It had been 45 hours since she gave us 48 to find those who were responsible for Alek’s death, but they had all disappeared. And I mean disappeared. We followed their scents back to Andresky’s territory, where the trail went cold. It was as if they had been taken away by the Goddess herself. He slowed to a stop, gently tugging me to a halt beside him, and took me into his arms. After a long moment of just holding each other, I tilted my head back to look up at him.“Is there any way we can survive this?” he asked me finally.I sighed as my shoulders slumped. “I don’t know, Galen. I really don’t. I have never seen her like this. She has always been ferocious, but this is on an entirely different level. I was there when Jonas used and then rejected her. She was broken for a few days, and then her anger took over. But even during those moments, she was just broken. Cracked.” I ran my fingers through his hair
As the world around me began to blur again as it sped past, I turned to face the Goddess. “I thought he was a vampire, but he’s a shifter?” I asked curiously.“No. He’s a hybrid. He has been around long enough to be able to mask whichever side he doesn’t want people to know exists. He’s spent the last 2,000 years rejecting the mates I have given him. Up until he rejected Tawnie, he never looked back.” She tilted her head as she studied my face. “When I created her, she was meant to be the most important creation I’ve ever made. People will want to seek her out. That’s why I made her the way she is. I didn’t want anyone to be able to kill her. Not even her mate.” She glanced at me. “Or mates.”I clenched my jaw. “What does that mean? Is he a threat to my mate?” I growled. She tilted Her head as She looked at me. “Do you think he’s a threat to her?”The muscle in my jaw ticked. “If he is, then you need to send me back so I can protect her and our child!”“Ah, yes. Your little girl. She
I turned to follow the Goddess as She walked away, trying to focus solely on Her retreating back as image after image sped past me in a blur. As She slowed, so did the scenes flying by until we were standing beside a large clearing, where an obviously younger Tawnie stood surrounded by several dozen men and women who were all watching her almost hungrily. Seeing them look at her like that sent a pang of jealousy through my heart. A couple walked up to her, holding hands. The man cupped her face while the woman took her hand.“We hope you find your mate, sweetheart. We’ll see you in three days. Enjoy the mate search and don’t leave until we come back for you,” her father said before stepping closer and lowering his voice. “Stay vigilant, Tawn Tawn. You can’t trust anyone here. Not truly.” He glanced to the left before sighing. “Not even Orion. Not fully.”She smiled up at him, making my heart pound wildly. She always had such a beautiful smile that never failed to instantly bring me to
AlekI looked down at Tawnie from my place beside the Goddess. I knew that she would be angry, broken, and filled with guilt, but I hadn’t expected this level of fury. When she walked back into the casino, all of her employees, shifter and human, fled from her. She exuded such an intense, dominant, murderous aura that even Storm was casting her small, worried glances while my brother, who had been waiting by the door for the women to arrive, trailed behind the two of them. Even in the afterlife, I could feel how truly predatory her actions and aura were. If I were there with them and wasn’t Tawnie’s mate, I would have been shitting my pants too. The thing about vampires, as every shifter knew, was that they were unpredictable. Vampires would tell you that they loved you, truly meaning it while they simultaneously ripped your throat out.I watched sadly as she walked up to the third floor, where Andre and his people had been told to stay during their stay. She took a deep breath, inhal
GalenAfter Alek cut our link, I immediately started pacing back and forth while Storm watched me curiously from the bed.“Was that Alek?” she finally asked, making me stiffen.“Yeah,” I grumbled as I resumed pacing.I heard the bedsprings creak as she climbed off the bed to slowly approach me. “What did he say?”I shook my head. “Nothing.”She slammed both of her hands into my back, sending me flying forward. “Look here, asshole! You have two seconds to tell me what he said, or I will go find Tawnie and make her tell me what’s going on!”I rolled over to glare up at her. “I swore not to intervene!”She stiffened as her eyes darkened with anger. “Not to intervene? WHAT IN THE HELL IS GOING ON?!” When all I did was stare at her defiantly, she threw her hands up in frustration. “Fine! Tawnie, it is!”She grabbed a bathrobe off the hook beside the door before rushing out of the apartment with me hot on her heels.“Storm, wait! Please! You shouldn’t do this! It’s going to ruin everything!
AlekI woke up to a faint, barely there, strange scent lingering in the air in our room. As I discreetly scanned the room, I lay still with my muscles coiling in anticipation of an attack. Finding no threat, I sat up and took a deep breath, trying to find the source of the new scent. That was what made me so good at my job. My sense of smell was better than anyone else's, and it had saved my life at least a hundred times. When the scent trail led me to my beautiful sleeping mate, I stared at her in shock. I knew she hadn't left the bed while I was asleep, so I was confused for a moment about how her scent could have shifted. I started at the top of her hair, slowly making my way lower as I tried to determine where exactly the scent was coming from. When I reached her belly button, I was hit with the scent full-on. I lay my head on her stomach, smiling to myself as I gently stroked it.Now I knew why the Goddess had put it on my heart to retire. She was giving me everything that a rogu
