LOGIN“So how did it go? Did you meet your new bride? Do you like her?” My grandmother’s eager eyes made my shoulders stiff.
I moved to her bed and sat down with a small sigh.
“How are you feeling today, Granny? Does your chest still hurt?” I asked her. Her eyes narrowed briefly at me.
“I am fine, Lex. But you haven't answered my question,” she pushed. Seeing her bright eyes made my chest hurt a little. I didn't want to break her heart. Not when she looked this fragile.
I flew in hours ago from Moscow after my pilot delayed me for hours. I hadn't heard from my grandmother in several hours due to the unending meetings. When I finally got a hold of her, she was chattering nonstop about a wonderful woman who she just met and wanted me to marry her immediately.
The idea was ridiculous to me but grandmother insisted that there was no time, that I would regret it if I let her go. I never had much interest in women because of my work so anytime she brought up marriage, I told her to pick whomever she liked and I would wed her.
I just wasn't expecting it to be that fast. A bit of arguing and she revealed that she was hospitalized and almost died of a heart attack. The guilt of not being there when she needed me pushed me to accept her offer.
I had nothing to lose anyway.
She sent me an address and a number hours later and insisted I go see my bride with a gift before coming to the hospital.
Her excitement was infectious and I found myself growing curious about this woman that had my grandmother completely wrapped around her finger.
Picking a wedding gift was the second hardest thing to do. The hours kept counting until I was unbearably late. By the time I returned to the city, almost a full day had gone.
I rushed over to her address and my first thought was to get her the hell out of such a shabby place. Maybe a house would make a perfect gift.
“Sir, are you sure you want to go in?” My assistant looked even more concerned than I was.
“It's fine,” I nodded. “Call the agent and tell him to prepare his best housing properties. She'll pick the one she likes best.”
“Yes sir.”
I headed instead, searching for apartment 4B and when I finally found it, I was greeted by the sound of moans.
My eyes narrowed. I glanced at the apartment number again and sure enough I wasn't in the wrong apartment.
Irritation etched across my features as I listened to them rumble on. Really? Today of all days?
Even my assistant shifted uncomfortably beside me.
“We’re leaving.”
“Sir, should I…” I caught his hand before he could touch the door, sending him a stern look. He blinked and immediately muttered an apology.
“Inform the agent,” I said. “I won’t proceed with the gift purchase yet.”
“Okay sir.”
“Well…” Grandmother slapped my shoulders impatiently, snapping me out of my thoughts.
“I went to the address you gave me,” I answered. “I didn't see her. She was probably not home.”
In her current condition, I couldn’t tell her that her saviour was not exactly as pure as she thought.
Her eyes darted to the gift bag in my hand and she beamed instantly. “What did you buy for her? Is it the pearl necklace I recommended? Or the diamond ring? Or both maybe?”
“Grandma!” I groaned. “You are too enthusiastic. I only agreed to this marriage because I trusted your judgement. Still I don't think she is worth that much money…”
“Why are you complaining, you little rascal?! You were hours late to sign your own marriage agreement,” She smacked my head. “Besides, you have more than enough money to spare. What is wrong with spoiling your wife a little? Is that how I raised you?”
If she was in better health, I would have told her that the so-called wife she recommended was currently sleeping with another man in her run-down apartment. She probably didn't even take this marriage seriously and was only in for the money.
For all we know, she could have already known my grandmother's identity and simply tricked her into believing she was a good Samaritan who expected nothing in return.
“What matters now is your health, alright. I'll be staying longer this time so don't think you can escape anywhere without your guards,” I said sternly.
That woman wouldn't have taken advantage of her if my stubborn grandmother had allowed her guards to accompany her.
She frowned, clearly displeased by my words.
“I'll also be hiring a caretaker for you. I'm always swarmed with work and I don't want you unattended to,” I finished.
“I have my daughter-in-law…”
“No, you do not,” I frowned. “I'll find someone else. A lot of staff need replacement anyway.”
“I don't understand. Why go through the trouble? Do you not like your wife?” Grandmother asked, a little confused. “She will be moving in with us, is she not?”
“Grandma, she is still a stranger. I need time to get to know her, okay?” I said. “We can do that without staying under the same roof.”
She was not pleased with my decision at all but for some reason, she didn't argue.

Vilmorre Corporation was in even worse shape than I thought. I had been so focused on my international branches that I didn't realize the home branch was slowly rotting away.
We weren't going bankrupt or anything but the staff was incompetent and millions were siphoned over the past six months I was away.
In three days, I had fired half the staff and arrested three. We were currently in the process of hiring new personnel.
“Sir, the last candidate is ready for the interview,” my assistant informed me. Since I returned, Mr Hale has been doubling as both my assistant and secretary.
It was too tasking and I needed to relieve him of some of the work, which was why I was conducting this interview myself.
“Who is it?” I asked, taking the file from him.
“Mrs Klaire Kingston”
Why did that name sound so familiar?
