Chapter 3

Author: D. Pi
I thrashed desperately in the muddy waters while Eva and Jack looked on as if they were watching a spectacle.

The will to survive drove me to a frantic struggle. I paddled as hard as I could with my hands and feet. I clawed my way back to the eaves just right before the current could sweep me away.

When I popped my head out of the surface, gasping for air, I heard bawls of laughter coming from above.

"See. I told you Naomi could swim. She's just joking around."

Jack looked relaxed. "Alright, Naomi. I know you like joking about, but this isn't the time to do so. Eva and I will head up first."

Then, they continued climbing up.

As the rope ladder went further away from me, I yelled with all my might, "Wait up! There's still someone here!"

Eva turned to look at me, her eyes gleaming viciously.

She rocked the rope ladder as she moved up. Her foot struck a loose tile on the neighboring roof.

The tile, covered with mud, came hurling toward my face. I immediately jerked my head aside, but it still managed to graze my ear.

Blood streamed down my face.

In a flinch, I had let go, and the flood dragged me under again.

A throbbing pain spread from my ears as I choked on dirty, muddy waters. My lungs were burning.

Instinct to survive overruled anything else. My arms flailed wildly, finally grabbing onto the corner of the eaves poking above water.

My fingernails were cracked, flesh mashed and raw, but I could not care less.

I poked my head out of the water and gasped for breath once more. Blood streamed down my face, mixing into the muddy water.

Jack, on the rope ladder, saw my face. He stopped in his tracks and said, "Eva, I think something's wrong with Naomi."

"Jack, I-I'm feeling a little dizzy. My hands and legs are numb."

Eva's feeble voice immediately interrupted his thoughts. She slumped onto Jack, causing the rope ladder to sway.

Jack looked concerned. He instantly hugged her tightly, comforting her, "Eva, don't worry. Hold on tight to me. We'll be up soon."

Jack turned to look at me, a little worried.

Eva buried herself in Jack's arms and looked at me, smiling.

"Naomi, you've put on a good act, even using blood. You had me believe you for a split moment. Don't you think your joke has gone too far? You've scared Jack. You should be punished when we get back."

Jack's gaze at me instantly changed.

"We can just ignore her. She's doing just fine, and her acting is superb. She's still strong. If not, how could she so quickly hold on to the corner of the roof?

"Eva, I'll take you up. Naomi's doing alright. She won't die." He turned around and hugged Eva even tighter.

I was about to lose it as the waters were at my chin. They were soon rising above my nose.

I grabbed onto the eaves and begged them once more. "I'm begging you to take me with you. At least, take me to a shallower place. Get the helicopter to go slower. I'll just hold onto the ladder. Wouldn't that work?"

I tried to grab the rope when Eva screamed and buried herself in Jack's arms.

"Ah! Naomi, don't shake it! I'm really afraid!" Eva whimpered.

She added, "Naomi, don't be mistaken. I'm not hugging Jack on purpose. I'm just really afraid! The ladder is swaying so much!"

Jack held her tightly before turning to yell at me, "Naomi, are you nuts?! Are you trying to get Eva killed too? She's your best friend! Besides, if anything were to happen to her, Mr. Chapman will kill me!"

Jack and Eva's downfall was more brutal than I imagined.Jack became homeless, crushed by the huge amount of debt. His parents sold off their house, but it only scratched the surface. He could not land a job, so he had no choice but to go into the dirtiest of labors. Some had seen him working on the construction sites, completely covered in dirt, being yelled at by his superior. Some had also seen him late at night on the streets, rummaging through trash to find food. The once handsome and proud project manager had fallen to become the street rat that everybody despised.Even his friends all distanced themselves from him, treating him like the plague. One time, he was working as a dishwasher in a high-end restaurant when he bumped into his old colleagues having a gathering. He subconsciously tried to hide, but his colleagues recognized him."My, my. Isn't that our manager, the great Mr. Lewis? Why are you here washing dishes?""I heard you were with the heiress of Janson Group

