The sudden, sickening snap of his knee joint still echoed in the vast concrete room, a sharp exclamation mark on his reckless pride.

Jaxson’s eyes rolled back briefly as the blinding wave of pain tore through him. He was a former star quarterback a towering force of nature who had spent his youth dominating football fields and his adulthood commanding boardrooms and now he was falling like a felled oak.

"Jaxson!" I cried out, my instincts completely taking over before my brain could calculate the physical impossibility of what I was trying to do.

Instead of backing away, I stepped directly into his path, If his right knee struck the hard floor with his full weight behind it, the surgical graft would tear clean off the bone, ending his career and any hope of recovery

So I held him. I braced my body, taking the crushing, suffocating weight against my own.

His arms instinctively locked around my waist, his right leg hung completely useless, hovering an inch above the floor, while his left leg strained to hold what little balance remained.

The forced physical contact was so sudden, so absolute, that it pulverized the thick concrete walls we had spent days building against each other.

There were no corporate lawsuits in this moment, no forged contracts, no quiet suspicions of betrayal or corporate espionage. There was only a man in excruciating, raw agony, and the woman who had caught him before he hit the ground.

"Don't put weight on it," I breathed, my voice trembling as my lungs fought for air beneath the crushing press of his chest. "I've got you, Jaxson. Let me take your weight."

He didn't speak. He couldn't.

I felt the ragged, trembling rise and fall of his ribs against mine, felt the heat pouring off his skin in waves, washing away the biting cold draft lingering in the gym. His fingers tightened in the knit fabric at my waist, pulling me even closer until there wasn't a space left between us. The overwhelming power of his physical presence wrapped around me completely, for the first time since I had stepped onto his isolated mountain estate, Jaxson’s iron defense had fractured wide open. He wasn't the ruthless CEO or the untouchable billionaire recluse. He was exposed, vulnerable, and completely reliant on my strength to keep him standing.

A shudder ran through his massive frame as he fought through the worst shock, his heavy, hot breaths brushing against the sensitive skin beneath my ear.

Then, his breath caught.

As his head rested on my neck, his senses seemed to register the immediate, suffocating intimacy of where he was. His nose brushed against the soft curve of my collarbone, catching the quiet, distinct scent clinging to my nose.

I felt a sudden, emotional stillness sweep through his body.

Slowly, painfully, Jaxson lifted his head.

His face was mere inches from mine, so close that the intense heat of his skin warmed my cheeks. The storm of pure physical agony in his dark eyes had quieted, replaced by something far more.

His gaze drifted down from my eyes, tracing the line of my jaw, before fixing entirely on my lips.

His fingers, still anchored around my waist, shifted fractionally, his thumb pressing through the soft sweater to trace the curve of my hip, every second felt heavy with the unspoken attraction and slow-burning tension that had been built under the surface for months.

He leaned in half an inch closer, his chest expanding against mine as if he were about to speak or do something far more unyielding.

My heart slammed against my ribs. "Jaxson..." I whispered, my voice barely a thread in the silent room.

The sound of his name on my lips seemed to break the spell.

A sudden, sharp flash of realization crossed his mind. The shutter slammed down behind his eyes, leaving them cold, dark, and utterly unreadable once more.

He pushed off my shoulders with sudden, forceful restraint, relying on his good leg to shift his weight back toward the examination table. His hands dropped from my waist as if my skin had suddenly burned him.

"I don't need your pity, Doctor," he said, his voice dropping into an icy, detached register that cut deeper than the cold outside.

He leaned heavily against the edge of the high table, gripping the surface until his knuckles turned white, forcing his body into a rigid, upright posture that refused to acknowledge the pain still coursing through his leg. The barrier was back up, higher and more impenetrable than before.

I took a step back, adjusting my coat, my hands trembling as I tried to regain my professional composure. "It wasn't pity. It was my job. If you had fallen” i retarded

"I didn't ask you to catch me," he interrupted smoothly, turning his face away to stare out the floor-to-ceiling glass panel at the endless swirl of white outside. "Finish the assessment so you can leave."

Before I could reply, a low, ominous vibration hummed through the concrete floorboards.

It wasn't the wind, nor was it the internal heating unit. The recessed LED lights along the gym's high ceiling flickered sharply, dipping into a dim amber emergency glow.

A sharp, repeating electronic chim began to pulse from the wall control panel beside the entrance, the estate’s perimeter breach alarm.

Jaxson’s head snapped toward the sound, I stepped toward the panel, looking at the high definition security feed rendering on the glass touchscreen.

The camera feed from the main gate showed a heavy black SUV idling in the middle of the blizzard. The heavy wrought-iron gates hadn't just been opened, they had been completely disabled, swinging aimlessly in the wind.

On the screen, three figures stepped out of the vehicle, wrapped in heavy tactical gear, carrying military-grade signal dampeners. But it was the fourth figure stepping into the frame that made the blood run cold in my veins.

It was Bronisław.

He wasn't waiting at the base of the mountain as Kaja's warning had suggested. He was already inside the inner perimeter. On the live camera monitor, he looked directly into the lens, held up a master biometric override key,a key that only I and the firm's top executives possessed, and tapped the screen.

The heavy electromagnetic locks on the gym's frosted glass doors clicked open with a loud, final thud.

