Chapter 2

Author: Midsummer
Celine claimed I had only gone into medicine to get close to a so-called genius from our university. "That guy is the university heartthrob. Since the two of them are always together, maybe she has already fallen for him."

Galen believed every word of it. No matter how much I explained, he brushed it all aside as excuses, picking fights with me day after day.

"What hereditary disease are you talking about? Those are just rumors people spread!

"If nothing's going on between you, then why did he drive you home?"

At that time, I had the chance to study abroad. I had heard there were cases in South Anrium. The slots were limited, and I didn't have time to argue with him. I left him a note and followed my senior overseas.

Three years later, when I returned, Galen acted as if none of it had ever happened. He proposed the moment we saw each other again.

I thought he had let go of our old fights. I was overjoyed and threw myself into preparing for the wedding.

However, I was wrong. It was revenge. Even now, he still believed I had betrayed him.

Yet, just moments ago, I noticed his bloodshot eyes. That was the first sign of the disease taking hold.

The jeers of the crowd still rang in my ears when the bodyguards dragged me, bloodied and battered, into the basement.

One of them pulled out a phone, turning on a livestream and forcing me to watch. "You can't be there in person, but you can still witness it. These are orders straight from Mr. Shaw," one of them sneered.

On the screen, Galen slid the ring onto Celine's finger. It was the same ring he had once designed for me. My chest tightened with pain.

I tried to look away, but a guard clamped my head still and pried my eyelids open. "Mr. Shaw said you're not to miss a single second. Don't even think about closing your eyes!"

"Galen, must you humiliate me like this?" I thought.

The wedding march played as my tears spilled over. Through the blur, I noticed his eyes again, which were more bloodshot than before.

I had sworn I would leave him, but as a doctor, I couldn't ignore what I saw. Saving lives was my duty.

Swallowing my grief, I forced myself to speak. "Galen's hereditary disease is already showing symptoms. If he doesn't get treated, it'll only speed up the onset. You'd better tell him to get a full examination immediately!"

The bodyguards froze, then burst into laughter. "Still trying to trick us? I've worked for the Shaw family for years, and I've never heard of any genetic disease. Maybe you fooled Mr. Shaw, but you won't fool us."

Pain shot through my crushed fingers, but I gritted my teeth and warned them anyway. "With his temper, if you delay his treatment and he finds out, none of you will walk away alive!"

The guards faltered. Unease flashed across their faces. Just as one was about to run off, the door swung open.

"Nobody leaves this room! If anyone ruins this wedding, I'll make them pay!" Albert Swift, Galen's assistant, stormed in. His expression was dark. The bodyguards shrank back immediately.

"Mr. Shaw and your niece make the perfect couple. Who'd dare to ruin the wedding?" one flatterer chimed in.

His words made me freeze. "Albert, is Celine your niece?"

The truth hit me like a blow. When I had gone abroad, Galen had been too angry to answer my calls. He had blocked every way I had to reach him. Desperate, I had written a letter and entrusted it to the man he trusted most, Albert.

Little did I know, he was Celine's uncle!

The realization must have shown on my face, because Albert's expression twisted. He lashed out with a vicious kick to my stomach. "If it weren't for you, Celine would've married into money years ago! That department manager's position should've been mine!"

His features contorted with rage as he stomped down hard on my already mangled hand. "This is all your fault! You ruined everything for me!"

The pain was so blinding that I almost fainted.

I heard the sharp crack of breaking bones. My heart seized with terror. My hands were the most precious thing I had.

The first thing Galen did when he woke up was ask to see me.When I appeared, he studied me for a long while before finally asking, "Back then, you went to study medicine to save me, right?"I honestly didn't know how he could still ask such a question at a time like this. "You know the truth in your heart. You just never wanted to admit you were wrong. Only if you believed I had cheated would your betrayal with Celine seem insignificant."My words hit the mark. A flicker of regret and shame crossed his eyes. His voice was barely a whisper as he asked, "Do you feel anything for Jacob romantically?"I stayed silent. Even if I hadn't understood his feelings before, after everything, I had at least a hint. However, now, my heart was set entirely on medicine. There was no room for a new relationship. So, even when Jacob had subtly tested my feelings a few times, I politely but firmly ignored it. Facing Galen's expectant gaze, I answered honestly. "No. I only feel the bond of a seni

