Emily’s POV

Lucas had barely left my side all night, and part of me wanted to hate him for it because his presence made it impossible to keep the emotional distance I so desperately needed. However, another part of me found comfort in his quiet watchfulness.

Now, it was morning, and the world had gone eerily calm again. I wished I could say I felt safe, but the truth was, I felt trapped between two storms, one named Clarisse, and the other named Lucas.

Mrs. Higgins had brought me breakfast earl

Lucas POVThe ride back was silent.Emily sat beside me in the back seat, wrapped in my jacket. Her head rested against the window, but I knew she wasn’t sleeping. Her eyes were open, staring at the passing darkness. The forest blurred by.The world looked the same. But nothing was the same.Chris drove. The others followed behind us in the second vehicle. No one spoke for the first hour.I kept my hand over hers. She didn’t pull away. But she didn’t squeeze back either. Her fingers were cold. Not physically cold.Just distant. Finally, she spoke.“Did anyone die?”Her voice was small. Careful.I answered honestly.“Not that we saw.”She swallowed.“That building…”“It was going to collapse anyway,” I said gently. “Joe designed it that way.”She turned slightly toward me.“I felt it fighting me.”I didn’t interrupt.“It was like… like the walls were alive. Like they were holding something down. And when I pushed back…” She trailed off.“You survived,” I said. She closed her eyes.“Tha

Lucas POVThe steel doors slammed shut with a sound that echoed through the corridor. For half a second, no one moved. The alarms screamed overhead. Red lights flashed across the concrete walls. Dust rained down from the ceiling as the building trembled again, deeper this time.Emily’s hand tightened around mine.I felt it.The energy inside her was still there.Quieter than before, but not gone.Joe stood several feet behind us, calm as ever, like he was watching a carefully planned experiment reach its final stage.“You were never meant to leave so easily,” he repeated.I stepped in front of Emily instinctively.“You’re insane,” I said.“No,” he replied. “I’m prepared.”The corridor ahead of us was blocked by heavy steel doors. The way we came in was closing too — another set sliding down slowly from the ceiling.Chris swore under his breath.“We’ve got less than a minute before both sides seal completely.”The team further down the hall shouted as more doors began locking in sequen

Lucas POVIt had been three days since the wedding, three days since Emily disappeared from my arms.Joe was many things, but careless was not one of them. This was a message. You’re behind. The fire had destroyed most evidence, but not all of it.One of the trackers approached cautiously.“There’s something strange,” he said.He handed me a small metallic fragment. It looked like part of a container. Smooth. Silver. Not burned.“Found near the back seat,” he added.Chris took it from my hand and studied it carefully.“This isn’t from the car,” he said. “It’s too intact.”My jaw tightened.“What is it?”Chris hesitated.“It looks like part of a medical injector.”My chest went cold.Injected.The dart from the wedding.“They sedated her twice,” I muttered.Chris nodded grimly.“They didn’t want her conscious.”I turned away from the wreckage. If she had been awake, she would have fought. And if she had fought—I forced the thought away.Emily was strong.Stronger than she believed.Th

Emily’s POVI sat up slowly. My body felt heavy, like I had been asleep for days. My mouth was dry. My thoughts were slow.I touched my arm. There was a tiny red mark there. He drugged me.My chest tightened.Lucas.The memory of his face before everything went dark made my stomach twist. He had been smiling. I had been smiling. We were finally safe.We were finally choosing each other in front of everyone. And then I disappeared.Tears burned my eyes, but I forced them back.Crying would not help.Panicking would not help.I swung my legs off the bed and stood carefully. My knees were weak, but they held me.I walked to the door and pressed my ear against it.Silence.Too much silence. That scared me more than noise.I stepped back and looked around the room again. No cameras that I could see. No vents large enough to crawl through. No loose bricks. This was not meant to be escaped. The door opened without warning.I stepped back immediately.Joe walked in.He looked exactly the same

Lucas POVI stood in the middle of the hall long after the guests had been escorted out. My hands were clenched so tightly my nails dug into my palms. I welcomed the pain. It reminded me I was still here. Still breathing. Still responsible.Chris stood a few feet away, giving orders to the guards. His voice was steady, but I knew him well. He was angry too. Angry at Joe. Angry at the traitor elder. Angry at everything.I turned slowly and walked toward him.“Seal every border,” I said. My voice did not sound like mine. It sounded deeper. Colder. “No vehicle leaves this territory without being checked. No one enters without being questioned.”“It’s already done,” Chris replied. “But Joe had a head start.”I nodded once. I knew that. Joe had planned this carefully. He would not take Emily without knowing exactly how to leave. That was what scared me the most.He was patient. And patient men were dangerous.I walked toward the long table where the elders had been seated earlier. One chai

Clarisse's POVA few hours before the wedding, I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at my hands for a long time. They were shaking. I pressed them together hard, as if that could stop the storm inside me. The room was quiet, too quiet for a day that was meant to be full of joy. Somewhere in the distance, I could hear preparations happening. Voices. Laughter. Music testing. Every sound felt like a knife.Lucas had come to see me early that morning. He had begged me.That word still burned in my chest. He said he needed me to cooperate. He said it was just one day. He said Emily would live somewhere else after the wedding, that things would change. I knew he was lying. Not fully, maybe, but enough. Still, I nodded. I smiled. I told him I would behave. He looked relieved. That relief hurt more than anger would have. When he left, I stayed seated for a long time. Then I stood up and walked to the mirror. The girl looking back at me didn’t look like a monster. She didn’t look insane. She l