"Sienna," Jaxson said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he reached into a drawer beneath the examination table and pulled out a sleek, dark security transmitter. "Get behind me."

The floorboards beneath us vibrated violently.Radek instantly drew his sidearm, stepping in front of us, his radio bursting into a storm of static and frantic shouts."Boss, they didn't just cut the power!" a guard’s voice screamed through the speaker over the heavy chatter of automatic gunfire. "The black vans smashed through the lower security barrier, they are on the driveway"The radio transmission cut into high-pitched static.Out in the snow-covered courtyard, right outside the library windows, a blinding spotlight ignited, pinning us in its beam.Outside, the ragged chatter of automatic gunfire echoed sharply against the frozen pine trees of the mountain pass. The Vance tactical units had breached the lower gates. They were inside the perimeter.Yet, inside the dim, smoke-scented air of the library, the loudest sound in the world was the heavy, rhythmic thrum of my own pulse. He bought my contract to keep me safe. The words spun through my mind like a centrifuge, tearing dow

My heart trooped as I waited for him talk"She didn't need to connect to your uncle's servers to send him the files," Radek said softly. "This chip has been broadcasting her exact real-time location, every keystroke she’s typed, and every diagnostic scan she’s performed directly to Bronisław’s private desk in Kraków... since the day she packed her bags to come here."The tiny black square on the exposed motherboard seemed to pulse under the glare of Radek’s penlight.A hardware bug. Soldered directly into my machine. My breath rattled in my throat as the cold reality swept over me. Every night I hunkered over this keyboard typing out detailed physical evaluations of Jaxson’s knee, mapping his joint range, recording the microscopic progress of his tissue recovery Bronisław had seen it all in real time.He hadn't been waiting for me to send reports. He was harvesting them."It’s an active mirror," Radek said, his tone flat and unyielding as he pointed the steel tip of his prying tool at

The emergency red strobe light spun across the dark mahogany shelves of the library, casting long, bleeding shadows over the floorboards. Out in the driveway, the muffled roar of diesel engines signaled the arrival of the Vance tactical convoy, but in my chest, the real violence was happening in complete silence. They were going to erase him.Bronisław was taking twenty-four years of Jaxson Cole’s sweat, fractured bones, and relentless obsession, and sweeping it into a corporate dustbin on live television. And he was doing it using my hand to hold the broom."Sienna," Jaxson’s voice came out low, a grounded rumble near my ear. His fingers remained braced on my shoulders, his grip so firm it kept my knees from buckling under the sheer weight of the lie. "Look at the screen. What’s the protocol?""He’s lying to the league board," I said. The trembling in my vocal cords vanished, replaced by an icy, dangerous calm that surprised even me. My blood didn't run hot; it turned to slush. "He’s

The taste of Jaxson Cole was still on my lips,The sound didn’t come from the heavy timber doors or the wind howling against the triple-paned glass facing the Tatra slopes. It came from my tablet, resting face-down on the leather ottoman beside the hearth. A sharp, continuous ping the high-priority frequency reserved exclusively for the Vance Sports Legacy board.I pulled back, my breath hitching in my throat. Jaxson’s hands were still resting on my waist, his thumbs pressing firmly through the soft cotton of my sweater. For three seconds, his steel-blue eyes held mine, dark with a heavy, unfiltered hunger that had nothing to do with football and everything to do with the way my fingers had just been tangled in his blonde hair."Don't," he muttered, his voice a low, and vibrated against my collarbone. "Let it ring, Sienna.""It’s the executive line," I whispered, though my voice sounded paper-thin. My skin felt flushed, every nerve ending firing from the sudden warmth of his body pr

We had taken refuge in the grand estate library. Floor-to-ceiling mahogany shelves lined with ancient leather-bound volumes enclosed the room, creating an intimate, insulated sanctuary against the blizzard raging beyond the stained-glass windows. On the central table, my laptop sat open beside Jaxson’s encrypted tablet, displaying real-time monitoring streams of Bronisław’s network activity and the fluctuating pre-market stock tickers. Jaxson stood near the hearth, staring down into the flickering amber embers. He had discarded his formal suit jacket and tie, leaving his white dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar, the sleeves rolled up to his forearms. Even with the physical exhaustion carved into his sharp features and the dull, lingering ache in his patellar tendon, his posture radiated an immovable, magnetic power. I sat on the edge of the leather sofa, watching him. My body was physically drained from the terror of the past few hours the setup, the threat of arrest, and the so

I stood paralyzed in the narrow stone corridor, my fingers clutching the metallic casing of the encrypted micro-drive so tightly my knuckles throbbed white. Beyond the heavy oak mechanism that had just sealed shut, the muted shouts of federal marshals echoed down the primary hallway, their heavy tactical boots rattling the floorboards. Jaxson was out there right now, holding off the agents, putting his body, his reputation, and his remaining freedom on the line to buy me time. My chest heaved in shallow, ragged gaps as a sudden, suffocating wave of realization crashed over my entire existence. Bronisław. My own uncle. The man who had hugged me at my father’s bedside, the man who had solemnly promised to protect our family’s legacy after my father fell ill—he was the puppet master who had orchestrating my ruin from the very beginning. Every contract, every debt notice, every tearful phone call from my relatives begging me to sign away my freedom to Jaxson Cole had been a calculat
