HOPE’S POV.

The room returned to quiet after Garvin left.

Hunter I decided to move to the bedroom.

The mood was gone, ruined but it was late and we still needed to go to bed. Only we didn't exactly go to bed.

Tonight didn't look much like the kind that brought sleep with it, so why try? Why even bother?

Right now the only thing I could think about now was Garvin's words from earlier.

“Your enemy is already inside these walls.”

“They are already moving.”

I sat at the edge of the bed, my hands

HOPE'S POV The wound still looked terrible.Dark bruising spread around the healing skin where the poisoned blade struck him earlier. My stomach twisted immediately.Hunter noticed my expression.“It looks worse than it feels.”“You’re still lying.” I Whispered. His fingers suddenly closed gently around my wrist before I could reach for more bandages.I looked up immediately.Hunter was watching me carefully now.“You’ve been worried about me all day.”I frowned. “Of course I have.”His thumb brushed lightly against my skin.“I’m still here.”The quietness in his voice hurt more than shouting would have.I carefully sat beside him on the bed after that while continuing to replace the bandages slowly.Hunter stayed strangely quiet the entire time, just watching me.Finally I frowned slightly.“What?”“You’re shaking.”I immediately looked down.Goddess.My hands actually were trembling slightly.Probably from exhaustion.Or fear.Or both.“I’m fine,” I muttered.Hunter gave me a look

  • SECOND CHANCE: CLAIMED BY THE LYCAN KING   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED FOURTY TWO

HOPE’S POV. The castle did not feel the same that night. Even from inside the chambers, I could feel the tension everywhere. Warriors moved constantly through the halls outside. Heavy footsteps echoed past the doors every few minutes while servants rushed through the castle carrying supplies, armor, weapons, and healing herbs. Nobody was sleeping. Nobody could. Tomorrow morning thousands of men would march into war. And some of them would never come home. Including possibly him. My chest tightened painfully at the thought as I stood near the fireplace watching Hunter silently. He stood near the balcony doors with one hand resting against the stone wall beside him. The cold night wind moved through his dark hair slightly while his eyes stayed fixed on the castle grounds below. Torches burned across the courtyard outside. Warriors. Wolves. Movement everywhere. Hunter had changed clothes earlier after the meetings, though the bandages beneath it were still visible near his

HOPE'S POV.One of the younger warriors suddenly entered the room quickly.“My King.”Hunter turned toward him.“We found a survivor from the northern patrol.”The man stepped aside immediately.Another warrior was helped into the room.Blood covered part of his clothes and one arm hung badly injured at his side.He looked barely conscious.I immediately moved forward to help support him toward one of the chairs.“What happened?” Hunter asked. The scout swallowed painfully.“They were waiting for us.”My stomach tightened.“Magnus’ men?” Garvin asked. The scout nodded weakly.“And the hunters.”Several people in the room went tense immediately. The scout looked shaken just saying the word.“They attacked from the trees.” His breathing quickened slightly. “Half the patrol died before we even understood what was happening.”Hunter’s jaw tightened.“How many hunters?”“I only saw three.”Only three. The damage they caused with only three terrified me.The scout looked toward Hunter again

  • SECOND CHANCE: CLAIMED BY THE LYCAN KING   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED FOURTY

HOPE’S POV.Morning light filtered weakly through the tall castle windows and I finally opened my eyes. For a moment I stayed still, disoriented from exhaustion. My neck ached from sleeping awkwardly in the chair beside the bed, and my body still felt sore from everything that happened in the forest. Then memory rushed back immediately.Magnus.The battle.Hunter collapsing in the cave. The poison. My eyes snapped toward the bed instantly.Hunter was awake.Relief hit me so fast my chest hurt. He was okay. He was still fine. He sat against the headboard slowly, one hand pressed against the bandages wrapped tightly around his side. Pale morning light touched his face, and even now he looked exhausted.Too exhausted.Dark circles sat beneath his eyes, and his skin still looked too pale despite the healers working on him all night. But what scared me most was the fact that he was already trying to stand.“Hunter,” I said immediately. He looked toward me calmly. “You’re awake already.”“

  • SECOND CHANCE: CLAIMED BY THE LYCAN KING   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED THIRTY NINE

HOPE'S POV. The healers finally left the room one by one after that, leaving only two guards outside the chamber doors. Then it was just me and Hunter. The room became quiet except for the rain and the soft crackling fire near the far wall. I sat beside the bed silently, watching him. Waiting. Hunter looked pale beneath the dim firelight. Too pale. Like there was barely any blood left in his veins. I hated seeing him like this. Weak. Motionless. It didn’t feel real. This was Hunter. The man who tore through enemies like they were nothing just minutes ago. The man everyone feared. And tonight he nearly died in front of me. The thought alone made my chest ache. Slowly, I reached over and brushed some damp hair away from his forehead carefully. His skin still felt too hot. “You scared me,” I whispered quietly. No response. Just silence. My eyes burned slightly from exhaustion, but I forced myself to stay awake. I couldn’t sleep, not while he was like this. I leaned

HOPE'S POV.The moment we arrived back at the castle, panic spread everywhere.Warriors rushed through the halls carrying Hunter unconscious between them while servants and guards moved out of the way quickly. Blood still soaked through the cloth wrapped around his side, and every second that passed made the fear inside my chest worse.I stayed beside him the entire time.I couldn’t leave him.Not now.“Move!”“Get a healer now!”“The King’s injured!”The voices echoed loudly through the castle while the warriors carried him toward his chambers. Hunter still hadn’t woken up since collapsing inside the cave, and the longer he stayed unconscious, the more terrified I became.By the time we reached his room, several healers were already waiting. They quickly placed him on the bed while everyone immediately started working around him.One healer carefully cut away the blood-soaked fabric around Hunter’s wound while another prepared herbs and medicine nearby. The smell of wolfsbane hit the
