Liana's POV

I slammed the door shut behind me like a gate of doom andI charged into the house, the anger boiling within me so intense I could barely feel the floor beneath my feet.

"Unbelievable!" I yelled, flinging my keys onto the couch. "The nerve! The effrontery! He had the balls to come here like he was the victim, like I was the one who owed him an apology. And the annoying thing? It was obviously just an act."

I paced my parlour like a caged lioness, I made a fist and tried to do a breathing exercise to calm my racing heart. All of Dominic's threats rang in my head. How dare he think he could manipulate me like that. How dare he?

"The last five minutes?" I growled at no one at all. "Were more like five minutes of wasted air."

"Liana…" Mum's voice called from behind me, soft but insistent.

I turned to face her. "You know this is your fault right? You told me to listen to him. You told me to go out there!"

"But I was right," she said calmly. "Now you've heard what he had to say,

  • STEP ASIDE EX-HUSBAND: THE RISE OF LIANA   Chapter 120

Liana's PovThe air had that sharp cold bite that turns every breath into a small cloud. The minute the heavy oak doors creaked shut behind us, the outside world swallowed me up. It started as a low hum, the kind you hear in a restless crowd. But within seconds, it rose into a wall of sounds…. reporters shouting over one another, camera shutters clicking in rapid bursts, flashes strobing so fast I felt like I’d stepped into a lightning storm.“Miss Davids! Is it true you are holding back evidence?”“Is this adjournment just a tactic to stall?”“What is on the laptop?”Microphones were pushed toward me like spears, their black foam tips crowding my vision. One of them nearly clipped my cheek. Before I could move back, Stanley’s arm went around me, firm, protective, and guiding me toward the waiting car. His body blocked mine completely, his broad shoulder taking the brunt of the jostling. His other hand came up, palm flat against a microphone shaft, pushing it gently but unmistakably b

  • STEP ASIDE EX-HUSBAND: THE RISE OF LIANA   Chapter 119

Lianna’s POVThe kiss lingered, it was slow like neither of us wanted to break whatever fragile spell had just wrapped itself around us. His hand slid to the side of my neck, warm and steady, the rough pad of his thumb brushing the edge of my jaw. My breath caught. I hadn’t realized how much I’d been holding myself back until that moment…. how much I’d been pretending not to want this. When he pulled back just enough to look at me, his gaze searched mine, like he was giving me a chance to stop this before it went any further. I didn’t. I leaned in again, and this time, the kiss deepened. His other hand found my waist, drawing me closer until I could feel the steady beat of his heart against mine. The coffee table pressed into my hip as we shifted, laughter slipping between us when our knees bumped.“Upstairs,” he murmured against my lips, his voice low, almost hesitant.“Serena” I mouthed and he sighed. “Let's use the room here then.” He said pointing to the guest room. We left the w

  • STEP ASIDE EX-HUSBAND: THE RISE OF LIANA   Chapter 118

Lianna’s POVThe streetlights blurred past in streaks of yellow light, casting faint flashes over Stanley as we drove. We had just taken a left turn but if we had kept going, we would eventually end up in my neighborhood. Stanley stretched out and picked his phone and it lit up on the console. The glow washed across his cheekbones as he brought the screen towards him, highlighting the faint lines of etched into his face. He stred for a moment before locking his phone and turning towards me. “It's almost nine,” he muttered, his voice low, sounding like an accusation. “You need to get home.”I turned in my seat to face him. “No. We have the laptop now and we need to find out what’s in it tonight…”“It’s late, Lianna.” His tone wasn’t sharp, but it was firm enough to feel like the conversation was already closed. “I can do that on my own. I will tell you what ever happens but if you don't go now, it will be too late for you to go home..”“I can stay at the safe house too,” I argued. “It

  • STEP ASIDE EX-HUSBAND: THE RISE OF LIANA   Chapter 117

Liana's PovThe rain had stopped, but the streets still glistened with water, there were puddles around, some marked with lines that looked like rainbows. Growing up, we were told that it was as a result of oil being on the floor before the rain. The windshield wipers moved lazily now, not because we necessarily needed it but Stanley left it working, squeaking faintly as they moved. I sat in the passenger seat, staring at the road ahead but not really seeing it. My mind was too busy circling the same thoughts over and over, looping back on itself like an old film reel with a scene it refused to move past.“Almost there,” Stanley said, his voice low. It startled me for a second; we’d been in near total silence since leaving the safe house. I glanced at him because I needed the distraction of another face. His hands rested steady on the steering wheel, but there was a kind of tension in his shoulders that told me he understood exactly what we were driving toward.“Thanks,” I murmured, t

  • STEP ASIDE EX-HUSBAND: THE RISE OF LIANA   Chapter 116

Liana's PovThe sun was just beginning to go down when I opened the car door, my purse on my shoulder and my phone loosely held between my fingers. The safe house was silent, still and dark. As I stood in front of it, I sighed. Behind those walls was Serena, the one who held the secrets we were all so desperately wanting to find out.I'd not seen her since the night before the hearing. I had spoken to her over the phone but I needed to see her. I didn't want her feeling like I didn't care. It was because I was busy with cam.. And I alsp didn't want to look at her and see a blank look where fire and confidence once resided. But tomorrow was the next hearing. The pressure was mounting by the minute. I had to see her. I had to check in.I typed in the code and waited a few seconds before I heard the ding. I walked in my pace slower than usual, like my legs did not want to move any further. As I opened the inner door, I sighted her nurse sitting by the dining table munching on some snacks

  • STEP ASIDE EX-HUSBAND: THE RISE OF LIANA   Chapter 115

Liana's PovThe silence in the house was more heavy at night. Cam had fallen asleep earlier after dinner, her fox held tight under one arm, a soft rice smudge remaining on her cheek. I couldn't quite get myself to clean it off… not yet. She was too peaceful.I was scrubbing mugs in the kitchen sink when Mum slid in quietly, the edge of her wrapper sliding over the tiled floor."She's out like a light," she murmured, wringing her hands with a tea towel.I nodded. "She was tired. Hospital really stressed her."Mum leaned against the counter, watching me with a look I was far too used to. That look meant that an argument was coming and it was one I was not going to enjoy."I've been thinking." she began slowly.I let out a groan, bracing myself. "That never means anything good.""I think you should talk to her," she said.I stared at her, confused. "What do you mean?"She gave me a stern glare. "About the case. About what is going on. Not all of it, Liana, but enough so she understands."
