Kathryn’s POV
After I rang the doorbell, I heard a few rushing footsteps and grunting before the door opened, and the wind swiped at my face.
“Oh, Kathryn!” My best friend Emily hugged me so tight I could barely breathe, but I was happy to finally be able to see a friend after a very long time of being confined in Reinhardt’s villa. “I’ve been waiting for years,” she sobbed and I whimpered between the curves of her shoulders, somewhat relieved I found myself here.
“Well, that took me a long time. But enough of that!” I wiped my own tears with the back of my hand. “I’m finally here–at least temporarily. Mom wants me to get home as soon as I can.”
Emily gathered my hand, her eyes moist. “I can understand why she’s in a rush, but stay as long as you need, Kathy. Don’t you dare go back to that horrible place!”
My phone suddenly rang.
“Why does he keep calling you?” Emily exclaimed after she placed a cup of tea on the table across from me. “If he already has his side chick, he should just continue on what he was doing from the start, and lay off your back already!”
I sighed and placed a hand on my belly. “I don’t know about that, but we’ll only know more once I answer this call.”
“Oh, no! You’ve fallen prey again to that demon’s antics! I’ll tell this to you now, Kathryn, and I’ll tell it again: he’s a poisonous mushroom you refused to stop eating!” She crossed her arms and huffed a breath. “I hate him more than you do, and that’s clearly showing, am I right?”
I nodded in agreement and moved my thumb down the answer button of my phone. I immediately held up my hand when Emily protested, and mouthed, “Just this once, okay?”
She muttered a curse and I braced myself for what Wilhelm had to say.
“If you want to talk, you can do it with my lawyer.”
“Your lawyer isn’t my wife,” my soon-to-be ex-husband started. “And I’m telling you right now that I’m not divorcing you! And if you still insist on going ahead with this, I’d be forced to audit every expense you made on my account for the last three years, and turn it into some form of compensation that you need to pay me for the rest of your life. Do you really want to be that miserable?”
I frowned. At this rate, he was beyond redemption.
“Like I said, name the price, and I’d pay it in installments, Wilhelm. It’s that easy.”
“What if I don’t agree to the settlement’s mode of payment? You think you’ll not wound up in jail instead?”
I bit my lip, my eyebrows crunching at his words. “You know what, Wilhelm? Do whatever the hell you want. I’d rather go to jail than refuse to divorce you.”
And with that, I slammed my phone shut and tossed it on the floor.
Emily stood and clapped her hands together. “That’s the way it should be done,” she said as she kicked the phone and disregarded it on the carpet. “I’d gladly buy you a new one in commemoration of what you did just now. I’m so glad it turned out this way!”
I grinned, my shoulders feeling light after I freed myself from Wilhelm’s shackles he’d unwillingly wrapped on my neck. “Alright. Are we going to get a new phone or what?”

“Did he finally sign it?” I gripped Emily’s hand as I awaited my lawyer’s answer.
She slipped the paper my way. “Congratulations, Mrs. Reinhardt. He finally did.”
“Thank god!” I exclaimed that I suddenly stood from my seat. This was the second congratulations I heard in a while that somehow made me feel good about myself. I can’t believe I’m finally free from him. Although I appeared cheerful right now, I still couldn’t help the tiny amount of sadness I felt at how fast he seemed eager to leave me.
“Easy there,” Emily pulled me back down to my chair. “Your twins, remember?”
I rubbed my belly. “They’re here, and they’re growing fussy everyday.”
“Mr. Reinhardt sends you his regards,” my lawyer added, and I looked confused for a second.
Then, she slid to me what looked to be a bank check.
“What’s that?” Emily inquired curiously.
I took it with shaking hands. My eyes widened, and I immediately gave it back to my lawyer. “I’m not taking that.”
“It’s two million yuan, Mrs. Reinhardt, and your now ex-husband wanted you to know that he still—”
“Call me Kathryn instead. And I don’t care how big of an amount that is. I’m still not accepting it.”
“Would you call me an idiot if I told you’re making a grave mistake right now?” Emily added.
“What?” I said in disbelief. “You’re the one who told me how much you despise him more than I did! So why do I need to accept his money when clearly, he’s done nothing but to make my life miserable for the past years and even up to the last day of us being husband and wife?”
