Andrea's POV

Dinner was torture.

I kept my eyes on my plate, focusing intently on cutting my chicken into perfect bite-sized pieces, on moving my vegetables around, on anything except looking at the man sitting across from me.

But I could feel his stare. Could feel those dark eyes boring into me, watching my every movement, willing me to look up.

I refused.

Luca and Dee carried most of the conversation, talking about Dee's painting and some business matter Luca was handling. I contributed when

Andrea's POVActually screamed, right there in that hospital room, both hands flying up over my mouth, tears pouring down my face all over again."A GIRL! Luca! A baby girl! Oh my God — oh my God—" I was laughing and sobbing at the same time and making no sense at all. "How's Dee? Is she okay? Can I talk to her? Put her on!""She's sleeping. They gave her something to help her rest — she's completely out." His face went soft again. "She was incredible, Andrea. You should have seen her. Sixteen hours and she never once — she was so brave. Braver than I've ever been about anything.""Of course she was." I wiped my face with my sleeve. "Okay. Okay, now you listen to me very carefully, Luca Romano. If you do not send me pictures of my baby within the next ten minutes, I will personally get on a plane to Italy and I will hurt you. I'm serious. Physically hurt you."Luca laughed — a real, full-bodied laugh, the kind I'd heard maybe three times in my whole life from that man. "Your baby

Andrea's POV"Dante, I'm hurting you—""I don't care." His voice was rough and slurred, thick with sleep and painkillers and something else underneath, but there was absolutely no arguing with it. "I don't care if it hurts. I want to hug you. Let me hug you. Please.""I don't want to hurt you," I said, and my eyes were streaming again."Five more minutes." He murmured it into my hair, and I felt him breathe me in. "Just — five more minutes. Please, Bambi."That name. That name after two months of nothing. So I stayed.I stayed carefully, holding most of my weight off him, my head tucked up under his chin and his good arm heavy and warm across my back. And I listened to his heartbeat under my ear — steady and strong and alive — and I let myself have it. Five minutes. Then ten. Then I lost track completely and stopped caring.Neither of us said anything. There was too much to say and no way to start, and for a little while the just-being-there was enough. It ended when the door

Andrea's POVThen I wiped my face hard with both hands, dragging the tears away with my palms, and I pulled in one long steadying breath and held it in my chest until it stopped shaking.I wasn't going to fall apart out here in a corridor. Not now. Not when he was right there on the other side of that glass, close enough that I could see the rise and fall of his chest. Not when, for the first time in two whole months, I could finally do the one thing I'd been aching to do every single day since that night in the library — be with him. Sit at his side. Not look away.I put my hand on the cold metal handle of the door. And I pushed it open, and I stepped inside, and I went to sit with the man I loved. The room was dim and quiet. Just the soft rhythmic beep of the heart monitor keeping time, and the low steady hum of the machines standing their patient watch over him. It was cooler in here than out in the corridor, the air conditioning breathing quietly somewhere above my head, and

Andrea's POV"Yes," I said. And the word came out steady and certain, because it didn't feel like a lie. It didn't feel like a lie at all. "Yes. I'm his family. Please — how is he? Is he going to be alright? Please tell me he's going to be alright."She gave me a small, steadying nod — the kind that let a little of the terror drain out of me before she'd even spoken. "He's stable. And I want you to hear that first, because it's the most important thing. He was very lucky, all things considered. When he came in we were concerned about internal bleeding, and that's always the real danger in a head-on impact like his — but the scans came back clear. No internal bleeding. That was the thing we were most afraid of, and he doesn't have it."The relief hit me so hard and so fast that my knees actually gave a little, and I had to brace my hand against the glass to keep myself upright. Air went into my lungs — real air, a full breath — for what felt like the first time since my mother had turn

Andrea's POVHe's going to be okay, I told myself, and the words came in his voice — his exact voice, from a car speeding toward a different hospital on a different terrible night, when it had been my turn to fall apart and his turn to hold the two of us together. He has to be okay. You're going to get on a plane, and you're going to go to him, and you're going to be right there in that room when he opens his eyes.I would not let myself finish the other thought. The one waiting just behind it. The one about how I would go on, how I could possibly go on, if he wasn't okay. If the very last time I ever saw him was drunk and broken and asleep in the wreck of that apartment. If I never got to watch those dark eyes open one more time. If I never got the chance to tell him, out loud, to his face, awake — the thing I'd only ever been brave enough to text him from a runway.I couldn't go there. I wouldn't. Because I knew that if I let myself fall into that particular dark I would never get b

Andrea's POV"I have to go back." I was already turning, already reaching blindly for my phone on the counter, my hands going numb and stupid. "I have to go back to New York. Right now. I have to be there, Mum, I have to —""Andrea, wait — there's more. Listen to me a second." She caught my arm, gently but firmly, holding me still. "Dahlia's gone into labor. About two hours ago now. That's the other reason Luca's been calling and calling."I stopped moving entirely. It was all happening at once. All of it. Dante in a hospital bed somewhere. Dahlia bringing her baby into the world. The whole axis of my life spinning out from under me in the span of a single stolen afternoon, while I'd lain there useless and dead to the world in my childhood bed, an entire ocean away from every person I loved.I got my phone turned on and it lit up with a whole stacked column of missed calls, every one of them Luca, one after another after another. My hands were trembling so violently I could barely mak

Dahlia’s POVThe hum of voices dipped lower the second Luca stepped into the room. It wasn’t silence, but it was close enough to feel strange, like someone had turned down the volume of the world just for him. Heads turned, conversations slowed, and I could feel the shift in the air. Some people whi

Dahlia’s POVI spent the afternoon in my painting room, alone with my thoughts. The sunlight coming through the big window made everything warm and soft, but my mind wasn’t focused on my brushes or the half-finished painting. It kept drifting back to last night—Luca’s hands on my skin, the way he w
