Chloe called an emergency family meeting the next morning.

I walked into the main living room and found her standing in the center of the rug, phone still in her hand, face glowing.

Dominic sat in the armchair near the window. Julian leaned against the fireplace with his arms crossed. Both of them looked at her like they already knew something was coming.

“I have news,” Chloe said.

Dominic’s voice was calm. “What kind of news?”

She took a breath and smiled so wide it almost hurt to look at. “I’m engaged.”

The room went completely still.

Julian was the first to speak. “To who?”

“Marcus. We’ve been talking for months. He asked last night. I said yes.” She held up her hand. A simple diamond caught the light.

Dominic stood slowly. “Chloe.”

“I know it’s fast,” she said, still smiling. “But it feels right. And I want the wedding here. At the estate. In one week.”

My stomach dropped.

Dominic’s face didn’t change, but something in his eyes went cold. “One week.”

“Yes. Small. Just family and close friends. I already talked to the planner. She can make it work.” Chloe turned to me. “Naomi, you’re my maid of honor. Please say yes.”

I opened my mouth. Nothing came out at first. “Of course,” I managed. “Of course I will.”

Julian pushed off the fireplace. “This is sudden even for you, Chloe.”

“I don’t care.” She looked at her father. “Dad, please. I want this. I want it here. With the people I love.”

Dominic was quiet for a long time. Then he nodded once. “Alright.”

Chloe squealed and threw her arms around him. He hugged her back, but his eyes found mine over her shoulder. The look in them was pure tension.

The next few hours turned into chaos. Chloe dragged me upstairs to start talking dresses and flowers and timelines. Julian disappeared somewhere with a bottle of something. Dominic went into his study and closed the door.

Around mid-afternoon I slipped outside to get air. I found Dominic standing by the pool again, phone pressed to his ear. He ended the call when he saw me.

“One week,” he said.

“I know.”

“The house is going to be full of people. Planners. Florists. Caterers. My brother is already sniffing around.”

I wrapped my arms around myself. “We’ll be careful.”

He stepped closer. “Careful isn’t going to be enough. Not with this many eyes.”

“What do you want me to do?”

“I want you to remember what’s at stake.” His voice was low and rough. “Chloe. The custody case. Everything.”

“I haven’t forgotten.”

He looked at me like he wanted to say more. Instead he just shook his head and walked back toward the house.

That evening Chloe insisted on a celebration dinner. She invited two of her closest friends. The dining room felt too loud and too bright. Julian sat next to me and kept making comments that only I seemed to catch.

“Maid of honor,” he said quietly while Chloe was laughing with her friends. “That’s a big job. Lots of late nights planning. Lots of reasons to be alone with the father of the bride.”

I kept my eyes on my plate. “Stop.”

“Just saying. Secrets have a way of coming out when the pressure’s high.”

Dominic’s voice cut across the table. “Julian. Enough.”

Julian raised his glass in a mock toast. “Just making conversation, brother.”

After dinner I helped clear the table while Chloe and her friends went to the living room to look at venue photos. Julian wandered off. Dominic stayed in the kitchen with me.

We worked in silence until the last plate was in the dishwasher.

He closed it and turned. “This wedding is going to put us under a microscope.”

“I know.”

“If anyone sees something—”

“They won’t.”

He moved closer. Close enough that I had to tip my head back to meet his eyes.

“I meant what I said about not touching you again,” he said. “But every time I look at you I forget why.”

My pulse hammered in my throat. “Then stop looking.”

“I can’t.”

The confession hung between us, heavy and dangerous.

From the living room Chloe called my name.

Dominic stepped back instantly. By the time she appeared in the doorway, he was already pouring himself a glass of water like nothing had happened.

“Naomi, come look at these centerpiece ideas,” she said. “You’re better at this than I am.”

I followed her out of the kitchen. Behind me I felt Dominic’s eyes on my back the entire way.

Later that night, after Chloe’s friends left and the house finally went quiet, I was in the guest house trying to sleep when my phone buzzed.

A text from an unknown number.

Meet me by the pool. Now.

I knew who it was.

I pulled on a hoodie and stepped outside. The night was cool. Dominic stood near the deep end, hands in his pockets, waiting.

I walked up to him. “This is a bad idea.”

“I know.”

“Then why am I here?”

He looked at me for a long time. The only light came from the soft underwater lamps, turning his face half gold, half shadow.

“Because I can’t do this,” he said. “I can’t watch you walk around this house for the next seven days pretending you’re just my daughter’s friend. Not after what happened. Not with Julian watching. Not with Chloe planning a wedding under the same roof.”

My voice came out smaller than I wanted. “What are you saying?”

He stepped closer until there was almost no space left between us.

“I’m saying the rules I made don’t work anymore.” His hand came up and brushed a strand of hair from my face. The touch was light, but it felt like a brand. “And I’m starting to stop caring about the consequences.”

Somewhere in the main house a light flicked on in an upstairs window.

We both froze.

Dominic’s hand dropped. His eyes stayed locked on mine.

“Go back inside,” he said, voice rough. “Before someone sees us.”

I turned and walked away on unsteady legs.

I didn’t look back.

But I felt him watching me the entire way to the guest-house door.

And I knew, with a certainty that scared me, that whatever line we’d been trying to hold was already gone.

