MADISON'S POV:

An hour passed. An hour of staring at an empty staircase, expecting him to come down at any moment.

Wrong of me to expect compliance. Thane was probably sulking upstairs like a wounded animal.

I decided to begin what I was really here to do today.

The first step in healing any trauma patient was simple: strip away their escape routes. Remove the poison they used to numb reality. I knew it wasn't my place to raid his house without permission, but desperate times called for desperate measures.

Marie, his housekeeper, appeared like an angel in an apron. She was a soft-spoken woman with kind eyes who seemed genuinely relieved to have help dealing with her impossible employer. With her guidance, I discovered that, unsurprisingly, the fridge had been hidden in plain sight. I just didn’t know how to open it. Or any of the cabinets. This house was like a luxury Rubik’s Cube.

You wouldn’t believe it. Thane had alcohol lined the shelves like soldiers—bourbon, vodka, wine, craft b

THANE'S POV:"Where exactly are we going?" I asked as she pulled away from the house with surprising smoothness.Madison reached into her bag while keeping her eyes on the road, and pulled out a folded paper, smacking it against my chest hard enough to startle me."Jesus—""Your schedule, your majesty. Read it.”I unfolded it and sighed. It was a handwritten schedule, every line perfectly sectioned in color-coded ink.THANE SLADE RECOVERY SCHEDULE8:30am — Healthy Breakfast (Check)9:30am — Regency Hospital: Physiotherapy12:00pm — Hydrotherapy Session1:30pm — Strength & Mobility Training (Core Focus)3:00pm — Deep Tissue Massage / Recovery4:30pm — Home Stretch + Nutrition RecapI blinked again. “You’ve lost your mind.”"This is recovery," she corrected, reaching for the radio, Madison turned up the radio. I expected some pop stations or maybe things girls listen to. Instead, she dialed straight to a hockey sports channel.“…and with Slade out, Robinson continues to dominate the ice

  • SCORED HER HEART, NOT THE PUCK.   ICE SEVENTEEN: THE UNWILLING PATIENT.

THANE'S POV:Something was wrong with me. Had to be. Because here I was, rushing to finish dressing like my life depended on it.I stumbled downstairs like a man being summoned. No idea why I was hurrying. My back protested every step, and the ache in my leg didn’t make it any better. But somehow, it was like my mind was being controlled by a smart-mouthed nurse who had given me a five-minute ultimatum. It wasn't even midday, and I was already exhausted by her existence.Madison stood in the kitchen, arms crossed, wearing a satisfied expression."Perfect timing," she said, gesturing to the dining table where different meals had been laid out. "Marie made everything on the list I gave her. Eat. "I glanced at the plate. Eggs. Avocado. Whole grain toast. A side of quinoa salad. Who the hell eats salad in the morning? A green smoothie that probably tasted like lawn clippings."I'm not hungry," I lied, my stomach choosing that moment to growl like a betrayed animal."Your stomach disagree

  • SCORED HER HEART, NOT THE PUCK.   ICE FIFTEEN: NO PRIVACY.

THANE'S POV:As I buttoned my burgundy shirt slowly, methodically over my navy-blue briefs, the memory of her face wouldn’t leave my head.“How the hell does one woman barely five-foot-two—have me this twisted?” I muttered, scowling at my reflection like it owed me answers. My voice bounced off the marble. I might as well have been yelling into a void.Julian had already shut me down when I called him upstairs, still fuming from her stunt with the flower jar. “She stays,” he said flatly. “I’m not jumping through hoops to find you another nurse just because this one doesn’t cower at your tantrums.”The nerve. And the worst part? He wasn’t wrong.I ran a hand through my hair, then reached for the silver comb on my vanity.I’d grown it out recently, long enough to change how my face looked from the version the media and everyone was used to. Same jaw, same eyes… just a new surface. One I barely recognized.I stepped into the bathroom, turned the tap to its coldest setting and plunged my

MADISON'S POV:His lips parted just enough. A small miracle. He looked at the medication in my hand like I was offering him poison, but the pain won out over his pride. He swallowed them dry at first, then accepted the jar grudgingly.I slipped the first pill between them, tilted the jar to his mouth, and watched his throat work in a weak swallow. One pill down. Then another. And another. Each successful swallow loosened the knotted nerves. Each breath he took seemed slightly deeper than the last.I sat back on my heels, the flower jar still clutched in my trembling hands, adrenaline making my entire body vibrate like a tuning fork.He was breathing. He was going to be okay.I settled into the chair across from him, watching as the medication kept working its magic. His breathing evened out, the rigid tension in his shoulders beginning to ease. Every few minutes, I reached over to check his pulse—partly professional habit, partly genuine concern that the pills weren't reacting with wh

  • SCORED HER HEART, NOT THE PUCK.   ICE THIRTEEN: CODE RED.

MADISON'S POV:I knew something was catastrophically wrong the moment his face turned the color of old parchment. Not just pale—ghostly. Like someone had drained every drop of blood from his veins and replaced it with milk.At first, my cynical brain kicked in. This had to be theatrics. Maybe seeing that official document had triggered some kind of melodramatic breakdown, or this was his latest attempt to prove how unbearable my presence was."Okay, enough theatrics,” I muttered—but I couldn’t ignore the gnawing in my gut that something wasn’t right. Still, I stood my ground afraid to make a fool of myself like last time.I picked at the chipped edge of my manicure like I wasn't tracking his every micro-expression from my peripheral vision. "You need to get ready. Your first appointment isn't going to be rescheduled just because you're having a moment."No answer. Then a sound that made my blood freeze—a wheeze came.My head snapped up.His body had gone rigid in all the wrong ways.
