The car rolled to a slow stop in front of the house, its engine humming softly before going silent. For a moment, no one moved.

Diane sat stiffly in the back seat, her hands resting on the crutches laid carefully beside her. The hospital bracelet was still on her wrist, stark white against her skin. She looked thinner somehow, paler, like the walls of the hospital had drained something out of her that hadn’t yet returned.

Maya unbuckled her seatbelt and turned immediately.

“Easy,” she said gently, already reaching for the door. “Don’t rush. I’ve got you.”

The driver stepped out first and opened Diane’s door. Maya came around quickly, her movements instinctive now—one hand steadying Diane’s arm, the other holding the crutches as if they were fragile glass.

Diane winced as her feet touched the ground.

“Slow,” Maya murmured again. “Small steps. Remember what the doctor said.”

Diane nodded, though her face tightened. Every movement reminded her of everything she was trying not to think ab

KarenThe door closed softly behind Roy, but the sound echoed in Karen’s head like a gunshot. She stood there for a long moment, unmoving, staring at the exact spot where he had been standing—arms folded, jaw tight, eyes cold with a resolve she had never seen before. When the silence finally pressed too hard against her chest, she laughed.A short, hollow laugh.“So that’s it,” she murmured to the empty room. “You come here, tear everything apart, and walk away like the villain is me.”She dropped onto the sofa, her hand instinctively going to her stomach. Her fingers trembled.“He says he’ll take responsibility,” she scoffed aloud. “As if responsibility without marriage means anything in that family.”She leaned forward, elbows on her knees, eyes burning.“You think I don’t know what I’m doing, Roy? You think this was all a mistake?” Her lips curved slowly into something sharp. “No. This was survival.”She stood again, pacing now.“I loved you first,” she whispered fiercely. “Before

Roy barely slept. When dawn crept through the half-drawn curtains of his apartment, it found him awake, sprawled on the edge of his bed, eyes red, phone clutched loosely in his palm. Diane’s message still burned in his mind, every word etched into him like a wound that refused to close. His phone vibrated again.Once.Twice.Relentlessly.He didn’t need to check the screen to know who it was.Mrs. Sinclair. He exhaled sharply and let it ring out. A moment later, it rang again—longer this time, louder, demanding attention. With a weary groan, he finally answered.“Good morning, Mum.”“Roy.” Her voice was crisp, firm, already irritated. “I have been calling you since morning. Do you know how irresponsible this is?”He sat up slowly, rubbing his face. “I’m not in the mood for this right now.”“That’s exactly the problem,” she snapped. “You are never in the mood when it’s time to take responsibility. Karen’s parents called me again this morning. Your uncles too. Everyone is asking the sam

A few weeks passed, but for Roy, time didn’t move—it dragged.Every day began the same way: unanswered calls, unread messages, silence that rang louder than rejection. Diane had made herself unreachable, not just physically, but emotionally. No replies. No explanations. Nothing. And with each failed attempt, Roy felt another thread snap inside him.Work suffered first.Meetings were postponed. Documents piled up untouched. His apartment became a place he merely slept in, never rested. The nights were worse—his mind replaying Diane’s voice, her tears, the look in her eyes when she told him to leave her alone. Regret settled into his bones like a sickness.Eventually, responsibility forced his hand.He had no choice but to return to the office. That morning, Roy dressed mechanically, his reflection in the mirror looking unfamiliar—eyes sunken, jaw tense, shoulders carrying more weight than they should. At the office, Tessa briefed him quickly, her voice professional but cautious, like s

Roy didn’t leave immediately. He stood outside Diane’s door long after it had closed, long after her footsteps faded down the hallway, long after the house went quiet again. The door felt heavier than it should have been, like it was pressing back at him, reminding him he was no longer welcome on the other side.He raised his hand once—just once—like he might knock again. Then he let it fall. His chest felt tight. Not the dramatic kind of pain that came with shouting or tears, but the slow, suffocating kind. The kind that settled in your lungs and refused to leave. He swallowed hard, nodded to no one, and turned away.Outside, the evening air was cold.Roy walked to his car without direction, without urgency. When he got in, he didn’t start the engine. He just sat there, hands gripping the steering wheel, head bowed forward until his forehead rested against it.“I ruined it,” he whispered. The words sounded foreign, like someone else had said them. He laughed weakly, a broken sound th

The house had never felt this quiet.Roy sat alone on the edge of the leather couch, elbows resting on his knees, hands clasped so tightly his knuckles were pale. The lights were on, but the place felt hollow—like something essential had been ripped out and taken with it.Diane.Her name echoed in his head, over and over, louder than any sound in the room. His phone lay in his palm, screen dark now.Fifty-three missed calls.Countless unanswered messages. He unlocked it again, even though he already knew what he would see.No reply. His thumb hovered over her name. Trembled.“Please…” he whispered to no one.He typed.Baby, I swear to you, I didn’t know what I was doing. I was drunk. They spiked my drink. I would never—never—hurt you like this.He stared at the message for a long time before sending it.Delivered.No response.A sharp breath tore out of him. He dropped the phone beside him and leaned back, pressing his palms against his eyes as if he could erase the images replaying i
