They threw me into a cage in Colin's dungeons.

Not a cell. A cage.

Like an animal.

The iron bars were barely wide enough for me to sit with my knees pulled to my chest. The floor was cold stone, damp with moisture and goddess knew what else. The only light came from a single torch in the corridor, casting dancing shadows that looked like demons on the walls.

I was still wearing the burgundy dress, now torn and soaked with Ares's blood. His blood. I could smell itcopper and earth and something uniquely him. My hands were stained with it, dark under my fingernails.

"He saved me," I whispered to the darkness. "Why did he save me?"

The mate bond pulsed in answer. Still there. Still alive.

But so weak. So terribly weak.

I pressed my hand to my chest, feeling the fragile thread of connection between us. Each pulse came slower than the last, more labored.

"Don't you dare die," I whispered. "You don't get to save me and then die. That's not how this works."

But the bond continued to fade.

Ares built up the fire again while I watched from the bed, in furs. When he finally joined me, sliding under the covers, there was something different in his eyes. Something intense and almost desperate. "Leah," he said, my name a prayer and a plea. "Yes?" "I need you to know something." His hand came up to cup my face. "Tomorrow, we go back. Back to the complications and the conflicts and all of it. But tonight" His thumb traced my lower lip. "Tonight, I want to memorize you. Every sound, every touch, every moment. So that no matter what happens, I'll always have this." The words were so raw, so honest, they made my chest ache. "Then memorize me," I whispered. "And let me memorize you too." He kissed me then, slow and deep and full of things we couldn't say out loud. I love you. I'm terrified. I don't want to lose this. I don't want to lose you. All of it poured through the bond, through his touch, through the way he held me like I was both precious and fragile. When he fin

I woke to golden afternoon light streaming through the windows.Ares was beside me, one arm draped across my waist, his face peaceful in sleep. The furs were tangled around us, evidence of… everything.I should have felt guilty. Should have thought about my father, about the plant I hadn’t taken today, about the complications waiting back at the castle.Instead, I just felt… happy.Safe.Cherished.Like maybe, just maybe, this could be real.Ares stirred, his eyes opening slowly. When he saw me watching him, a sleepy smile crossed his face.“Hi,” he murmured.“Hi.”“How long was I asleep?”“Not long.” I traced patterns on his bare chest, following the lines of his scars. “An hour maybe?”“Mm.” He pulled me closer, pressing a kiss to my forehead. “Best sleep I’ve had in years.”We lay like that for a while, just being together. No words necessary. Just the sound of our breathing, the crackle of the dying fire, the distant call of birds outside. Finally, reluctantly, Ares stirred.“We s

The blanket slipped from my shoulders and pooled at my feet like liquid moonlight.Ares stood frozen, water still clinging to the dark strands of his hair, each droplet catching the firelight and throwing tiny prisms across the sharp planes of his face. His chest rose and fell in uneven breaths, the sculpted ridges of muscle glistening faintly where lake water traced paths down to the waistband of his soaked jeans. A single bead clung to the hollow of his throat, trembling with every heartbeat before it finally broke free and slid beneath the collar of his discarded shirt.I stepped forward, bare feet sinking into the thick fur rug, the chill of the lake still clinging to my skin like a second pulse. The air between us thickened, heavy with woodsmoke and the clean, mineral scent of the water we’d left behind. His voice came low, almost reverent. “Leah.”I pressed two fingers to his lipssoft, swollen from earlier kissesand felt the warmth of his exhale. “No words yet. Just this.”A slo

LeahAres led me outside, down to the lake shore. There, half-hidden in the tall grass, was a small wooden dock."My father and I built this together," Ares said quietly. "Spent one whole summer measuring, cutting, hammering. My mother said we were ridiculous, that we could just swim from the shore. But my father insisted we needed a proper dock for fishing.""Did you fish often?""Every morning." He smiled at the memory. "I'd wake up at dawn, and he'd already be here waiting. We'd sit in silence mostly, just being together. Some of my best memories are those quiet mornings with him."He sat on the edge of the dock, dangling his feet over the water. I joined him, our shoulders touching."Do you still fish?" I asked."Not in years." He stared out at the lake. "This placeI've barely come here since I lost them. It hurt too much to be here without them.""But you brought me.""Yeah." He turned to look at me, and his eyes were impossibly soft. "I did.""Why?"He was quiet for a long moment