“There was no money involved before, in a way. Think of all the things you could do with it! Maybe you could even continue your studies abroad!”
I stopped for a while, thinking through her words. “I hate to admit it, but you’re really making sense right now.”
Emily seemed right. My father had long dreamed of restoring the hotel we once owned, but was forced to sell it due to bankruptcy by my mother and stepfather. We had the same dream, and as I stared at the bank check in front of me, I couldn’t help but think of getting those dreams in motion again.
“Come on,” Emily wiggled her eyebrows. “It’s worth the shot.”
The lawyer smiled at me. “I know I’m not in the position to speak, but whatever you think is right, take it.”
I nodded my head earnestly and became convinced I deserved this amount even though it didn’t cover all the things his family had done to me.
“I would use it wisely,” I thought as I began to note things in my mind about my plan to continue my studies in Hotel Management somewhere in Europe. This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that could be the key to building my life and reaching for my dreams.
Come to think of it, I never really got the chance to pursue my degree ever since I dropped out of college due to financial problems. Wilhelm didn’t want me to join his company either, so I was left to be his homemaker.
Not that I held it in low regard. I absolutely salute these people who manage their households, especially when their husbands are there to support them. However, I didn’t like the part where Wilhelm had to abandon me like I was in complete confinement.
Mother placed a few biscuits and a cup of tea in front of me, wearing a frown that accentuated the fine lines on her face. Beside her sat my stepfather, who also wore a similar expression, though he attempted to appear more relaxed than my mother ever did. The room filled with the scent of jasmine and honey, a welcome relief for my stomach after a long day at my lawyer’s office.“I can’t believe you did it,” Mother finally spoke, her eyes solemn as they gazed upon me in disappointment, yet she didn’t look much older either from the new color of her hair. “News traveled fast about your decision to divorce Wilhelm, and I’m sure your father in heaven wouldn’t like it either. His efforts to get you married off to a capable man had all gone to waste.”I arched an eyebrow as I took a sip from my cup. “When he’s clearly the one who placed our feet in a surmountable amount of debt? Yeah, sure.” “How can you speak that way to your deceased father!” Mother exclaimed, her face flushing with co
Kathryn’s POVSeven months later…“Au revoir, and great work everyone,” my professor gathered all of his things as he looked at us with vigor. “I’ll see you tomorrow, same time,” his eyes lingered my way. Nodding, I flashed him a smile before I sank into my seat, my huge belly protruding from the table as my classmates dispersed outside of the classroom. Life was never the same again, and I can say that I enjoyed the days that counted down to my twins’ upcoming birth, pulling all-nighters whenever exams came up, or just simply laying on the couch whenever I felt extremely sleepy throughout the day. At times, my mind would drift back to the days of my marriage, but seeing the results of my studies and moving to Paris quickly pushed those thoughts aside. My divorce with Wilhelm was going smoothly, and I never heard another word from him again. I smirked. I mean, how could I? When I basically threw my old life away, and shielded my present from both his family and mine. It was the be
Kathryn’s POVExam week is over, and I personally think I did well in most of my subjects. It was already dark when I decided to go home from school. While I walk in silence, I can’t shake Roland’s words out of my mind, even though I know to myself that I should be focusing on my exam results instead.I didn’t doubt for one second that Roland would’ve taken good care of me and my children like they were his own blood. But I still couldn’t drag him into my life; not when it’s meant to be this messy from the start. I regret that even now, Wilhelm’s subtle smile when we first met has always cast a shadow on Roland’s face whenever he stares right back at me. Even though my now ex-husband was already so far away from me, his memories were a shadow that never left my side. A tall man in a dark hoodie leaned his entire body on the lamppost, his head tracking my movements as I turned into a dark alley. I couldn’t quite see his face, but my heart raced when I sensed his presence drawing nea
