was laughing silently as I stared at my phone screen, my tears rolling down my cheeks, mixing up with the mud.

'Oh, Stan…

'If you ever find out that the babe you've cherished for two years is Mia Luther, the woman you destroyed, what will your face look like?'

I wore a black suit dress for the press conference, and my hair was tied in a bun.As I stood before dozens of press agencies and calmly introduced the new series, Stan sat silently in the third seat from the left in the second row, completely silent. He didn't hide when the cameras turned to him, even quietly nodding at the stage.During the Q&A session, a press member stood up and asked, "Ms. Luther, what is the nature of your current personal relationship with Mr. Herbert?"Everyone turned silent as they watched me just then.Holding up my microphone, I smiled as I said, "Just to clarify, he is not present as a guest."Stan's fingers curled over his knees. As the cameras all turned sharply toward him, he stood up and started toward the stage. However, he soon paused and stayed below the stage, while everyone stayed silent and quietly filmed everything.Looking into the cameras, he said, "I've hurt Ms. Luther irrevocably over some rumors six months ago. I have no right to as

At exactly eight in the morning the next day, Stan's studio released the complete surveillance footage, showing the woman in red rushing in.Stan stood in her way, while she snapped, "You're a skank just like your mom!"The video was sharp, and the audio was perfectly synchronized with the lip movements, while Eve's outburst was clearly shown to be all her, and Kelly's edits were completely disproved. It blew up before long, with the hashtag #Kellyseviledit topping searches, followed by #Kellylibel. My lawyer also put out a statement that we would be suing Kelly for fabricating libel, causing distress to the bereaved, violating image rights, and disseminating sensitive private information, demanding three million in damages. The replies to Kelly's pinned post went crazy.[Liar! More evidence? More like malicious edits!][The whole internet had to deal with your drama for three days, but it was all secret recordings and manipulated clips! Have some shame!][Get Kelly Smith out o

I read through the online reactions and slowly put down my cup.If anything, Kelly's move was smart. Whatever the truth may be, she had taken the initiative by just telling the public that Stan was supposedly assisting Mia and that Stan threatened to cancel her.By the time Stan's people finally moved to disprove the allegations, they'd find that they didn't have much public goodwill left.Tapping into Twitter, I promptly saw that Stan's studio had convened for an emergency meeting and press conference.I still thought that was too slow, now that their detractors had gained considerable momentum.I looked at Kelly's post again, scrolling down to the comments to see a personal reply from her.[Thank you, everyone. I have further evidence that will be posted later today.]My fingers clenching around my phone, I called Stan, and he answered on the first ring. "Yeah?""Listen—Kelly probably has more evidence, be it screenshots, audio recording, call conversation, or anything you ca

Just a week after life returned to normal, I moved to Block C, where managers and employees lived, as assigned by my agency. The room wasn't big, but it was clean and facing south.I picked up the s I'd previously set aside, I tried auditioning again, with producers willing to give me a chance now that I wasn't being canceled by the internet.I picked a single mother role for a drama series and did good work despite the modest rewards.During the beginning of filming, I saw Stan at the studio, sitting next to the director.Wearing a subtle black T-shirt and jeans, he actually looked like a production staff member. The director beckoned at me excitedly. "Hurry, Mia! Stan here has just agreed to a cameo as your ex-husband! Just one appearance!"I did a double take and turned to Stan, as he stood up and approached me but stopped three feet away."I don't have any ulterior motives," he said very quietly. "The writer is a friend, and he was saying they were short of a male actor, so

Kelly was canceled much quicker than I expected, and it wasn't even Stan's work but the simple backlash resulting from the riverside livestream. The insults she spewed about my mother were edited into short videos and captioned with taglines like 'don't be a Kelly' or 'disgrace to our race', quickly reaching trending and staying there for a day.Her own agency announced her suspension, while several brands terminated their endorsement deals with her she had.Three days after she was knocked off her perch, I returned to the hospital with the money Stan wired to my account, clearing the debts. As the nurse handed me Mom's death certificate, I could only stare at her name on it, staying motionless for a long while until my phone vibrated. It was a text from Stan.[I've arranged everything for your mother's funeral, including the funeral hall. I'll be there with you at ten in the morning tomorrow.]I stared at the text for a couple of beats. [It's fine. I can manage on my own.]Hi

Stan rushed down the riverbank, his clothes soaked through before long and his hair disheveled—hardly the look of a showbiz elite. As he waded through the water, he reached out to grab my wrist. "Curvy… Don't…"I shook his hand off and moved a couple feet away. "Curvy is dead, Mr. Herbert."All color drained out of his face right then. "I-I didn't know it was you. Honest. If I did, then I wouldn't—""Wouldn't what?" I looked him squarely in the eyes as I cut him short. "Wouldn't have kicked me out, canceled me, or called me names in front of everyone?"Stan's lips trembled, but he couldn't say a word.Kelly was left stunned as she watched from the side. "S-Stan? What are you doing?! Why would you apologize to her?!"Stan wheeled on her with a glare right then. "Shut up!"Kelly shuddered from his bellow and promptly kept quiet.Stan then turned toward me, his voice hoarse. "Just give me a chance to make things right, Curvy…"I stared at his crestfallen face, finding all of i
