Chapter 2

Author: I. Winter
Opening my eyes, I found myself staring at a stark-white ceiling and could smell the pungent scent of medicine.

I moved my fingers and saw an IV line inserted into the back of my hand.

"You're finally awake," a voice growled beside my bed.

It was my manager, Tim Johnson, who was scowling as he swiped his phone.

"Tim…" I said, feeling my throat burning.

"Nope. Don't even start," he snorted, dropping his phone on the bedside drawer with a clatter. "You really had to put me through the grinder, didn't you? Stalking Stan Herbert?! Only your mind is capable of such brilliance!"

I tried to push myself up as I quickly said, "No, I wasn't. I was looking for a friend who was living in the same block…"

Tim rolled his eyes and chuckled coolly. "Do you even know who lives in that block?! It's just Stan and a handful of billionaires! You're a C-lister who can't even afford rent, but you're saying you have a friend living there!"

Realizing I couldn't argue my way out of this, I could only bite my already pale lips.

"Anyway, Stan's side is playing hardball now."

Tim growled, standing up to glare downward at me, "He is charging you with stalking and harassment, along with the violation of that showmance agreement. The top brass are furious and ready to terminate your contract."

Just hearing that last part left my mind blank.

"Termination?" I asked, my voice cracking. "The violation clause…"

"Three mil." Tim snorted coolly. "I personally covered your medical bill, but you're done for."

Shaking his head, he started for the door. "They're telling you to move to Block B. It's the only place they'll let you stay for now."

With that, he slammed the door forcefully shut, while I lay down again.

I couldn't even pool together three hundred bucks.

That was when my phone vibrated beside my pillow.

A nurse must have charged it, and the screen lit up.

A red '99+' could be seen on my WhatsApp icon, and I tapped into it to see that it was all texts from Breaker.

[Where are you, babe? Why aren't you answering? Did you have heatstroke?]

[Reply, or I'm really going to call the cops!]

[Why didn't you accept my wire transfer? It was returned automatically.]

[You're scaring me, so stop, okay?]

My cold heart finally found some warmth just reading through them.

The whole world and my own manager might treat me like trash, but there was still one person out there treating me like I was his whole world.

Sniffling, I typed with trembling fingers to reply: [Sorry, my phone broke. Just got it fixed.]

Breaker's reply came instantaneously.

[Finally!]

[Did you know I was worried sick the entire night and almost searched the entire district?!]

[Don't ever ghost me again, you hear?!]

I somehow could imagine his eyes getting puffy and indignant, while feeling more warmth swelling in my chest.

[Gotcha. Won't happen again.]

For a split second, even the abuse I suffered at Stan's hands had healed, as Breaker gave me the feeling I could keep going on as long as I had him.

-

Three days later, I was discharged.

My agency didn't even bother to send a taxi, so I had to drag the suitcase that was kept shut with duct tape and a prayer back to Nox Suites.

There were three blocks.

Block A was for the elite, while Block B was for trainees and washed-up actors.

And for Block B, the paint on the walls was peeling off, and the hallways stank of takeout boxes.

I was assigned a room on the fourteenth floor with only a single bed and a crude closet.

Sighing, I went to open the window, where I had a clear view of Block A.

The two blocks were relatively close enough that one could see laundry hanging outside on the balconies.

I stared at the duplex penthouse where Stan lived.

Night had fallen, and a light was on inside, visible from the window.

Staring at it, I suddenly had a thought and whipped out my phone to text Breaker.

[What's the color of the lights in your house?]

His reply came in just a couple seconds.

[A warm yellow. It's so bright that it'd reach you, wherever you are.]

I looked up sharply through the glass walls of Stan's penthouse through the night.

It really was a warm yellow.

Still, I smiled wryly, shaking my head—I must be losing my mind.

Stan was self-important, cold, and verbally abusive.

There was no way he was my online boyfriend, who always called me 'babe' and had even offered to send me a fortune.