Margaret tried to hold my hand, but I avoided it."Mrs. Sanders, Eva and I have not been friends for a long time."Margaret was stunned. Tears fell even harder."It's all our fault for not bringing up our daughter well! She's been jealous of you all this time, which was why she made such a mistake…"She has always liked playing with boys since she was young. We never thought that she would try to take Jack from you, and do such hurtful things to you…""Is that so?"I walked over to the screen in the living room and picked up the remote control."If that's what you say, let us watch something."I pressed the play button. The helicopter incident appeared right in front of us. It showed how Eva took two safety clips, hugging her suitcase, while happily watching me struggling in the water. It also showed how her foot so-called accidentally slipped when my hand was right on the rung of the rope ladder, stepping on my hand, so that I fell into the water once more.It also showed ho

"Yes, Naomi. You two have been together for three years. Couldn't you, for the sake of old feelings, show him mercy?""Old feelings?"I got up and walked over to them."When I was in the waters, when he took my safety clip for Eva's suitcase, why hadn't he thought about that?"When he kicked me into the waters and said that I wouldn't die, why hadn't he thought of that?"Also, you two. When I tore my ligament because I rescued Jack, I ended up in the hospital for a month. Did you two ever come to see me once?"You were so worried about your son, who merely choked a little on some water, yet you never once thanked me. Why didn't you talk about old feelings with me back then?"Everything I said made them blush in humiliation. "D-Didn't the doctor say you were fine? We thought you were just lightly injured…""Lightly injured?"I snickered and pulled up my pant leg, showing them the menacing scar on my knee. "The doctor said that this is forever. I could never run or jump like a n

The call hung up abruptly, leaving Jack standing there in a daze. His final hope was doused.Eva, next to him, after the initial shock, lost her temper. She pounced on Jack like a shrew, scratching him, yelling, "It's all your fault! Jack, you're a piece of trash! If it wasn't for you, how would I have crossed the heiress to the Janson family? Didn't you say that she's just an ordinary person? That her family didn't have money? You lied to me!"Jack came to his senses after a few gashes on his arm. He shoved her away. "You're one to talk! If you hadn't insisted on that safety clip, if you hadn't instigated me, would I have left Naomi? Eva, you evil hag! It's all your fault!"They tumbled in a brawl in the mud, attracting the gazes and laughter from everyone.I shut off the electronic tablet.Albert asked, "Ms. Janson, shall we teach them a lesson?"I shook my head. "There's no need for that, Albert. The game has just begun."When I returned to the city, the carefully planned th

The smile on Jack's face stiffened.Eva cowered a little in fright too."M-Mr. Janson, i-it was a misunderstanding!" Jack stuttered. "I-I d-didn't know that Naomi couldn't swim! Plus, Eva is my boss's…""So, my daughter deserved to be sacrificed because of your boss's relative and your future?" My father pressed on, making Jack speechless.Suddenly, my father snickered. He snapped his fingers and a bodyguard immediately brought Eva's huge suitcase in and threw it on the floor."You said that inside are all the gifts for your colleagues, right?"My father looked at Eva condescendingly and continued, "Open it up. Let me see what could be so precious that it's more important than my daughter's life."Eva's face lost all of its colors. Her lips trembled in fear as she was trying to find her words.Jack realized the severity of the situation. He went up to stop my father."No! Mr. Janson! It's just small trinkets…"It was too late.Another bodyguard had swiftly opened the suitcas

In the distant skyline, three jet-black helicopters sped toward us with an irresistible fury in a triangular formation.Their arrival caused a gush of wind so violent that even the old helicopter that Jack was on started wobbling. The helicopter in front of the formation stopped right above me. The wind that the blade caused formed a huge sunken vortex in the water.A rope quickly dropped from the helicopter as a rescuer in black tactical gear slipped down the rope in one swift motion. He looked at the baffled Eva and Jack in the distance before landing next to me."Ms. Janson, I'm sorry I'm late."Then, he unhooked the thermal blanket on his shoulders and wrapped it around me. With practiced efficiency, he clasped the safety clip on me, firmly securing me tightly in his arms. The entire process took less than fifteen seconds. The helicopter that Jack was on was driven back, forced awkwardly into an orbit by the sheer force of the black helicopter formation."Hey!
