Emma didn't go home that night.

She went straight to Damien's apartment and told him everything. About Tyler. About the money. About the text from the unknown number.

Damien listened without interrupting. When she finished, he stood and walked to his office.

He came back with a file.

"I've been having Claire monitored," he said.

Emma looked at him. "What?"

"After everything with Richard," Damien explained, "I hired investigators to look into everyone close to me. I wanted to know if there were other people involved in covering up my mother's death."

He opened the file and spread papers across the table.

Phone records. Bank transfers. Security footage stills showing Claire in places she shouldn't have been.

"She's been following you," Damien said quietly. "For months."

Emma looked at the photos. Claire outside her gallery. Claire at the coffee shop where Emma met a friend. Claire parked across the street from Damien's apartment building.

"Why?" Emma asked.

"Because she's obsessed with me," Damien said. "And she sees you as a threat."

Emma's phone rang. It was Claire.

"Don't answer it," Damien said.

But Emma already had.

"Hi," Claire said. Her voice was bright. Normal. "I was just thinking about you. Do you want to get coffee?"

"No," Emma said.

"Are you sure?" Claire asked. "I thought we were friends."

"We're not friends," Emma said.

There was a pause on the other end of the line.

"You've been talking to Tyler," Claire said. Her voice had changed. It was colder now.

Emma didn't respond.

"You've been asking questions," Claire continued. "About me. About that night. About things you shouldn't be asking about."

"How do you know what I've been asking?" Emma said.

"Because I know everything," Claire said. "I know where you go. I know who you see. I know what you do."

Damien took the phone from Emma's hands.

"Claire, stop," he said. His voice was calm but firm.

"Damien," Claire said. She sounded almost normal again. "She's turning you against me. She's making you think I'm crazy."

"You've been following Emma," Damien said.

"I've been protecting you," Claire corrected. "From her. From people who want to hurt you."

"By following my wife?" Damien asked.

"By keeping her honest," Claire said. "By making sure she doesn't destroy you the way everyone else has."

Damien hung up.

Immediately, there was a knock on the apartment door.

Damien moved to the peephole and looked through. His jaw went tight.

"It's Claire," he said.

He opened the door.

Claire stood in the hallway with her hands at her sides. She was smiling but her eyes were empty.

"Hi," she said. "Can I come in?"

"No," Damien said.

"I need to talk to you," Claire said. "Privately."

"Anything you have to say, you can say in front of Emma," Damien replied.

Claire's smile widened but it didn't look human.

"No," she said. "I don't think so."

She moved forward and Damien blocked her path.

"You need to leave," he said.

"I've been waiting twenty years," Claire said. Her voice was getting louder. "Twenty years for you to see me. Twenty years for you to understand that I'm the only one who's ever really loved you."

"That's not love," Damien said.

"Yes it is," Claire said. "I was there that night. I saw what happened to your mother. And I never told anyone. I protected you. I protected your family."

"You let a murderer go free," Damien said.

"I did it for you," Claire said. She was crying now. "I did it because I loved you."

"By keeping secrets?" Damien asked. "By lying?"

"Yes," Claire said. "Because that's what love does. It protects. It sacrifices. It does whatever it takes."

Emma stepped forward.

"Love doesn't follow people," Emma said. "Love doesn't send threatening text messages. Love doesn't obsess."

Claire turned to look at Emma. Her expression changed. It went dark.

"You don't know anything about love," Claire said. "You married him for money. You were never in love with him."

"Maybe not at first," Emma said. "But I am now."

Something broke in Claire's face.

"No," she said. "No, that's not how this was supposed to go."

She reached into her jacket.

Damien moved forward immediately.

"Don't," he said.

Claire pulled out a gun.

Emma's entire body went cold.

"I've loved you since I was twelve years old," Claire said to Damien. Her voice was shaking. "I watched you grow up. I was always there. I was always waiting."

"Claire, put the gun down," Damien said. His voice was steady but his hands were up, showing he wasn't a threat.

"I can't," Claire said. "Because if I do, then I have to accept that you're never going to love me back."

She looked at Emma.

"And I can't accept that," Claire continued. "I can't accept that he chose you."

Emma grabbed Damien's hand.

"Call the police," Emma said to Damien without looking away from Claire.

Damien's phone was already in his other hand. He was dialing.

"It's too late," Claire said. "It's always been too late."

She raised the gun.

The police took Claire away still screaming about her love for Damien, still insisting Emma had ruined everything. Damien locked the apartment door behind them and the silence was suffocating. Emma's hands were shaking. She kept replaying the moment Claire pulled the gun, the moment Damien stepped in front of her, the moment everything could have ended differently. "We need to leave the city," Emma said suddenly. "We need to disappear before she gets out." But Damien was staring out the broken window at the city below, understanding that running wouldn't solve anything. Claire had connections. Claire had resources. And Claire had twenty years of planning on her side.