I wore a black suit dress for the press conference, and my hair was tied in a bun.As I stood before dozens of press agencies and calmly introduced the new series, Stan sat silently in the third seat from the left in the second row, completely silent. He didn't hide when the cameras turned to him, even quietly nodding at the stage.During the Q&A session, a press member stood up and asked, "Ms. Luther, what is the nature of your current personal relationship with Mr. Herbert?"Everyone turned silent as they watched me just then.Holding up my microphone, I smiled as I said, "Just to clarify, he is not present as a guest."Stan's fingers curled over his knees. As the cameras all turned sharply toward him, he stood up and started toward the stage. However, he soon paused and stayed below the stage, while everyone stayed silent and quietly filmed everything.Looking into the cameras, he said, "I've hurt Ms. Luther irrevocably over some rumors six months ago. I have no right to as

At exactly eight in the morning the next day, Stan's studio released the complete surveillance footage, showing the woman in red rushing in.Stan stood in her way, while she snapped, "You're a skank just like your mom!"The video was sharp, and the audio was perfectly synchronized with the lip movements, while Eve's outburst was clearly shown to be all her, and Kelly's edits were completely disproved. It blew up before long, with the hashtag #Kellyseviledit topping searches, followed by #Kellylibel. My lawyer also put out a statement that we would be suing Kelly for fabricating libel, causing distress to the bereaved, violating image rights, and disseminating sensitive private information, demanding three million in damages. The replies to Kelly's pinned post went crazy.[Liar! More evidence? More like malicious edits!][The whole internet had to deal with your drama for three days, but it was all secret recordings and manipulated clips! Have some shame!][Get Kelly Smith out o

I read through the online reactions and slowly put down my cup.If anything, Kelly's move was smart. Whatever the truth may be, she had taken the initiative by just telling the public that Stan was supposedly assisting Mia and that Stan threatened to cancel her.By the time Stan's people finally moved to disprove the allegations, they'd find that they didn't have much public goodwill left.Tapping into Twitter, I promptly saw that Stan's studio had convened for an emergency meeting and press conference.I still thought that was too slow, now that their detractors had gained considerable momentum.I looked at Kelly's post again, scrolling down to the comments to see a personal reply from her.[Thank you, everyone. I have further evidence that will be posted later today.]My fingers clenching around my phone, I called Stan, and he answered on the first ring. "Yeah?""Listen—Kelly probably has more evidence, be it screenshots, audio recording, call conversation, or anything you ca

Just a week after life returned to normal, I moved to Block C, where managers and employees lived, as assigned by my agency. The room wasn't big, but it was clean and facing south.I picked up the s I'd previously set aside, I tried auditioning again, with producers willing to give me a chance now that I wasn't being canceled by the internet.I picked a single mother role for a drama series and did good work despite the modest rewards.During the beginning of filming, I saw Stan at the studio, sitting next to the director.Wearing a subtle black T-shirt and jeans, he actually looked like a production staff member. The director beckoned at me excitedly. "Hurry, Mia! Stan here has just agreed to a cameo as your ex-husband! Just one appearance!"I did a double take and turned to Stan, as he stood up and approached me but stopped three feet away."I don't have any ulterior motives," he said very quietly. "The writer is a friend, and he was saying they were short of a male actor, so

Kelly was canceled much quicker than I expected, and it wasn't even Stan's work but the simple backlash resulting from the riverside livestream. The insults she spewed about my mother were edited into short videos and captioned with taglines like 'don't be a Kelly' or 'disgrace to our race', quickly reaching trending and staying there for a day.Her own agency announced her suspension, while several brands terminated their endorsement deals with her she had.Three days after she was knocked off her perch, I returned to the hospital with the money Stan wired to my account, clearing the debts. As the nurse handed me Mom's death certificate, I could only stare at her name on it, staying motionless for a long while until my phone vibrated. It was a text from Stan.[I've arranged everything for your mother's funeral, including the funeral hall. I'll be there with you at ten in the morning tomorrow.]I stared at the text for a couple of beats. [It's fine. I can manage on my own.]Hi

Stan rushed down the riverbank, his clothes soaked through before long and his hair disheveled—hardly the look of a showbiz elite. As he waded through the water, he reached out to grab my wrist. "Curvy… Don't…"I shook his hand off and moved a couple feet away. "Curvy is dead, Mr. Herbert."All color drained out of his face right then. "I-I didn't know it was you. Honest. If I did, then I wouldn't—""Wouldn't what?" I looked him squarely in the eyes as I cut him short. "Wouldn't have kicked me out, canceled me, or called me names in front of everyone?"Stan's lips trembled, but he couldn't say a word.Kelly was left stunned as she watched from the side. "S-Stan? What are you doing?! Why would you apologize to her?!"Stan wheeled on her with a glare right then. "Shut up!"Kelly shuddered from his bellow and promptly kept quiet.Stan then turned toward me, his voice hoarse. "Just give me a chance to make things right, Curvy…"I stared at his crestfallen face, finding all of i