Warmth spread through me. Even though Jacob rarely spoke, he had quietly helped me countless times since I began studying medicine. I felt lucky to have a mentor like him. Just as I was thinking of how to repay him, the door suddenly burst open."So you're still going to pretend nothing's happening between you two? You were almost holding hands! While I've been abroad, you've been enjoying your little world, huh?" Galen stormed in. His pale, gaunt face was twisted with resentment.I flinched at his appearance. Less than a month had passed since his illness first manifested, yet he looked like a completely different person – emaciated, clothes hanging loosely, and deep shadows carved under his eyes. It seemed that even abroad, he hadn't found a cure. Before he could hurl more insults, Jenny stepped forward to block him. Reluctantly, she bowed her head and spoke in a soft, pleading tone. "Sabrina, only you can save him now. I was wrong before. I shouldn't have yelled at you. Y

However, he had it wrong. I wasn't about to let public opinion force me to swallow this injustice. What I had earned through my own skill was mine alone, and no one had the right to slander it."Dr. Bingley, I know you're jealous. After all, you've had the most surgical errors in the entire hospital. You may not have received plaques from patients, but you've been cursed at far more than I have," I said."How dare you!" Julian's face flushed red. He opened his mouth, but no words came. Every point I made was a fact. Some of the hospital staff fell silent. They were afraid to provoke me further. The hospital had already been dragged into several scandals due to public scrutiny. I had been preparing to resign, not wanting my presence to bring them more trouble, when the family of a patient I had once saved posted a testimonial online."Dr. Robinson is the most responsible doctor I've ever met! She stood by the operating table for 26 hours straight to save my son. When we couldn't

Celine dabbed at her tears again. Her voice trembled. "You've already ruined Galen's life, and now you're cursing my son too! "That night, he saw his dad collapse in front of him. He was terrified, and he's been having a slight fever for the past two days."My heart skipped a beat. A high fever was often an early sign of disease onset. The boy was only two. He was too young, too fragile. I warned her as gently as I could. "You should take him to the hospital immediately for a full checkup. Early intervention might make a difference…"Before I could finish, Galen cut me off with a cold laugh. "Are you talking about the hereditary disease again? Sabrina, how long are you planning to keep up this act?"Are you not satisfied with tormenting me? Do you have to meddle with my son too?"His gaze was filled with contempt. "I can't believe I never realized what a cruel woman you are!"When I mentioned her grandson, Jenny nearly lost her mind. She started screaming and threatening to ca

"Sabrina, are you so eager to bring your lover here just to mock me? Get out! All of you, get out!" He hurled everything on the table at us. Jacob shielded me as we left the room. His calm voice carried a subtle edge of disgust. "Do you really want to save someone like that?" he asked.I glanced at my hands and replied evenly, "As Sabrina, I can hate him. But as a doctor, healing the sick is my duty."After some persuasion from the medical team, Galen finally calmed down. Yet, the moment he saw Jacob and me again, he couldn't help but taunt me. "I should have destroyed your hands completely. You'd never touch a scalpel in your life!"His hateful gaze stabbed at me, and the bones in my still-healing hands throbbed. However, he was wrong. Even if I could no longer hold a scalpel, I could still write patient charts and continue my work.Jenny nearly lunged at me when she realized I was there. "It's that curse of a woman! Galen was healthy before marrying her, and now he's dying! "I

Celine turned pale with fright. She even forgot to call an ambulance as she continued berating me.Just as she was about to strike, the front door burst open. Nearly frozen solid, I was finally swept into a warm embrace. Jacob looked at me, battered and bruised, and a flicker of pain crossed his eyes. "I'm sorry I'm late."The ambulance rushed both me and Galen to the hospital. Under the doctors' careful treatment, my fingers were painstakingly reattached. Looking at my hands that were wrapped tightly like little bundles, Jacob's voice became cold. "Your bones are reconnected, but… you probably won't be able to hold a scalpel again."I felt a pang of sorrow, but I had prepared myself mentally. After years in surgery, I knew exactly how severe my injuries were. I paused and spoke like I was talking to myself. "If I can't operate, I can still save lives in other ways."I had studied medicine for years. Even if I couldn't perform surgery, I could still use my knowledge to help p
