Chapter 175

Camille stood at the window of her office, Victoria's office, until yesterday... watching raindrops race down the glass. Each drop chased another, sometimes merging, sometimes veering off on separate paths. Like lives, she thought. Sometimes joined, sometimes divided, all eventually reaching the same destination.

The folder on her desk contained documents that had taken her legal team all night to prepare. Papers that would reshape lives, just as Victoria's announcement yesterday had reshaped hers.

A soft knock interrupted her thoughts. Alexander entered, carrying two coffee cups and wearing the look of a man who hadn't slept much.

"The press is still camped in the lobby," he said, handing her a cup. "You'd think Victoria announced she was selling the company to aliens."

Camille smiled, grateful for his attempt to lighten the mood. "Are you ready for the meeting?"

"I'm not the one they'll be watching." Alexander nodded toward the folder. "Are you sure about this?"

Chapter 174Victoria stared at the scan results spread across her doctor's desk. The images showed her body from the inside, revealing the battle waged within her tissues and bones. But unlike previous scans, these told a different story."The tumors have shrunk by sixty-three percent," Dr. Winters said, her finger tracing the outlines on the images. "It's the best response I've seen to this treatment protocol."Victoria kept her face blank, decades of boardroom battles making it second nature to hide her feelings. But inside, something unfamiliar bloomed, a fragile, tender hope she hardly dared acknowledge."What does this mean, exactly?" she asked, her voice steady despite the storm in her chest.Dr. Winters removed her glasses, meeting Victoria's gaze directly. "It means the cancer is responding to treatment far better than we anticipated. Six months ago, I told you we were looking at buying time. Now, I'm talking about the possibility of remission."The word hung in the air betwee

Chapter 173The courthouse steps swarmed with reporters, their cameras flashing like lightning bugs on a summer night. Camille gripped Alexander's hand as they navigated the crowd, eyes forward, faces blank masks against the shouted questions."Ms. Kane, how does it feel to face your sister today?""Camille! Will you ask for the death penalty?""Are you worried about Rose's mental state?"Alexander's arm formed a shield around her shoulders, guiding her through the press of bodies. Victoria and her parents followed behind, creating a protective circle.Inside, the marble halls echoed with footsteps and whispers. Journalists scribbled notes. Observers craned their necks for a glimpse of the woman who had survived her sister's murderous plans."You don't have to do this," Alexander murmured, his lips close to her ear. "No one would blame you for skipping the arraignment."Camille shook her head. "I need to see her face. I need her to see mine."The courtroom door loomed ahead, dark wood

Chapter 172The ICU hallway stretched before Camille, sterile and bright. Her footsteps echoed against the tile floor as she followed the doctor. The smell of antiseptic filled her nose, making her eyes water, or perhaps it was the weight of what waited ahead."Five minutes," the doctor reminded her, pausing outside a door. "He's very weak."Camille nodded, her throat too tight for words. The doctor pushed the door open, revealing a small room filled with machines. Their steady beeping cut through the silence, marking each beat of Stefan's heart. He lay still in the center of it all, nearly lost among tubes and wires. His skin looked gray against the white sheets, but his eyes were open, alert and watching for her."I'll be right outside," the doctor said, and then she was alone with the man who had once been her husband. The man who had betrayed her. The man who had taken a bullet meant for her.Camille approached the bed slowly. Stefan's shoulder was heavily bandaged, the white gau

Chapter 171The hospital waiting room smelled of bleach and coffee gone cold. Camille sat rigid in an uncomfortable plastic chair, staring at the double doors where they'd rushed Stefan an hour ago. Blood stained her clothes, his blood. She hadn't changed, couldn't bring herself to leave, even when a kind nurse had offered scrubs."He'll pull through," Alexander said, his fingers laced with hers. "Stefan's tough."Camille nodded without speaking. The image of Stefan leaping in front of her, taking the bullet meant for her chest, played on endless loop in her mind. His body jerking backward. The surprised look in his eyes. The spreading red stain on his shirt."Why did he do it?" she whispered. "After everything..."Alexander squeezed her hand. "He wanted to make things right. In the only way he could."Thunder rattled the windows. The storm that had masked their approach to the cabin now battered the hospital, as if nature itself shared their turmoil. Camille shivered, suddenly aware

Chapter 170The first explosion rocked the cabin, sending dust raining from the tunnel ceiling. Alexander and Stefan pressed forward, fighting against the urge to retreat. Behind them, the passage began to collapse."Move!" Alexander shouted as they burst through the exit into the stormy night.Rain hit their faces like tiny needles. The boathouse stood twenty yards ahead, its weathered blue paint visible in the lightning flashes. Two armed men guarded the entrance, their attention fixed on the main cabin as it began to burn.Alexander signaled to his team, spreading them into position around the clearing. Stefan crouched behind a fallen tree, his heart hammering against his ribs. From inside the boathouse came the sound of raised voices."The boat won't start!" a man yelled."Fix it!" Rose's voice, sharp with panic. "We need to leave now!"Alexander caught Stefan's eye, mouthing the words: _Three. Two. One._The team surged forward. The guards spun, raising their weapons, but Alexand

Chapter 169Rain pelted the black waters of Cedar Lake as Alexander and Stefan crouched in the underbrush. The angry sky rumbled above them, lightning flashing in the distance. Through night-vision goggles, Alexander scanned the cabin that held Camille. What had once been a rustic family retreat now resembled a fortress. Motion sensors dotted the tree line. Cameras swept the property in careful arcs. Two men with rifles patrolled the perimeter, their movements precise and military."She's turned it into a damn compound," Alexander whispered, his jaw tight with tension.Stefan wiped rain from his face. "Rose never does anything halfway."They'd left the boats hidden behind the split pine tree Margaret had called the "twin tree," the water team of six men now spread through the woods. The road team waited on the other side of the property, ready for Alexander's signal."Talk me through it again," Alexander said, his voice barely audible over the rain. "Every entrance. Every weak point."

Chapter 168Stefan paced the length of the makeshift command center, running his hands through his hair for the hundredth time. The room buzzed with activity, Alexander's security team, FBI agents, police liaisons, all working frantically to find Camille. Twenty-six hours had passed since her abduction. Twenty-six hours of dead ends and false leads."This isn't working," Stefan muttered, stopping at the map where pins marked locations they'd already searched. "We're missing something. Rose wouldn't just take her anywhere."Alexander looked up from a table covered with files, dark circles under his eyes. "Every property connected to Rose or her aliases has been searched. Twice.""It's not about property records," Stefan said, something nagging at the back of his mind. "It's about meaning. Rose does everything with purpose. She'd want somewhere that... that connects to their past."He closed his eyes, trying to focus. Images flashed through his mind: Camille showing him old family photo

Chapter 167The basement air hung heavy and cold around Camille as she fought to keep her breathing steady. Her wrists burned against the rope that bound her to the metal chair. Four hours had passed since Rose had taken her from their former location to this place, four hours of her sister's twisted games.Rose circled her now, bare feet silent on the concrete floor. The room was lit only by the harsh blue glow of laptop screens showing footage of the Grand Plaza Hotel bombing on endless loop."Watch it again," Rose whispered, her face inches from Camille's ear. "Watch what I did to your precious foundation. To your guests. To everything you built."On the largest screen, flames erupted through the hotel's glass facade. People screamed, stumbling through smoke. Emergency lights flashed across terrified faces. Camille closed her eyes."No!" Rose grabbed Camille's jaw, forcing her head toward the screen. "You don't get to look away. Not until you understand what it feels like to lose e