I was halfway through reviewing the Moscow reports when Grandmother walked into my study. She didn't knock. She never did. I looked up from my laptop. "You're up early." I mentioned. "We need to talk." She ignored the comment and walked straight toward me.I closed the laptop. "That doesn't sound good."She sat across from me. “Well, it doesn’t, cause I cannot bare looking at you look so lifeless since that employee left the country.” She sighed. “So, what are you going to do about it?” I asked with a wry smile."I want you to reconsider the marriage."I stared at her. "What marriage?""The arranged one. The very one that failed with a crazy coincidence. I told you I could never pick wrong for you. The girl you almost married wasn’t the girl I picked for you. But this one…”I leaned back slowly. "No.""You haven't even heard me out.""I don't need to.""You don't know who the woman is.""I don't care."Grandmother sighed. "She is a good woman.""So are thousands of women.""You shou
I almost changed my mind three times before getting out of the car. There was absolutely no reason to meet this woman. I was not with her grandson, neither did I have plans to keep this going on for long.Grandmother had chosen a quiet restaurant away from the city center. It wasn’t overly crowded, and the private garden at the back gave us enough privacy to talk without being overheard. I spotted her immediately. The moment she saw me, she smiled. “Klaire.”I walked toward her.“Grandmother.”She stood and hugged me. I had only met her a few times, yet there was something incredibly warm about the way she held me. As though she had known me much longer than I knew her.She pulled away and studied my face. “You’ve been crying.”I looked away. “It’s been a difficult few days.”“I know.” We sat down. Then she poured me some tea as I looked around the garden. “How are you?” She asked.“I’m surviving.” I simply said. “And how are you too?”She smiled. “Well, I have not been doing great si
I called Lance again, so many times that my fingers already knew the sequence. I held the phone to my ear.Just the familiar message. The number you have dialed is currently unavailable.I lowered the phone, simply stared at the screen and jeot trying.Nothing.I finally dropped the phone beside me. "He really doesn't want to talk to me."Maybe saying it aloud could make it real. “Lance was gone”. And it wasn’t just from the airport or apartment that he got for me. He had removed himself from my life. And perhaps...I couldn't blame him at all for it. I was at fault. I messed up. I truly did.I closed my eyes. The photographs appeared in my mind again. Our lips licked tightly against each other. I could still feel the heat from the kiss by just thinking about it.My hands around his neck. There was no explanation that could make those pictures look innocent.I wiped my face. "I ruined it." A bitter laugh escaped me. "Of course I did." It seemed like everything I touched eventually fell
The mansion had never felt this quiet. Or maybe my head was the quiet one. I had nothing to think of again. And the silence was somehow worse than busy thoughts. Grandmother had gone to bed early. The servants had all retired. I sat alone in the study, pretending to read through the Moscow reports. But I hadn't read a single line in almost an hour. Every few minutes, my mind wandered back to the airport. Was she gone already? Had the plane taken off? Did the photo get to them? Did it perhaps break any trust?Nah. It had been hours since they left. No feedback from Hale. They were probably in Switzerland now.Maybe...that was for the best.Suddenly…The front door slammed. The loud sound echoed through the entire mansion. I frowned. A maid hurried toward the study."Mr. Aleksander…” Before she could finish…"I know where he is!" A familiar voice rang through the hallway. My heart skipped.No...It couldn't be. The rapid footsteps approached and the study door burst open. She stood there
"This is it."I smiled as I looked through the large glass windows overlooking the runway.Switzerland.A new country. A new beginning.Maybe this was exactly what my life needed. Lance rolled our luggage toward the boarding area. "Excited?"I forced a smile. "I think so."He laughed. "I'll take that as a yes."We checked in our bags and made our way toward the departure gate. Everything felt strangely peaceful. Or so I thought until…Lance's phone vibrated. He glanced at the screen."No caller ID?" He frowned."Probably spam." I responded. He was about to ignore it before another notification appeared. This time… A picture. He looked over to me and raised his brows. “Not the right time” he chuckled. “I’m with my woman.”I chuckled too. “Just check it. It’s probably a friend…wishing you well.”“Urgh.” He hesitated at first, but ttapped it.Since his phone was a bit far from me, I couldn’t see what he was staring at, but I watched his smile disappear. His footsteps stopped."Lance?" I c
Somehow, my mind could not settle. Maybe I should have gone to stop her from leaving. But for what reason? I laid lifeless in my bedroom. My phone vibrated. And it showed Hale Calling...I answered. "What is it?""Sir…Can we meet? Now."I frowned. "At the usual place?""Yes. There are some things I need to tell you."Twenty minutes later...I walked into the quiet restaurant. Hale was already waiting by the window. Two cups of coffee sat untouched. He looked unusually serious.I pulled out the chair opposite him. "You sounded like someone died."He gave a weak smile. "It isn't that. But...I think you'll be angry with me."I leaned back. "I've been angry all week. What more could worsen it? Go ahead."Finally, Hale sighed. "Angry all week? Why are you still torturing yourself?"I looked out the window. "What do you mean?"“We both know Klaire is the reason you’ve been angry.”"She's probably halfway to Switzerland by now." I smiled bitterly."And isn’t that enough for you to let her go
“Klaire?” Immediately the elevator stopped, Elise’s voice resounded through the quiet hallway. My eyes widened. But before I could react, Mr. Vilmorre moved.Very fast. One second I was standing in the hallway, The next I was pulled into a corner beside the office wall. My back hit the surface soft
His smile immediately faded as Mr Hale said those words and he retracted his hand from mine. His expression was rather confusing. Was he angry? Did he not have a good relationship with his grandmother?"Grandmother?" He repeated flatly, stepping forward and completely blocking view. Before Mr Hale
“Mrs Claire Kingston, this way please,” the tall suited man called for me. I sucked in a deep breath, murmuring a quick prayer before walking in. After crying myself to sleep yesterday, Elise had offered to help me retrieve my important documents from my cloud. I don't know how she did it but th
“Let's get divorced.”The grocery bag dropped from my hand as my entire body froze. Oranges rolled across the apartment hallway while a carton of eggs burst open beside my feet, but I could only stare at the text glowing on my screen. My husband wanted a divorce. My husband. The man I had legally m