  • Ruined: My best friend's father is my new obsession    Take Your Time

“I love you, Naomi.”The words landed between us and stayed there.I didn’t move. My body was still under his skin damp, breathe uneven. He was looking at me like he had just put something irreversible on the table.I opened my mouth. Nothing came out.Dominic rested his forehead against mine, then pulled back enough to see my face.“I love you,” he said again, quieter. “You don’t have to say it back. Take your time.”My throat felt tight. “Dominic…”“I mean it.” His thumb brushed my cheek. “I’m not asking for anything right now. I just needed you to know.”He eased out of me and rolled onto his side. I stayed on my back, staring at the ceiling. The silence that followed was thick. After a while, he pulled the sheet over both of us. His hand found mine underneath and held it.“I’ve been holding that in longer than I should have,” he said.I turned my head toward him. “Why now?”“Because we’re alone. Because for once, no one is about to walk in. And because pretending this is only phys

  • Ruined: My best friend's father is my new obsession    Say It

By the third day alone, we stopped pretending we had any control left.It started in the late afternoon. I walked into the living room to find him standing near the window, phone in hand. He looked up. That was all it took. The phone went down on the table. I crossed the room. His mouth was on mine before either of us spoke. We kissed like we were already behind. Hands under clothes. Breathing uneven. He backed me toward the couch, but I put a hand on his chest and stopped him.“Not yet,” I said. His eyes darkened. “No?”“You first.”I stepped back from him and reached for the hem of my top. He watched without moving. I pulled it off slowly, then unhooked my bra and let it fall. His jaw tightened. I pushed my shorts down next, stepping out of them, until I stood in front of him in nothing but my underwear.“Take the rest off,” he said. His voice was low. “Strip for me.”I hooked my fingers into the waistband and slid them down my legs. When I straightened, I was completely bare. He lo

  • Ruined: My best friend's father is my new obsession    No More Careful

By the second full day alone, something in both of us loosened. There was no performance left. No checking the hallway. No timing our conversations around other people’s footsteps. The staff came in the morning and left by early afternoon. After that the estate belonged to us.I found him in the study just after three. He was standing near the window with a file in his hand, but he put it down the moment he saw me.“Come here,” he said.I closed the door behind me. He met me halfway and kissed me hard, walking me backward until my thighs hit the edge of his desk. Papers shifted. A pen rolled and fell to the floor. He didn’t care.He turned me around, planted my hands on the desk, and pulled my underwear down. I heard the sound of his belt. Then he pushed inside me from behind in one smooth thrust. I dropped my head and moaned into my arm.“Fuck,” he muttered. His hands gripped my hips. “You have no idea how many times I thought about doing this in here.”He fucked me against the desk

  • Ruined: My best friend's father is my new obsession    The Morning After Silence

I woke up to the weight of his arm across my waist. For a few seconds I didn’t move. The guest house was still dark enough that the edges of the room felt soft. Dominic’s breathing was steady against the back of my neck. His bare chest pressed to my spine. One of his legs had tangled with mine during the night. We had never stayed the whole night before.I carefully shifted. His arm tightened for a second, then relaxed as he woke.“You’re still here,” I said quietly.“Where else would I go?” His voice was rough with sleep. “The house is empty.”He pressed a kiss to my shoulder. Then another, lower. His hand slid from my waist to my stomach, then down between my legs. I was still sensitive from the night before, but my body reacted anyway. A small sound left my mouth when his fingers found me wet.“Dominic…”“Let me.”He turned me onto my back and kissed me slow and deep while his fingers worked in soft circles. There was no rush in him this time. He watched my face as he touched me, l

  • Ruined: My best friend's father is my new obsession    Alone at Last

The house was quiet in a way it hadn’t been for weeks. No extra footsteps, no voices in the hallway, no one left to interrupt. I stayed in the guest house until past nine, telling myself I would sleep early. Instead, I kept listening to the silence, knowing he was only a short walk away.A knock came just after nine-thirty.I opened the door. Dominic stood there in a dark shirt, with his sleeves rolled and his eyes already on me like he had been holding himself back all day.He stepped inside. I closed the door. The lock clicked. For a second, neither of us spoke. Then he kissed me.It wasn’t careful. It was deep and hungry, it was the kind of kiss that carried everything we had been swallowing for days, the cancelled wedding, the empty house, the way we had been circling each other since Chloe left. My back hit the wall. His hands gripped my waist. I pulled at his shirt until he broke the kiss only long enough to drag it over his head.We moved toward the bed without talking. Our clo

  • Ruined: My best friend's father is my new obsession    Nothing is Finished

Julian found me in the hallway near the guest wing just before noon.I had been carrying a folded tablecloth back to the storage closet when he stepped into my path. He didn’t look hurried. He looked settled, like he had already decided how the conversation would go.“I’m leaving this afternoon,” he said.I waited.“Since the wedding is no longer holding, there's no reason to stay and watch my brother play house.” His tone stayed light. “So I’ll give you the short version.”“I don’t need a version from you.”“You do.” He glanced down the empty hallway, then back at me. “Victoria is still waiting. The wedding delay bought you both a little time. That time is almost used up.”I shifted the tablecloth in my arms. “If you’re leaving, then leave.”“I will.” He smiled without warmth. “But absence doesn’t mean silence. I still have what I have. The photos, the timing, and it's enough to make Chloe ask questions she doesn’t want answers to.”“You’ve said this already.”“And I’m saying it again
