Chapter 4

Author: South Twig
Over the next two days, Isabel kept sending me relatively cozy and intimate photos of her with Joshua. The background ranged from hospital rooms to high-end restaurants and even the front passenger seat of Joshua's sports car.

In every single one of the photos, Joshua stared adoringly at Isabel.

I didn't bother responding to her at all.

The night before the wedding, I received a message from Joshua's best friend, Derek Thompson.

"Ellie, Joshua is just being stubborn. You're still the one he loves the most. Come over to Celestine Hotel tomorrow. He'll propose to you then and plan another wedding ceremony for you!"

I snorted at the screen before typing out a reply. "Sure. I'll be there."

Why wouldn't I be there? Austin and I were about to have our wedding ceremony at Celestine Hotel, too.

Meanwhile, Isabel seemed discontented with all of her previous attempts to get a rise out of me. She quickly sent me another video.

In the video, Joshua's friends were cackling and jeering teasingly.

"That fiancee of yours is such an ingrate, Joshua! How dare a woman as ugly as her kick up a fuss with you?"

"That's right. She's nowhere near as thoughtful and pretty as Isabel!"

The camera turned and pointed straight at Joshua's face. He had a wine glass in hand and looked a little drunk. With a derisive smile, he declared, "I only put up with her in the past because she seemed pretty docile. Now that she's acting out, I'm going to teach her a lesson."

"You got that right! You sure know how to put your woman in her place, Joshua!"

Everyone chortled gleefully before urging Joshua and Isabel to feed each other bites of cake.

Without bothering to watch the rest, I calmly blocked Isabel's number.

The next day, in the VIP dressing room on the top floor of Celestine Hotel, I sat by the floor-to-ceiling window.

The makeup artist slowly wiped away the spots and sallow makeup on my face with some makeup remover. Once the final layer of disguise was removed, the mirror reflected a face so striking it seemed almost inhuman. It was beauty that took one's breath away.

I changed into the wedding gown Boaz had brought over, a custom-made gown studded with 999 crushed diamonds.

At the same time, on the second floor of Celestine Hotel, Joshua had set up the place for a proposal, turning it into a dreamy fantasyland. Red roses covered almost every inch of the floor.

Although it was supposed to have been prepared for his proposal to Isabel, his eyes kept flickering toward the entrance with unconcealable restlessness.

Isabel held onto his arm and said sweetly, "Don't worry, Joshie. She'll come for sure!"

But after a full hour, there was still no sign of me.

The anticipation in Joshua's eyes was slowly replaced with frustration. Just as he was about to lose his temper, the hotel manager rushed in, his forehead covered in sweat.

"Mr. Farrell! Please wrap things up here as soon as possible! The Hammond family has reserved the top floor for Mr. Austin Hammond's wedding.

"It's the event of the century, and all of the most prominent people in Jarlesbury have come! We'll all be screwed if any of these distinguished guests are inconvenienced in any way."

Isabel froze for a moment before tugging on Joshua's arm, whispering, "Why don't we head up there to take a look, Joshie? What if Ellie told us the truth the other day? We should at least congratulate her."

Joshua scoffed. "That's impossible! Fine. Let's go and take a look ourselves!"

He led Isabel and his friends up to the ballroom on the top floor. Along the way, he took out his phone and sent me a voice message.

"Stop throwing a tantrum, Ellie. Mr. Hammond is about to get married today, so I already know you were lying to me before. If you show up in front of me in ten minutes, I can forget about all the foolish things you've done so far."

The moment his voice message was sent, the expensive mahogany doors in front of him slowly opened. Beneath the cascade of spotlights, I stepped forward, holding the edge of my shimmering gown as I slowly walked down the aisle.

My breathtaking face was now fully displayed before everyone.

Meanwhile, outside the ballroom, Joshua looked as if he'd been struck by lightning. His eyes were fixed on my unmistakably familiar figure.

His mind went blank. Completely incredulous, he stammered, "E-Ellie… No… That can't be… That's impossible!"

As if he'd lost his mind, he tried to storm down the aisle toward me. However, he didn't even get within ten feet of me before a few bodyguards in black pinned him to the floor.

A cold, intimidating voice rang out behind me, "Who's this piece of trash who has the nerve to stop my wife from walking down the aisle?"

