Andrea's POV

"Yes," I said. And the word came out steady and certain, because it didn't feel like a lie. It didn't feel like a lie at all. "Yes. I'm his family. Please — how is he? Is he going to be alright? Please tell me he's going to be alright."

She gave me a small, steadying nod — the kind that let a little of the terror drain out of me before she'd even spoken. "He's stable. And I want you to hear that first, because it's the most important thing. He was very lucky, all things considered.

Epilogue 4Andrea’s POV"You can, baby." His voice was rough and low and absolutely certain, his face right against mine, his hand gripping mine tight. "You can, Andrea. You already are. Look at you. You're the strongest person I've ever known in my life and you're so close now.""I'm not strong, I'm done, I'm so tired—""You are the strongest person I have ever met," he said fiercely. "I've stood in rooms full of the most dangerous men in the world and not one of them has anything on you. Not one. You hear me? Just a little more. I've got you. I'm right here.""Don't let go," I begged. "Don't you dare let go of me.""Never," he said. "Not for one second. I've got you. I'm not letting go."And he didn't. Through the very worst of it, he never once let go of my hand. And then, at last — after the longest, hardest night of my life, after I was sure I'd reached the absolute end of everything I had — there was one final, enormous, tearing, impossible push, and the entire world fell away i

Epilogue 3Andrea's POVIt started early in the morning, three weeks before my due date.I woke up around five with a dull, deep ache low in my back, and for a while I just lay there in the dark thinking it was nothing. Just the baby shifting his weight around. Just my poor overtaxed body being uncomfortable, the way it had been for weeks now. But then it came again. And again. A slow, hard tightening that started low across my belly and wrapped all the way around, coming in waves that got harder and harder to breathe through.I lay there and counted, my heart starting to pound. And then I reached over and nudged my husband awake.Dante came awake instantly, the way he always did. "What do you need?" he mumbled, already reaching for the lamp. "Craving? I'll go. Just tell me what and where—""Dante." I grabbed his hand and pressed it flat against my belly. "It's not a craving. I think the baby's coming."He went completely, utterly still for one whole second. And then he was up out of

Epilogue 2Dante's POVNobody warned me about the cravings.Six months in, and I have driven to more places, at more ungodly hours, for more baffling combinations of food, than I ever did running jobs for Luca. At least the jobs made sense. This — this is a whole new kind of work, and there's no strategy for it, no plan, no way to see it coming. There's just Andrea, my wife, six months pregnant and glowing and enormous and, at any given moment, capable of wanting something so specific and so strange that I've genuinely started keeping a mental list of every twenty-four-hour place within a fifty-mile radius. It started small. Pickles, which I understood — I'd heard about pickles. Ice cream, fine. But then it got creative."Dante," she said one afternoon, very seriously, both hands on the swell of her belly. "I need those little orange crackers. The fish ones. But I need to dip them in the strawberry jam. The good jam. The one from that place.""The place in Brooklyn.""The place in Bro

Andrea's POVHe laughed, wet and helpless, and then his gaze dropped down between us, to my stomach, and his whole face changed all over again, went soft and awed, and he sank slowly down to his knees right there on the living room floor amid the party wreckage and the deflating balloons. He pressed his forehead gently against me. And then, so carefully, like he didn't quite trust his own big scarred hands, he laid both of them flat over my belly — over the tiny impossible new life just barely beginning there."Hi," he said softly, his voice thick and rough. He was talking to the baby. He was actually talking to the baby. "Hi. It's me. I'm your dad."I put both my hands in his hair and the tears just poured down my face and I couldn't have said a single word if my life had depended on it."I already love you so much it's ridiculous," he told my stomach, very seriously. "I don't even know you yet. You're the size of a — I don't actually know what size you are, I'm going to read every b

  • SUBSTITUTE BRIDE FOR THE MAFIA DON   Chapter 193

Andrea's POVThe party wound down slowly, the way good parties always do.The guests trickled out one by one as the evening came on. Luca and Dahlia carried a sleepy, sugar-drunk Dove up to bed — the birthday girl had finally crashed hard after her third slice of cake, going from shrieking joy to dead asleep on Luca's shoulder in the span of about ninety seconds, one frosting-covered fist still clutching a balloon ribbon. My parents headed back to their hotel with tired, happy smiles and about six containers of leftovers my mum absolutely refused to leave behind. They were on their second honeymoon. Rian hugged me at the door, whispered "call me the second anything exciting happens," with a look that told me he suspected something, and swept off into the night. And Mrs. Cruz shooed every last person out of the kitchen, waved away all offers of help, and firmly informed us that the cleanup was hers and hers alone, and would we please go and rest before she had to get cross about it.An

Dahlia’s POVI smiled through my tears, my chest aching in that soft, painful way that comes from loving someone too much. Yes, I wanted him to remember. I wanted him to wake up one day and look at me the way he used to, with recognition and certainty. But even if he didn’t…Even if the memories ne

Dahlia’s POVI spent the afternoon in my painting room, alone with my thoughts. The sunlight coming through the big window made everything warm and soft, but my mind wasn’t focused on my brushes or the half-finished painting. It kept drifting back to last night—Luca’s hands on my skin, the way he w
