THE RECKONING

Marco spreads the files across the desk like a man laying out a losing hand of cards. Bank statements. Shipping manifests.

Photographs of men who don't exist on paper anywhere else. The papers cover every inch of the dark wood surface, and the more Elena looks at them, the heavier her chest feels.

"This is three weeks of digging," Marco says. His voice is flat with exhaustion. "It's not enough yet."

Dante flips through the pages, his jaw tight enough to ache. "Enough for what?"

"Enough to take him down clean. Right now all we've got is money moving in circles and men who'll deny everything the second a lawyer walks in the room."

Marco taps one photograph with his finger. "We need someone willing to testify. On the record. Someone Victor trusts."

Elena stands at the window, her back to them, staring out at the city lights. She turns around slowly. Something clicks into place behind her eyes.

"I know someone," she says.

Both men look at her.

"Sofia," she continues. "She's worked inside his foundation for years. She's seen the real books. The ones he doesn't show anyone."

Marco's expression tightens. "She's also his niece. If this goes wrong, he won't just come after you. He'll come after her too."

"She already knows the risk." Elena's voice doesn't waver. "She told me the truth knowing exactly what it could cost her. I think she'd rather fight than keep hiding."

Dante watches her carefully. Something unreadable moves in his dark eyes. "You're sure about this?"

"I'll ask her myself. If she says no, we find another way." Elena crosses her arms. "But I don't think she'll say no."

Dante nods slowly. But there is worry in his eyes. "Then call her. Now."

---

Sofia doesn't hesitate when Elena calls.

"Yes," she says, before Elena even finishes the question. "Whatever you need. I'm done protecting him."

"It's dangerous, Sofia."

"So is staying silent." Sofia's voice cracks slightly, then steadies. "I've watched him hurt people for ten years and told myself it wasn't my business. It's my business now."

Elena closes her eyes. Relief and fear war in her chest. "Thank you."

"Don't thank me yet. Thank me when this is over and we're both still alive."

---

They meet at the bookstore again that evening. The blinds are drawn. The front door is locked. Marco sits across from Sofia with a small recording device in his hand.

She turns it over in her fingers like it might bite her.

"Start from the beginning," Marco says gently. "Whatever you remember. Dates, if you have them."

Sofia takes a shaky breath. Her hands tremble, but her voice is steady when she speaks.

"The foundation moves money for him. Real donations go in one account. The dirty money goes through a second one, disguised as grants to companies that don't actually exist."

She looks up at Elena, her eyes wet. "I found the accounts by accident, two years ago. I've been copying records ever since. Just in case."

"Why didn't you say anything sooner?" Elena asks softly. Not accusingly.

"Because I was scared." Sofia's voice breaks. "I was so scared of exactly this. Of him finding out. Of what he would do to me. To you." Her hands shake around the recorder. "But I'm more scared now of what happens if I stay quiet."

Marco leans forward. His voice is gentle but urgent. "This is good, Sofia. This is very good. But I need the physical copies. Bank records, dated files, anything with his signature."

"I have most of it at my apartment." Sofia hesitates. Fear flickers across her face. "I can bring it tomorrow."

"Tonight," Dante says quietly from the doorway. He has been standing there, listening, his arms crossed. "If Adrian's already sniffing around Elena, Victor isn't far behind. We don't have the luxury of tomorrow."

Sofia nods. She is pale but resolved. "Tonight, then. I'll get them and bring them straight here."

Elena reaches out and squeezes her cousin's hand. "Be careful. Please."

"I will." Sofia squeezes back. "I've been careful my whole life. One more night won't kill me."

---

She doesn't make it back with the files.

Elena's phone rings just past nine. Sofia's name lights up the screen, and something about the ringtone itself sends ice through her chest before she even answers.

"Sofia?"

Silence. Then breathing, uneven, and a voice that isn't Sofia's at all.

"She's fine," Victor says calmly. "For now."

Elena's whole body goes cold. The phone nearly slips from her fingers.

"What did you do?" Her voice comes out sharp, shaking.

"I had a very informative conversation with my niece this evening." Victor's voice is maddeningly even. Like he is discussing the weather.

"She had quite a lot to say about foundation records and men with recording devices. I was very disappointed in her. But I was even more disappointed in you."

"Let her go. She has nothing to do with this."

"Nothing to do with this?" Victor laughs softly. A cold, hollow sound. "She's been feeding you information for weeks, Elena. She's been my niece for twenty-seven years, and she chose you over me. That has everything to do with this."