Wilhelm’s POV“I’ve brought your son here, Mr. Wilhelm,” Jamie, my closest confidant and bodyguard said. My train of thought was completely derailed when I heard someone coo from behind Jamie. He took a step aside, providing me with the opportunity to glance over his shoulder. My eyes fixated on Dr. Miller’s grim expression as she held a bundle of blankets, a small head peeking out from the crumpled folds. As I remained speechless, my gaze focused solely on the baby in Dr. Miller’s arms. “He’s done well during the flight,” Jamie added. The baby fussed and made small movements with his tiny arms before stretching, as if he had been in that position for the longest time. Then, he opened his eyes. I felt like I was completely shattered inside.“He has the color of his mother’s eyes,” I remarked with disdain. “The rest is already your features, sir,” Jamie added, perhaps to put out the rage of emotions that had been going on inside of me. I stared at the child, an empty feeling residin
Kathryn’s POVFive years later…“Charlize, you need to hold onto mommy, alright?” I had a big smile on my face as my daughter went back from running ahead of me, to reach out my hand while I pulled our luggage. “Mommy, it’s so hot! I shouldn’t have worn a jacket,” she fanned herself and pulled at the collar of her shirt underneath her jacket. We were almost at the exit, and I had rerouted our way to the sides to help with Charlize’s concerns. “Here, darling,” I knelt down and unzipped the jacket. Charlize easily shrugged it off for a second before she sighed in relief.“I feel better now, Mommy! Thank you,” she smiled brightly as the sun found her face, her eyes turning lush as the forest, while her blonde hair was lighter when hit by the sun’s rays. “Are we getting picked-up so that we won’t have to walk?” She pouted and I laughed. “I know it’s tiring honey, but bear with it for a while. Mommy has a little surprise for you…” Charlize’s face lit up. “I love surprises!” Her define
Kathryn’s POVI blinked in surprise as I supported Charlize’s head on my shoulder. There was a beautiful boy with blonde hair, though darker than Charlize’s, who peered up from me. His hand holding the hem of my blouse. His eyes took my breath away, somehow reminding me of my own whenever I gazed into the mirror. I stared at the little boy for the longest time, feeling something achingly familiar when he tried to squeeze himself into my side. Crouching down, I patted his head gently. “What’s wrong, little one? Are you lost?”The boy excitedly shook his head. “No! But I’ve found it!”My brows knitted together. “You’ve found what, little one?”“You,” he grinned. “Mommy, I missed you!”I couldn’t help but smile, recalling the child I might have had if he had survived the delivery at the hospital that day. “You’re being silly!” I commented, but I still went along with it in order to not hurt his feelings. “Are you sure that I’m your mommy?”His tiny head nodded. “Yes. You look beautiful
Kathryn’s POVThe voice at the end of the line sounded like a man, and it had me at the edge of my seat as I tried to figure out where this nervousness was coming from when he began to speak. “Are you there?” “Oh, uhm, this is the person who found your son, and he’s here to speak to you…” I remembered the boy mentioning a certain “Mr. Iceberg” and “Bad Woman” he often encounters at home. I figured these were his nicknames for his parents. So, it’s safe to assume that the person I’m talking to now is likely his father. Ignoring the squeeze in my chest, I handed my phone over to the boy, who took it with a slight hesitation showing in his eyes. “Go on,” I appealed to him with a cheerful smile. “We’re just going to ask them if you could stay here for a while.”The boy seemed convinced enough when he nodded his head and placed the phone over his ear.“Hello? Oh…” he pouted and paused to listen to what his alleged father had to say. “What?” He suddenly yelled after a while. “No! I’m n
Kathryn’s POVAs I retreated, leaving the door ajar, I was startled to find my ex-husband standing before me. The surprise on his face mirrored my own, and we stood there in silence for what felt like an eternity. An array of emotions rushed through my mind; they were a tumultuous mix of the affection I once held for him and the resentment I harbored toward him and his family for their treatment of me during our marriage. These emotions often left me seeking solace in the confines of our bedroom, desperate to numb the pain that gnawed at my chest. But those days are behind me now, several years have passed since our divorce. I should have been fine by now.The two of us engaged in a mini-staredown, silently taking in each other's appearance after five years apart. Wilhelm’s features hadn’t changed a bit since the night I left home to raise our twins alone. His dark eyes, usually suspicious-looking, briefly softened as they met mine before returning to their cool demeanor.“My son,” he
