Emily’s POV

I stood there for a long time, staring at the bathroom tiles like they might speak back to me. My head was pounding.

I laughed, a small broken sound that startled even me. If Joe thought leaving me alone would make me obedient, he didn’t know me at all. I had survived the auction school. I had survived Clarisse. I had survived being powerless for far too long.

I just needed a plan.

I moved closer to the sink, turning the tap on and letting the water run for a few seconds before cupping it in my hands. I drank slowly, forcing myself not to gulp. I wasn’t dying here, not without a fight.

I leaned forward, staring at my reflection in the cracked mirror above the sink. I barely recognized the girl staring back at me. My hair was tangled, my face pale, eyes sunken and red. There was a faint bruise along my jaw, another on my shoulder where Joe had shoved me.

Lucas would lose his mind if he saw me like this. The thought hit me so hard my knees nearly buckled.

“Don’t,” I whisper

Clarisse's POVThe music throbbed through the mansion and laughter echoed into every hallway. Glasses clinked and someone shrieked in delight near the bar as another bottle of champagne was opened.I stood at the center of it all, a smile carved onto my lips. This was how it was supposed to be. This was how it should have always been.Emily was gone. The thought warmed me from the inside out and for the first time in weeks, I didn’t feel that familiar tightness in my throat. I didn’t feel like I was choking on rage or jealousy or humiliation. I felt light, free and above all, victorious. My friends surrounded me, dressed in glittering fabrics, their faces glowing beneath the chandeliers. They laughed loudly, drank recklessly, and leaned close to whisper things that made them giggle again. I accepted their compliments with grace, letting their admiration wash over me.“Clarisse, you look incredible,” Nadia said, touching my arm as if she needed to confirm I was real. “I swear, I’ve nev

Emily's POVI don’t know how long I sat there after Joe left. My body ached in places I didn’t know could hurt. My head throbbed where dried blood clung to my hairline, and my throat burned from screaming until my voice gave up on me.Joe’s words replayed over and over in my mind."You’re not going anywhere anytime soon."I hugged my knees to my chest and rocked slightly, forcing myself to breathe. Panic wanted to take over, but I couldn’t let it. I couldn’t afford to lose myself here. Not when Lucas was out there. Not when I had already survived so much.I pressed my forehead against my knees and closed my eyes."Lucas," I thought desperately. "Please."The mansion was quiet again and I didn’t know how much time passed before I heard it. At first, I thought I was imagining it. My mind had started playing tricks on me after the isolation. But then I heard it again, a gunshot. My heart slammed violently against my ribs and just then i heard another.Shouting followed. Boots pounded ac

Joe's POVI stood outside the door for a long moment, listening. She had been banging the door for a while now and I needed to see her, before the guards did something stupid and ruined everything.I turned to the men behind me and lifted a hand. “Move away,” I said. “Out of sight.”They hesitated but eventually parted the way for me to pass. One of them stepped forward anyway, holding out a pair of handcuffs.“Just in case,” he muttered.I took them without any comment and then I opened the door. The smell hit me first. It was blood. My jaw tightened as I stepped inside and shut the door behind me, locking it myself this time.“Emily,” I called softly. She was on the floor, back against the wall, head tilted, hair stuck to her face with sweat. Blood smeared her clothes, her hand pressed tight against her chest. For a split second, something uncomfortable twisted in my gut. She had pushed things too far.I walked closer to her. “I told them to leave,” I said gently. “It’s just us

Emily’s POVI didn’t know when I blacked out.One moment there was pain and Joe’s arms were tight around me. The next, there was nothing. When I woke up, the first thing I noticed was the smell. It was damp and old, like a room that hadn’t been used in years. The air felt heavy in my lungs, making it hard to breathe properly. My head throbbed viciously, and when I tried to move, a sharp pain shot through my wrists.I gasped and forced my eyes open. The room was small with grey walls and no furniture other than a thin mattress on the floor.“Hello?” I called out, my voice hoarse. There was no answer and I pushed myself up slowly, every muscle screaming in protest. My wrists weren’t chained, but they felt sore, like they had been bound earlier. My throat was dry, burning.“Lucas?” I whispered, even though I knew he couldn’t hear me.Saying his name made my chest ache. I pressed my hand over my heart, trying to breathe through the tightness.I staggered to my feet and walked to the door

Lucas’ POVFor a moment after Clarisse spoke, I couldn’t hear anything else. The words did not register as language at first. They were just sounds. Empty, meaningless sounds that floated in the air and refused to settle into anything real.My phone slipped from my hand and hit the floor and I stared at the spot where it landed, my mind blank. That couldn’t be right. Emily was alive. She had been texting me hours ago. She had been asking about colors and flowers and laughing about Clarisse’s looks.I shook my head slowly, as if the motion alone could undo what I had just heard.“No,” I said, though I wasn’t sure who I was talking to. “That’s not… no.”Chris was saying my name, his voice was urgent, but it felt distant, like it was coming from underwater.I pressed my palms to my temples, trying to force my thoughts to line up, to make sense.“Lucas,” Chris said again, stepping closer. “Listen to me.”I looked up at him.“No,” I snapped. “You listen to me. She was fine. She was plannin
