Kael’s POV

I didn’t understand why the jealousy hit me so hard. It irritated me in a way that didn’t make sense because I had seen Lyra fight before, and I knew she was good, but watching her move beside Rook felt different. She matched him without effort, and he moved with her like he had done it for years, and something in my chest tightened in a way I didn’t want to accept. It felt like my place beside her was being taken and I hated the thought of it. I tried to ignore it, but the feeling kept growing the longer I watched them.

When she turned to check on the others, that feeling pushed everything else aside. I moved before I even realized what I was doing and pinned her to the tree, and her breath caught when my hands closed around her waist. I felt the heat of her skin through her clothes and her eyes lifted to mine, calm but confused. The urge to mark her came fast and strong, and it scared me how natural it felt.
