Elena

I sat staring into the evening sky from my window. The sun had cast an orange glow in the clouds. I could see the field outside and the flowers that lined them. The guards stood just a few feet from my window.

‘Well, now running away isn’t an option.’

‘I need to work,’ I huffed to myself.

I’d been indoors all day, and that was how it was every day. I needed to leave my room and this house. It felt like the air around here was clamping around my very throat.

‘I should probably step out,’ I sighed. ‘I should try at least.’

I resolved. As soon as I opened the door, I was startled by a broad back and shoulders in front of my room.

“Oh.”

“You’re back,” was all I could say, heat immediately rising to my cheeks as the events of the previous night washed over my mind.

He just turned around and nodded, continuing his guard duty.

“I want to go for a walk.”

“Around the manor,” I added.

“I’ll come.”

“You don’t have to,” I retorted. He really didn’t. If it wasn’t his job, that is. And becaus

  • SINFULLY HIS    CHAPTER 43

Elena My eyes fluttered open to meet the dim lighting of the room, the light from his screen in sharp contrast and drawing my attention to the man I was lying next to. "How long was I out?" I glanced around, the room looking a bit darker. "Only for about an hour," he kissed my hair. "Oh." My body felt limp and heavy like I had been poured into the bed instead of lying in it. I rested my weight on my hands and pulled myself up, but immediately regretted it. "I don't think that's a good idea." He laughed. "Well, whose fault is it that I'm bedridden?" I glared at him playfully. "Not mine," he shrugged and carefully lifted my head from his chest like I was a baby. "Excuse you?" I sat up by myself to the best of my ability, resting half of my weight on my elbow. "I mean, it was...joint effort." He chuckled and pulled his trousers up to his waist. "Eww, don't say it like that." I laughed lightly, looking away from him. It was nice, it was wonderful—but I couldn't shake off the

  • SINFULLY HIS    CHAPTER 42

Elena"And what's up with you?" I casually asked Rafael as I moved to sit on the bed.The Rafael I knew—even when cautious—was carefree, but now he was so locked in on himself."Nothing really." His eyes looked drowned in exhaustion and something else I couldn't quite place yet."You've been this way the entire trip." I paused, trying to find the right word to say: "Weird.""I just missed you," he now had a forced smirk on his face."All you've ever done is hover over me." I rolled my eyes, averting his gaze."Maybe that's not enough." He closed the distance in a second, plopping himself on the bed."I don't—""Shh," he brought my face to his with his finger on my chin and planted a soft kiss on my lips.He was slow and gentle as he sucked my lower lip and gently pushed his tongue into my mouth.I responded, tangling my hands in his hair as I kissed him back. After a breathless ten seconds, he broke the kiss, his breath shallow.Like a breeze, he moved and dropped all the curtains tha

  • SINFULLY HIS    CHAPTER 41

ElenaThe yellow polka-dotted sundress I wore danced in the strong ocean breeze as I walked into the rather large hut. I had my hair in a half-up, half-down style, with a yellow bow pinned to the back of my hair.I had rushed to take my bath and tried not to come late. So no, I had no makeup except my mascara and lip liner. And yes, my skin still felt a tad bit irritated after sleeping with my makeup on. My poor sensitive skin. The sides of the hut were all open, like half walls and not fully walled in. A large dining table sat in the center, and a few members of the famiglia were present. And some new faces—wives and cousins and sisters of the Don that I didn’t even know existed. I guess he was always the prodigal son Rafael had told me about, pushing away every member of his family. The only reasonable seat for me to take, even when there were empty seats, was the one by Rafael. On my other hand, and at the head of the table, was the Don. I was basically a stranger to the others, ev

  • SINFULLY HIS    CHAPTER 40

Elena I had spent the entire dinner party with Lisa. It was primarily to introduce her to some of the members of the Cosa Nostra. Rafael had come, and I had to pretend not to care that he was around me. He stared at me, even when he was conversing with the guests. It made my stomach churn, and I hoped Lisa didn’t notice when he sipped his glass of champagne, looking at me with the glass covering his nose and mouth as he walked past a few of the guests. It made me want to drink away his hot stares, but I wasn’t much of a drinker anymore. Lisa, on the other hand, could have taken the whole bar with her if she could. Her face contorted into a dramatic grin when she downed the shot of alcohol. “Let’s get… out of here,” she whispered, unashamedly burping. Her brown eyes glinted with mischief under her thick brows and her full lips were clamped together in a sly smirk. Oh, she’s done for. “Yeah, let’s go to your room.” The dinner party was on the main island, a short way from the ro

  • SINFULLY HIS    CHAPTER 39

Elena After I took a bath and put on my swimwear—a pair of shorts and a bra—I rested on the hammock outside, letting the late afternoon sun kiss my skin in every place possible. I was reading a brochure that had been left on the cupboard for the guests. The beautiful places we could visit in Vaitape Village—the nearby village on the island—were all I cared about. I pushed Rafael and the Don to the farthest part of the back of my mind and let them stay there. I couldn’t keep worrying about what was going on. Until one of them said something, I wouldn’t know. So I let it rest until one of them did. A knock came on my door. I hadn’t ordered room service. The knock came a second time. I rolled my eyes and got out of the hammock, picking up my chiffon jacket that was part of the swimsuit and slinging it over my shoulders, covering my mostly exposed body. As I opened the door, I saw the face I expected but kind of dreaded seeing. Poking my head out of the door on both si

  • SINFULLY HIS    CHAPTER 38

Elena My heart thundered in my chest as his gaze swept over my slim body. Shit. Did he see Rafael coming out from here? No way—I’d be dead otherwise. Fuck, he’s staring. Does he know? “Um, I’m… I’m gonna… go.” I glanced around, my hands stuffed in my pockets. I felt his eyes bore into my back as I slid past him and back to the seats. This time, I didn’t return to the seat by the Don. Instead, I sat behind him, by the windows, where I couldn’t see Rafael and he probably couldn’t see me. The Don walked past me back to his seat, not minding that I wasn’t back at my previous one. As he plopped down, Luca’s words danced in my head. You should run away before he gets a whiff of what’s happening. Maybe we should run away. Leave this hellhole. I peeked at Rafael’s face through the small space between the seats. His eyes were downcast as he whispered something to Enzo. As I stared at him talk, the realization washed over me like a cold bath: we would either have to run away together o