"Victor—"

"Come to the old warehouse on Ninth," he says, cutting her off. "Alone. Bring nothing with you but yourself, and I'll consider letting her walk away. You have thirty minutes."

"Elena, don't," Dante says immediately. He is already moving toward the door. "It's a trap."

"I know it's a trap." Her voice is shaking, but her eyes are steady. "But he'll kill her if I don't go."

"He'll kill you both if you do."

"Then we go together." She grips his arm. Forces him to look at her. "I'm not losing her the way I almost lost you. I'm not losing anyone else to him."

Victor's voice crackles back through the phone. Patient. Amused. Like he has all the time in the world.

"I heard that, Moretti. Bring your whole army if you'd like. It won't change what happens if she isn't here in thirty minutes."

The line goes dead.

Elena stares at the screen. Her heart hammers. Then she looks up at Dante.

"We go together," she repeats. "But I go in first. He wants me. If I walk in alone, he lowers his guard. That's when you move."

"That's insane." Dante's voice is raw, desperate. "I can't let you walk in there alone."

"You have to trust me." She cups his face in her hands. Forces him to meet her eyes. "I spent ten years being his weapon without knowing it.

Let me finally use that for something that matters. Let me use it to save her."

Dante stares at her for a long, agonized moment. His jaw works. His hands clench at his sides. Every instinct in him screams no.

"Thirty seconds," he says finally. His voice is rough. "I give you thirty seconds inside before I come through that door. Not a moment longer."

"Deal."

He pulls her against him. Quick and fierce. His forehead rests against hers. His hands grip her shoulders like he is afraid she might disappear.

"If anything happens to you—"

"It won't." She kisses him once. Hard. Like a promise. "I didn't survive ten years of forgetting who I am just to lose myself again tonight."

"Elena—"

"I love you." The words come out before she can stop them. She doesn't regret them. She doesn't take them back.

"I don't remember saying it before. But I know it's true. I've always known it. Even when I didn't remember you, I knew it."

Something breaks open in Dante's face. He pulls her close again. His voice breaks.

"I love you too," he whispers against her hair. "I never stopped. I will never stop. Come back to me."

"I will."

---

They move fast through the city. Marco drives. Gabriel sits in the back with Dante, going over the plan one more time.

Elena sits in the passenger seat. Her hands are folded in her lap. She tries to keep them from shaking.

"Warehouse on Ninth," Marco says. "Abandoned for years. One entrance on the main floor, one fire exit in the back. Victor's men will be watching both."

"We go in through the front," Dante says. "Elena first. Gabriel and I take the back. Marco, you stay on comms. Tell us what you see."

"Got it."

Elena turns to look at Dante. "Remember. Thirty seconds."

"I remember." His voice is tight. "I'll be counting every single one."

The warehouse looms ahead. Dark and rusted. Broken windows stare out like hollow eyes. The street is empty. The only sound is the distant hum of traffic somewhere beyond.

Elena takes a breath. Then another.

"Let's do this."

---

She walks in alone.

The warehouse is dark. The air is thick with dust and the smell of rust. A single lightbulb hangs from the ceiling, casting a weak yellow glow over the center of the room.

Sofia sits tied to a chair. Her face is bruised. Her eyes are wide with fear.

"Elena," she chokes out. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

"It's okay." Elena moves toward her. Her hands are raised. "It's okay, Sofia. I'm here."

Victor steps out of the shadows. Slow and deliberate. A gun in his hand. He looks exactly the same as he always does.

Calm. Elegant. Smiling like this is all a game he is winning.

"Elena." He says her real name like it tastes familiar. "How nice of you to come."

"Let her go." Elena's voice is steady. Even though her heart is slamming against her ribs. "You wanted me. You have me."

"Not yet." He gestures with the gun. "I want you to stand right there. Perfect. Now tell me—" His smile sharpens. "Do you really think you're the first person I've done this to? Do you think you're special?"

"I don't think I'm special." Elena holds his gaze. Her hands are steady at her sides. "But I know you're afraid of me. You're afraid of what I remember. What I can prove."

Victor's smile falters for just a fraction of a second. "That's where you're wrong."

"You killed my father. You erased my memory. You stole ten years of my life." Elena takes a step forward. Her voice rises. "But I remember now. I remember everything. And I'm not afraid of you anymore."

He raises the gun. "Then you're a fool."

"Elena!" Sofia screams.

The back door explodes open.