  • SECRETS OF THE BILLIONAIRE NECKLACE    CHAPTER 30: THE LETTER

Emma opened the envelope slowly. Richard's handwriting was neat. Precise. The handwriting of someone who'd spent years controlling everything, including how he presented himself on paper. Dear Emma, I don't know if you'll ever read this. I don't know if you'll care. But I need to try. I am your biological father. You know that now. What you may not know is that I've known about you since before you married Damien. I had you investigated. I learned everything about you. Your struggles. Your strength. Your refusal to give up even when everything was working against you. And I was proud of you. That's the truth I need you to understand. I didn't orchestrate Margaret's attack because I wanted to hurt you. I orchestrated it because I thought you were getting too close to discovering the truth about Katherine's death. I thought if I removed you from the picture, Damien would stop asking questions. I thought I could protect myself by eliminating the threat. I was completely w

  • SECRETS OF THE BILLIONAIRE NECKLACE    CHAPTER 29: WHEN SHE WOKE

Emma's eyes opened to white walls and the sound of machines beeping. Her chest hurt. Everything hurt. A nurse was checking her vitals. "Welcome back," the nurse said. "You've been asleep for three days." Three days. Emma tried to remember but couldn't. Just fragments. Pain. Blood. Damien's voice calling her name. "The bullet didn't hit anything vital," the nurse continued. "You're going to recover." Emma tried to sit up but her body wouldn't cooperate. "Don't move," the nurse said. "You need rest." Over the next week, police came and took her statement. Lawyers came with documents. Damien never left her side. Margaret confessed to everything. Richard had been orchestrating it from prison, paying her to watch Emma, to report back, to make sure Emma stayed close to Damien. Richard knew Emma was his daughter. He'd known before the marriage. "He was using you," Damien said when he told her. "To help him get information. To help him rebuild his empire." Emma didn't

Margaret's voice on the phone had been calm but there was something underneath it. A threat wrapped in politeness. "Meet me at the manor," she'd said. "Alone. If you bring Damien, I won't talk." Emma had argued but Margaret hung up. Now Emma stood outside Cross Manor in the darkness, understanding that she was about to walk into something dangerous. Damien was supposed to be meeting her there in an hour. They'd agreed he would stay back and let Emma talk to Margaret first, then move in if things got bad. Emma had a panic button on her phone. One press and Damien would come running. She didn't plan on needing it. The manor was exactly as she remembered. Cold stone. Expensive everything. The kind of place that had seen too many secrets. Margaret was waiting in the study. "Thank you for coming," Margaret said. She was sitting in a leather chair, looking like she owned the world. "What do you want?" Emma asked. "To tell you the truth," Margaret replied. "About your hus

  • SECRETS OF THE BILLIONAIRE NECKLACE    CHAPTER 27: THE OPENING

The gallery was packed. Emma stood in the back watching people move through the space, looking at her paintings. Strangers. Collectors. Critics. People who'd read about the drama and came out of curiosity instead of genuine interest in her work. She wore a black dress. Simple. Nothing that would distract from the paintings. Tyler arrived early. He looked good. Healthier than he had in the hospital. He moved slowly, like his body was still recovering, but his eyes were clear. "These are incredible," he said when he saw her paintings. "Thanks," Emma replied. They didn't hug. They didn't pretend things were normal between them. They just stood there acknowledging that something had shifted and they were both trying to navigate it. "I'm sorry," Tyler said. "I know I've said it a thousand times but I need you to know that I mean it." "I know you do," Emma said. "Does that mean you forgive me?" Tyler asked. Emma thought about it. About the lies. About the money. About

  • SECRETS OF THE BILLIONAIRE NECKLACE    CHAPTER 26: ALONE

Emma locked her apartment door and didn't leave for three days. She didn't answer Damien's calls. She didn't check on Tyler. She sat in her living room and stared at the walls, trying to understand how everything had gotten so broken. Around noon on the third day, there was a knock on her door. "Emma, I know you're in there," Damien said through the door. "Please let me in." She stood on the other side of the door, her hand on the lock, unable to move. "I'm not leaving until you talk to me," Damien continued. Emma opened the door. Damien looked worse than she felt. He hadn't shaved. He was wearing the same clothes from yesterday. His eyes were red. "Come back home," he said. "I can't," Emma replied. "Why not?" "Because I need to think," Emma said. "Because I need to figure out who I am without all of this." Damien moved into the apartment and closed the door behind him. "I understand you're scared," he said. "I'm scared too." "You don't understand," Emma

  • SECRETS OF THE BILLIONAIRE NECKLACE    CHAPTER 25: THE BREAKING POINT

Emma stayed at the hospital through the night. Damien sat beside her while Tyler slept, his breathing steady but shallow. The machines beeped around them, monitoring every heartbeat, every breath, keeping Tyler tethered to life. Around three in the morning, Emma went to get coffee. The hospital cafeteria was empty except for a nurse restocking shelves. She bought two cups of black coffee and sat alone at a table, staring at nothing. Damien found her there twenty minutes later. "He's asking for you," Damien said. Emma followed him back to Tyler's room. Her brother was awake, staring at the ceiling. "The doctors said I'm lucky," Tyler said when Emma entered. "Another thirty minutes and I wouldn't have made it." Emma didn't respond. She pulled the chair close and sat down. "I don't feel lucky," Tyler continued. "I feel like I failed even at that." "Don't say that," Emma said. "Why not?" Tyler asked. "It's true. I lied to you. I stole from you. I gambled away money t