Austin held my hand and led me off the private jet. A silk scarf covered my eyes, turning my vision completely dark, but all my other senses were heightened to the extreme. The salty sea breeze brushed across my cheeks, carrying an overwhelming scent of white roses. Finally, he untied the blindfold. The moment the light hit my eyes, I was stunned. Before me was a private island, and a sea of white roses stretched on as far as my eyes could see.White roses were my favorite.Austin wrapped his arms around me from behind and rested his chin lightly on my shoulder, his voice low and gentle as he spoke, "The moment we got engaged, I had my people buy this island. You said you didn't like weddings. I figured you simply didn't like a marriage centered on schemes and an exchange of benefits, as if it were a business transaction."He led me forward, step by step, into the center of the sea of roses. There were no guests or officiant, only a floral arch woven from roses and vines.Under

Joshua had gone insane. Following his family's bankruptcy and Isabel's imprisonment for attempted murder, he had a complete breakdown.Somehow, he managed to find out where Mom's grave was. He started hanging around there like a ghost haunting the place, convinced that I would show up at some point. It rained heavily on the anniversary of Mom's death. Austin and I visited her grave together. The car had just stopped when we saw a figure kneeling in front of the headstone. It was Joshua. He'd lost so much weight that I could hardly recognize him. His eyes were now sunken deep into his face, and he gave off a sour, moldy stench. Not a single trace of the erstwhile sophisticated scion remained. When he saw me disembark from the car, his dull eyes became alarmingly bright. He scrambled over like a drowning man grabbing onto a lifeline."Ellie! Ellie!"The bodyguards instantly stepped forward to keep him back. He was forced to stay ten feet away from me. Falling to his knees, he cri

The possessive desire in Austin's eyes surrounded me like a cage, trapping me in.That night, I didn't refuse him.The next day, Austin chartered a luxury yacht and threw an extravagant private party for me.As the sea breeze brushed against my red dress, I stood among the guests with a glass of champagne, like a queen surrounded by her subjects.Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a figure that should never have been allowed onto the yacht.A heavily dolled-up Isabel was clinging to a pot-bellied, middle-aged businessman. Her gaze swept through the crowd with greed and jealousy as she searched for her next target. But when she saw me, her carefully made-up face twisted. She probably never expected me to be the host of the party. Not wanting to waste my time on a clown like her, I turned to head off in search of Austin.Austin had gone off to the side to take a phone call when all of a sudden, he heard a scream from behind."Eliza, you bitch! I'm going to ruin your face!"

Austin's kiss felt like a violent storm rampaging through—as if he wanted to devour me whole. I neither responded nor fought against it, but as he tried to press deeper, I calmly opened my eyes. The moment our lips separated, I looked into his burning, desire-filled eyes and said coldly, "Mr. Hammond, my mother died because of an arranged marriage."Till her dying breath, she waited for the man who had never loved her for even a second to show up. She didn't even get a proper funeral service."I refuse to share her fate."I opened up about Mom's tragic life to him, baring to him the defenses deep within my heart.Under my icy gaze, the fire in Austin's eyes slowly died, sinking into the depths of his unfathomable gaze.He didn't force me into anything. Instead, he stepped back, putting enough distance between us to end the intimacy. Then, he turned around and took a document from the safe in his study, solemnly placing it on the desk in front of me.It was a transfer agreement f

The way Austin stared at me made my heart jolt, but I didn't let that show. Meeting his unreadable gaze, I smirked and said with a hint of barely detectable provocation, "I thought you liked watching a show, Mr. Hammond. It's only right for me to play along with you. Otherwise, your entrance would seem a little too abrupt."He let out a low chuckle and pressed no further, but his arm tightened around my waist. It didn't feel like a warning but a kind of silent declaration instead.…The incident at the charity gala was akin to a boulder crashing into a still lake. By the next day, the ripples had turned into a tidal wave that swept through all of Jarlesbury.Farrell Corporation was jointly blacklisted by the entire industry overnight. All of its business partners unilaterally terminated their contracts with the company. Frowning in disgust, I tried to pull away, but Joshua tightened his grip."I knew I messed up, Ellie. I know I made a huge mistake!" Joshua said pleadingly, humbling himself to the extreme. The eyes that once made my heart flutter were now bloodshot and filled with frenzied regret."You're the one I love. It has always been you! Isabel is nothing to me! As long as you come back to my side, I'll ship her abroad at once and make sure she never sets foot in the country again!"He even tried to touch my face, the one he now considered a priceless treasure.I jerked my head to the side to dodge him before retrieving a handkerchief from my handbag to dust off my wrist, as if his touch had dirtied it somehow. Then, I looked at Joshua, my voice calm as I said the sharpest words, "Mr. Farrell, this version of you, all pitiful and pathetic as you plead with me, seems to be a far cry from the arrogance you showed when you left me at the altar back then."The moment I finished speaking, a v