Dante moves faster than she has ever seen anyone move. He crosses the room in three strides. Grabs Victor's arm. Forces the gun up. It goes off—once, twice. Shots aimed at the ceiling. Plaster rains down.

Elena runs toward Sofia. Her hands already pull at the ropes. "I've got you, I've got you."

Sofia sobs against her shoulder as Elena works the knots loose.

"Run," Elena says. "Go. Now."

Sofia scrambles toward the back door. Marco is there, pulling her through, shouting something Elena can't hear over the ringing in her ears.

She turns back toward Dante.

He has Victor pinned against the wall. His forearm is pressed against Victor's throat. The gun lies on the floor between them, kicked away.

"You took everything from me," Dante growls. His voice shakes with rage. "Ten years. Ten years I thought she was dead."

"She should have been." Victor's voice is strangled but still defiant. Still cold. "She was supposed to stay buried. You both were."

Dante's fist pulls back.

"Don't." Elena's hand is on his arm. Gentle but firm. "Don't do this. He's not worth it. He's not worth you."

Dante's breathing is harsh. Ragged. His fist trembles against Victor's throat.

"He'll never hurt anyone again," Elena says softly. "We'll make sure of that. But not like this. Not in the dark."

Dante looks at her. His eyes are wild. Full of ten years of grief and rage and love. Slowly, so slowly, he lets go.

Victor slides to the ground. Gasping.

"We have the evidence," Elena says. She pulls Dante back. Pulls him toward the light. "We have Sofia. We have the bakery woman. We have everything we need. Let him rot in prison. That's worse than anything you could do to him now."

Dante stares at her. Something in his face settles. He nods once. Reaches down. Hauls Victor to his feet.

"Marco," he calls. "Call the police. Tell them we have Victor Rossi ready to confess to every crime he's ever committed."

Victor laughs weakly. "You have nothing."

"I have everything," Elena says. She steps close to him. "I have my memory back. I have Sofia. I have the truth." She smiles.

Cold and final. "And I have ten years of your lies to unravel. You're done."

---

They walk out of the warehouse together. Hand in hand. The night air is cold and clean against their faces.

Sofia is in Marco's car. Gabriel is already on the phone. Calling in the evidence.

Elena turns to Dante. "I'm sorry. I know you wanted to hurt him."

"More than I've ever wanted anything." His voice is rough. "But you were right. He's not worth it. You are."

She smiles. Small and tired. "I love you. I wanted to say it before, but I didn't know if it was real. I know it's real now. I've always known it."

He pulls her into his arms. Presses his lips to her forehead. Her cheek. Her mouth.

"I love you too," he whispers.

"I loved you the first time you spilled wine on my jacket. I loved you when I thought you were dead. And I'll love you until the day I die."

"Good." She leans into him. Lets his warmth chase away the cold. "Because I'm not going anywhere.”

  • SHADOWS OF OBLIVION    FORGOTTEN ROOM

The journal sits on Marco's desk for three days before anyone can make sense of half of what is written in it. The leather is worn, the pages yellowed with age, the handwriting sometimes too faint to read.Elena keeps coming back to look at it anyway, like the answers might finally show up if she stares hard enough. She sits in the chair beside Marco's desk, her elbows on her knees, her chin resting on her hands. Her eyes move across the pages, searching for something she has missed. The ink blurs in places. The dates jump around. But every time she looks, she sees the same words. Victor. Foundation. Money. Torn out clean."Elena leans over his shoulder. Her stomach tightens. She can see the ragged edge where the paper was ripped, not cut, but torn quickly, roughly. "What was on it?""No way t

The gates of the old Rossi estate creak open slowly, rust groaning against rust, like the house itself has been holding its breath for ten years and only now remembers how to exhale.Elena sits frozen in the passenger seat, staring up the long gravel drive at the mansion beyond — pale stone, ivy climbing one whole side, windows dark and empty like closed eyes."We don't have to do this today," Dante says gently, watching her instead of the house."No." Elena's hand tightens on the door handle. "I need to see it.Sofia said Victor never sold it. Just locked it up and let it sit here, untouched, for ten years.""Why would he keep it?""I don't know." She finally pulls her eyes away from the windows to look at him."Maybe he wanted a piece of my father he could control, even after he was gone.Maybe he just didn't want anyone else finding whatever's still inside."Marco pulls the car to a stop at the top of the drive, and for a long moment, nobody moves."I'll wait out here with Gabriel,

Even his medical license traces back to a man who died fifteen years ago and never actually practiced psychology a day in his life.""So who is he really?" Elena asks. She is staring at the
